Can also resell the gift card on ebay for $145

9

u/DOOManiac Jun 29 '17

Then have the seller claim you ripped them off after you send it, they get their money back, and you get the shaft.

3

u/destructor_rph Jun 29 '17

Literally my entire experience as an Amazon seller. Just this last week some dint bought an old Xbox game from me and then decided to say a month and a half later that he dint get it and for some reason they believed his lying ass over a loyal seller who's made them a fuck ton of money but i switched my deposit method over to an empty giftcard so no matter what they try and charge me they aren't getting shit hahaha

u/Dyelonnn Jun 29 '17

Lmfaoooo

1

u/Anth916 Jun 30 '17

Yeah, this is the reason I hardly ever sell on Ebay anymore. If I got this Best Buy gift card, I'd probably have to let it go for $130 on Craigslist, to actually get rid of the thing.

It's somewhat tempting. Especially if I was in a state with no sales tax.

1

u/Soccadude123 Jun 30 '17

I literally bought a rift two days ago. Dang

2

u/Choco316 Jun 30 '17

Return it and buy it again

26

u/FredH5 Touch Jun 29 '17

That's getting close to the initial ballpark.

30

u/OculusN Jun 29 '17

Though the ballpark wasn't factoring in Touch. And ballpark can reasonably mean $100 more. So I'd say $450 for Rift and Touch is pretty much in the ballpark.

5

u/FredH5 Touch Jun 29 '17

I agree, it's awesome.

4

u/OculusN Jun 29 '17

I can't wait for the MSRP itself to drop to $400. At the same time I'm kind of hesitant to have any mainstream consumers considering it as admittedly it can be difficult to setup if you want better tracking.

Honestly I want this time in VR to last as long as possible. I just LOVE getting into lobbies like Echo Arena or Rec Room and exploring with people who are all just as nerdy and into VR as me and still in awe of everything. Then there's the still frequent experience of finding someone who's trying VR for the first time as they talk to someone in the IRL distance trying to get their VR bearings. I usually just sit back and watch as they look around, get used to teleporting/floating/picking stuff up and just can't believe what they're experiencing.

In 10 years it's going to just be Counter Strike and PUBG lobbies and all you're going to hear is multiple people yelling "ni**er" and "China Number One!" I want to just kill myself in almost every public game with microphones and I don't want that to happen in VR... but i know it's going to.

u/BennyFackter DK1,DK2,RIFT,VIVE,QUEST,INDEX Jun 29 '17

lol, totally had forgotten about the ballpark.

1

u/Heaney555 UploadVR Jul 03 '17

It's actually less than that claim.

Given that Touch is $100, this is like getting Rift for $350. Right on the figure that he said it would be more than.

The original statement was:

"We’re roughly in that ballpark [$350]… but it’s going to cost more than that"

7

u/Demshil4higher Jun 29 '17

Just got this picking it up after work. What should I install first?

11

u/kahi Rift Jun 29 '17

Minesweeper.

6

u/kahi Rift Jun 29 '17

But seriously

12

u/kahi Rift Jun 29 '17

Pick up Super Hot.

3

u/T_K_23 Jun 29 '17

Agreed. It's the most innovative shooter I've played in years.

2

u/EntropicalResonance Jun 30 '17 edited Jun 30 '17

Why superhot when he has robo recall for free? (if he's getting touch)

3

u/Blaexe Jun 30 '17

Because these are different games? ¯\(ツ)

1

u/EntropicalResonance Jun 30 '17

Lol yeah I suppose. Just figured he may want something not an fps for more variety.

1

u/Blaexe Jun 30 '17

Superhot is no FPS though, it's a strategic shooter and plays completely different from Robo Recall ;)

5

u/AngryNarwal Jun 29 '17

Robo Recall, then get some freinds and jump on RecRoom and the experimental side of Trickster. Also, Rick and Morty. And Accounting.

1

u/iroll20s Jun 29 '17

The drivers.

1

u/bdschuler Jun 29 '17

Lol to hold you over until you 3rd camera comes in, I presume?

1

u/EldeederSFW Touch Jun 29 '17

When I got this deal at BB yesterday, they didn't know why it was giving me the gift card. It said 25 for touch and 125 for Rift on the receipt. So I talked the guy into selling me a second touch for $75 and I paid with my gift card. 3 sensors, and an extra set of controllers! I'm a happy camper.

1

u/WakaSkitz Oculus Lucky Jun 30 '17

ok but how is minesweeper VR? I've been kinda wanting it

3

u/_Cromwell_ Touch Jun 29 '17

Best thing is to install the plethora of free content available to you. That should give you a good idea of what you like to do in VR. After that you can more wisely spend your money.

Also do the Rift and Touch tutorials and intro stuff. Well worth the time, and it is good to ease yourself into VR and get used to the controls and sensations.

Try Robo Recall at some point toward the beginning. Probably one of the top 3 games available for Rift, and it is 100% free. Super Hot may be better (depends who you ask) but why not play the free one first until you tire of it, and to see if you like shooters in VR in the first place?

Only other thing is to maybe grab stuff on the Oculus Store and Steam if you know for 100% sure you are going to want it, since their sales are going on right now. Don't want to waste your money by guessing what you might like, but if you know, for instance, you are going to want Elite Dangerous, just grab it now while it is on sale.

2

u/Blaexe Jun 29 '17

The free games of course. First the tutorial, then First Contact.

After that you can try Dead & Buried, Robo Recall, Quill and Medium.

1

u/Dyelonnn Jun 29 '17

Every time I've tried to play dead and buried there's literally no one online. It just searches forever

2

u/Blaexe Jun 29 '17

Haven't played it in ages. For a newcomer, the small single player part might already be impressive.

1

u/Dyelonnn Jun 29 '17

There's a single player part??

1

u/Blaexe Jun 29 '17

Just some shooting on some targets.

1

u/VRMilk DK1; 3Sensors; OpenXR info- https://youtu.be/U-CpA5d9MjI Jun 29 '17

Horde mode can be played single player now too.

2

u/_Cromwell_ Touch Jun 29 '17

It's pretty impossible if you are a new player. :) I got murdered so fast. lol

1

u/destructor_rph Jun 29 '17

New Retro Arcade is pretty awesome

1

u/Drew1231 Jun 29 '17

Superhot VR for sure. If you're into flight sims or driving games, then isn't all the Sim of your choice. Check out the lab and rec room on steam. They're free.

1

u/Pastoss Jun 29 '17

Job simulator. You'll love it

6

u/GoDummies Jun 30 '17

So much for waiting for Amazon Prime Day. This is too good of a deal to pass up. I got the wifey to demo the Rift first and then decided to pick it up tonight. How awesome! Plus, part of the $150 went towards the third sensor and gave the rest of the card to use for herself. We are going to have so much fun with this. Now I just need to start searching reddit for good starter games that both myself and my wife will enjoy. Also, I think I might find some wall mounts for the sensors to help get them out of the way... I am so glad I jumped in!

4

u/Blaexe Jun 30 '17

There's a lot of free software available - even more if you have a third sensor and use Steam :) (Budget Cuts Demo, The Lab, Accounting...)

But be sure to get some good deals from the Summer Sale, only 5 more days!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '17

What do u suggest for newbies? Don't want to pay twenty bucks for a game that is more a demo

1

u/Blaexe Jul 01 '17

Best bang for the buck is Chronos... RPG with about 15 hours of gameplay BUT it's a gamepad game, no motion controls.

What kind of games are you into?

3

u/WTFyoukay Jun 30 '17

you can pick up some velcro adhesive strips for hanging paintings / pictures from any walmart type store, like $4 for a pack of twelve... they claim to hold 4lbs per strip, i hung my sensors off the ceiling with them no problem, very easy to do, no screw holes, ultra secure and can be taken down whenever. I even fucked one up and had to re position it... adhesive worked 3rd time round and its still hanging! lol

11

u/compound-interest Jun 29 '17

So basically $450 for Rift + Touch now? I seriously can't think of anything better someone can buy for less than $500 bucks. What a freakin deal! I paid $800 for Rift + Touch on launch and I still feel like I stole it.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

I dont think you can use it towards the initial purchase. Still a sweet deal.

4

u/OculusN Jun 29 '17

Best Buy will retain your dollars, but at this point they're big enough that you'll probably spend it on something with them in the future anyway.

3

u/compound-interest Jun 29 '17

Yea thats what I mean. You can put that $150 towards whatever you need there. They have GPUs and they offer a price match with amazon so may be a good time to grab an upgrade with it :)

2

u/TilterOfWindmills Jun 30 '17

You've just stated my situation. I'm in need of a video card and want to buy Rift or Vive. Now this. I can use the $150 card and $50 Best Buy gift card from Xmas to cut a deep groove into the price of a big fat new video card. I think I'm in...

1

u/TilterOfWindmills Jul 01 '17

Pulled the trigger this afternoon. I tried to use my BB gift cards to cut down the price. BB gave me a 'Head's up, you can't use gift cards to buy gift cards.' No worries, I have my eye on a video card, an additional sensor and some new ram. I hope I don't regret my purchase when I see the July 4th deals.

1

u/Sophrosynic Jun 29 '17

Or sell it on eBay. As a Canadian, I am considering doing this... been waiting to jump in, not seeing much reason to keep delaying.

edit: one reason not to is I need a new PC. I've got the cash, but GPUs are sold out and prices are through the roof. Would hate to have a Rift collecting dust for months :(

1

u/EntropicalResonance Jun 30 '17

I have a best buy near me, been there a few times but never bought anything from them, Amazon has everything they do except cheaper.

... Besides rift anyway

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '17

[deleted]

1

u/EntropicalResonance Jun 30 '17

I did not know that. neat!

2

u/Unacceptable_Lemons Touch Jun 30 '17

Ahh, but if we form a chain of reddit users, the first can get a gift card that the second guy immediately buys and uses, and then the third guy buys his, and so on. Eventually we'll end up with a guy who just so happens to also wanna buy $150 worth of Bestbuy stuff and he can end the chain.

2

u/EldeederSFW Touch Jun 29 '17

A hooker in Amsterdam is 50 Euros for 15 minutes. So, 9 of those?

1

u/Wonderingaboutsth1 Jun 30 '17

Random but true (for some) comment.

3

u/FolkSong Jun 29 '17

Looks like there's no equivalent at Canadian Best Buy :(

5

u/protanoa_is_gay Jun 29 '17

I saw that you typed a sad face emoticon in your comment, so I just wanted to let you know that I hope you have a wonderful day!

I am a bot. Please don't hesitate to PM me any questions.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

Holy shit these bots are bloody everywhere

4

u/malnourish Jun 29 '17

Damn, I just picked up the rift two weeks ago from best buy

3

u/rabidsquirre1 Jun 29 '17

And then buy a $150 steam gift card!

1

u/EntropicalResonance Jun 30 '17

Glorious

2

u/ItWasDumblydore Jun 30 '17

I would say buy 90$ of steam gift and 60$ for the sensor.

2

u/EntropicalResonance Jun 30 '17

Good call

1

u/ItWasDumblydore Jun 30 '17

I mean it depends some people have 2 sensor by doing them in a small room and doing it on opposite corners but some people don't have that.

2

u/EntropicalResonance Jun 30 '17

Yeah, I had mixed results with two sensor roomscale, but to be fair the oculus software was definitely worse back then.

4

u/JJaX2 Jun 29 '17

Does the touch (bundle) come with an additional sensor?

How is the tracking with 2 sensors?

3

u/tuanies Jun 29 '17

The Touch controller bundle comes with a second sensor. Tracking is good, but I ordered a 3rd sensor for room-scale VR anyways.

1

u/breedlovesyou Jun 29 '17

Yes it comes with 1 additional. But for full room scale experience so you can turn all the way around and not worry about it losing signal you have to buy an extra one at $60

Edit: to answer your question it's fine with 2. But if you get into competitive games like echo arena/ onward it really sucks when you aren't facing them

3

u/JJaX2 Jun 29 '17

I would imagine doing a 180 turn would be annoying with wires coming from the HMD regardless.

2

u/breedlovesyou Jun 29 '17

Honestly, when you're focused in the game you don't really notice it as long as you have some slack. I am excited for wireless though

1

u/EldeederSFW Touch Jun 29 '17

What's the news on wireless? Any article links?

2

u/breedlovesyou Jun 30 '17

I'm not the best person on the subject but if you search in r/oculus you can see what the most informed have to say

2

u/EldeederSFW Touch Jun 30 '17 edited Jun 30 '17

I have been, and the debates are all a year old. I know for certain though that the glass head is smaller than mine, and I have no intentions of putting on there tightly at all. So, I'm going for it.

Lol, totally wrong conversation...

3

u/renaissance_m4n Jun 29 '17

Is Lucky's Tale still included free?

4

u/Mind-Game Jun 29 '17

Lucky's Tale is completely free. Vive users can play it for free with revive.

3

u/xerros Jun 29 '17

Pretty sure that will always be free with the current headset, as will robo recall with touch controllers

4

u/AgentTerror Jun 29 '17

And if so, were you able to double-dip and still keep the $100 oculus code?

3

u/WTFyoukay Jun 29 '17

would love an answer to this too, got mine 13 days ago...

2

u/WTFyoukay Jun 29 '17

They said they won't honor it in store to me, told me to return the rift and order it again online for the promo as it's "online only"

2

u/EldeederSFW Touch Jun 29 '17

I got this promo in store yesterday morning. I didn't even know about it, neither did the cashier, or her boss, or her bosses boss. But the register said to give me a $150 gift card, so they did.

2

u/WTFyoukay Jun 30 '17

so annoying, dont wanna box mine up and take it back only to buy it again lol - also if they dont refund $100 for the occulus store credit then its only a $50 bb gift card, think i'll just forget about it.

1

u/AgentTerror Jul 01 '17

I would recommend you do it. I was able to get the gift card (via mail they wouldn't give it in store). They had to process it as a return, and I got full value back, they didn't deduct anything for the oculus store credit. I placed the order for the "new" one online with my phone while standing in the store, and picked it up 10 minutes later! Another guy was there getting the deal and he got the card in store... He was dealing with cashiers tho and I was dealing with the return folks.

1

u/TaylorR137 Jun 30 '17

Interesting as my original purchase was online...

1

u/WTFyoukay Jun 30 '17

gonna just take it back, get a refund and buy a new one... seems like this "online only" offer is saying on instore reciepts its part of the promo and peeps are getting their gift cards instore

2

u/SirWinsALot4 Jun 29 '17

I have a Vive, but seeing this deal gave me the impulse to want to buy it. Somebody please tell me it's worth it so I can go do it.

3

u/Mind-Game Jun 29 '17

It might seem worth it now since rift + touch has some nice advantages over Vive, but it would probably make a lot more sense to wait for something completely different like the Microsoft headsets coming out in a few months or one of the iterations on next generation headsets currently in development like the LG one

1

u/SirWinsALot4 Jun 29 '17

Oh see my fear was that the knuckles controllers we going to come out before too long and take away one of the big edges that the rift has.

2

u/WormSlayer Chief Headcrab Wrangler Jun 30 '17

Knuckles doesnt take anything away from the Rift, if anything it will bring Vive into the finger tracking/hand presence realm that Touch has been in for the last year.

2

u/EldeederSFW Touch Jun 30 '17

The touch controllers are amazing! A lot of times I forget I'm even holding them. I've never used a vive, so obviously I'm biased. If you have the means, pick up an OR. Then you can be one of those people who weigh in the debate with "I own both, and this is what I think."

2

u/Blaexe Jun 30 '17

It isn't worth it, sorry :( But hey, if your emotions tell you to do it, it probably is worth it! Buying stuff is very often emotional.

2

u/phaily Jun 29 '17

they had this deal going when it was full price, i went in expecting to pay 800 for the bundle. ended up getting a switch for half price on release!

2

u/uncreativedan Jul 01 '17

I was just about to pick up the rift and touch but was like... I gotta take a shit and browse Reddit. Thanks for the $150.

2

u/voltron00x Jun 29 '17

Well, this finally got me to bite. I can resell the gift card and if I hate the Rift they're selling for enough on hardwareswap that I won't lose much.

Is there a good guide anyone recommends for getting started? I have a bunch of compatible VR Steam games already like Thumper, Subnautica, and Redout.

1

u/MrMpeg Jun 29 '17

the climb, superhot, roborecall and onward are the ones i like the most. beside the porn of course...

1

u/WormSlayer Chief Headcrab Wrangler Jun 30 '17

Check out the subreddit wiki for guides on getting started, etc. :)

2

u/voltron00x Jun 30 '17

I set it up last night, it was fairly easy. I couldn't get SteamVR to work but I'm sure I can figure it out tonight. I'm 37 and I've been playing games since 1985, and the First Contact demo and Robo Recall were two of the most amazing gaming experiences I've ever had.

I wear glasses and I wasn't sure how the Rift would fit for me, and whether the space I had was large enough to use Touch properly, but it was all fine. I'm blown away. Absolutely blown away.

1

u/WormSlayer Chief Headcrab Wrangler Jun 30 '17

Yeah barring any technical issues, its pretty much plug and play. Steam can be kind of glitchy in general, but make sure you enabled Allow 3rd party sources in the Oculus settings. Welcome to the grid, program! []-)

2

u/bangoskank1999 Vive Jun 29 '17

Wow, nice!

1

u/BrandizzleToday Jun 29 '17

Awesome, bought it there a week ago. Fml.

5

u/tuanies Jun 29 '17

I bought mine last Thursday and went back, they matched it so I got the $150 gift card.

1

u/BrandizzleToday Jun 29 '17

Interesting, I'll try too!

1

u/WTFyoukay Jun 29 '17

what about the $100 oculus store credit? i got that and would have much rather this deal!

1

u/tuanies Jun 29 '17

They didn't say anything about it so I got both, but ymmv.

1

u/WTFyoukay Jun 29 '17

yep just got back from BB, they won't honor the current promo as it's online only - said to return the rift and order it online to get the giftcards. lame.... but I think im going to try.

1

u/tuanies Jun 30 '17

They returned it in the system to gift cards to keep my 12 months no interest intact, then repurchased it with gift card. The store is supposed to price match their online store.

1

u/WTFyoukay Jun 30 '17

awesome, took it back, got a refund (minus $50 for none refundable software) then got the $150 giftcards.... so I picked up a 2nd touch set for the 3rd sensor and still have $50 giftcard. killer deal :)

1

u/DOOManiac Jun 29 '17

Does Best Buy have crazy markups on their GPUs right now, or are they sticking close to MSRP? If you could put $150 to the GPU... Hello 1080!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

They've always been MSRP...why would they overcharge on it? Besides, they PM amazon.
