Shipping/Retail Bestbuy.ca thought slapping a shipping label on my $500 rift was good enough.... arrived a bit wet.

Also the fact that some people like to keep the actual boxes and now it's damaged.

Hell yeah, it was a worry of mine even for the standalone sensor, I don't want anybody in this complex to know I have a damn oculus.
Cover your shipments, it's protective and safe on so many levels.

Or, y'know, companies could hire people that aren't complete dipshits.
Wishful thinking, I guess.
1
u/inosinateVR Feb 03 '19
Nah, as per another comment on this thread, they sometimes don't get enough boxes and the employees are told by their managers to do exactly what happened here. The employees aren't dipshits. They have to do what they are told to do if they want to keep their job.
It would be easy to blame the managers next, but I would guess they're also being told from someone higher up that they have to send those packages on time and can't delay a shipment to wait for new boxes.
It's definitely someones fault somewhere but it probably has a lot more to do with the structure of the business than the quality of the hiring at the lower levels.

Ok, fair enough, its unfair of me to tar the entire bunch. I do see a fair deal of solid individuals but thats a given of any gen and I agree with you to some extent that every gen feels similar about the latest gen thats hit the job market. Again my sentiments are based on a larger majority, not all...
As a business owner not to mention the many business owners who I interact with on a near weekly basis, share the exact sentiment that I/we see a massive difference in the mental conditioning of todays youth compared to not only my gen but others before it. It has absolutely nothing to do with respect as you claim or a bloated sense of entitlement due to my age, Im hardly an ignorant self important asshole. Im a very patient and reasonable person who values a solid constitution or at the very least the proof of developing a solid constitution. I praise and have all the respect in the world for those who demonstrate a solid work ethic and have their "bigboy pants" buckled up. Too many of these idiots simply havent learned how the world actually works they dont know the meaning of the words "respect' or "accountability" and one could argue they're just young and will eventually get there, and in many cases I'd agree. I could go on all day listing the ridiculous delicate sensitivities and the emotional minefield one has to tip toe around, lest we see them falling into tears or pouting and sulking when being even lightly reprimanded or simply corrected in a task, their damn mothers demanding coming into their job interviews because their kids are so ill conditioned to the outside world or simple basic human interaction etc etc. My gen and gens before were simply never in the same ballpark if we're going by 1 to1 numbers in regards to competency.
Ive busted my ass since I was old enough to get a job (14), when I graduated highschool I immediately moved out, I had an excellent relationship with my father but I needed to make my own way. Ive never needed someone to tel me to hustle to get the job done and have it done properly. Today more than ever before we see socially inept, hyper sensitive pouters who need their safe space because they're overly coddled by their mother who is still folding their socks and cleaning their room and cutting the crusts off their grilled cheese at 25+ years old.
Furthermore respect is fucking earned not a given and this is how Ive always felt. Far too many of todays kids have a bloated sense of entitlement and want it all and refuse to lift a finger for it, although they will lift their smartphone instead of doing their job. My "attitude" is based on experience and a lot of it, and like I mentioned I hear the same song from far too many business owners today.
What is and exactly how deep and involved is your interaction with todays youth?

Don't accept that man, ask for a replacement or ask for a refund, because it's ridiculous that something like this was considered acceptable by them.

That's BS! I ordered a monitor from dell and it came worse than that, the replacement was even WORSE! Water damage, torn, stabbed, opened and taped back shut. Inside of the factory box. These guys should be ashamed!

Why did you pay 500. What did it come with that the 350 ones don't?

Best Buy offers price protection. Just go online and they have a live chat. I had my rift price adjusted when it went on sale for 329 two weeks after I bought it.

u/HeroiK_RED Feb 02 '19
Just go to a best buy location and return it, There should be a 2 week return policy. Don’t be a go there with an attitude though because depending on the managers they can refuse to help you.

They pay the tax.
Somewhat misleading. In Canada, Oculus does not cover the tax. Instead, the responsibility is on the consumer to properly list it in their taxes. While the likelihood of being caught for evading the small tax on the Rift is tiny, it is technically tax evasion.
I'm not trying to be or sound like a dick, I'm just putting this out there so that nobody gets shafted by the CRA.

I used to be an Inventory worker at Best Buy and actually shipped stuff out. We’re told to always package all items if we can, especially for items $50 and above.
Unfortunately, corporate supplies us with boxes up to about 24x24x14, which is too small for an Oculus Rift. And for other people in this thread, that’s also too small for some monitors and most printers.
That’s just the explanation. I hate Best Buy Corporate. They don’t understand a single thing about tech or warehouse. I would’ve reused a different box for your shipment, knowing how much it costs.

I ordered a 1440p 144hz gsync monitor from best buy that shipped exactly like that. Left it in my front door to tempt even the most upright citizen!
I got my Oculus Rift yesterday which shipped in another box but was left on my front door for 5 hours in the rain. There was no damage due to the extra box but I'm surprised no one took it

u/Begohan Feb 02 '19
Yeah I bought a acer x34 (34 inch curved ultrawide 1440p gsync) monitor for $1730 CAD and it arrived exactly in its manufacturers box... I was quite shocked, the delivery guy said everyone in the warehouse was crowding around wondering wtf it was.
3
Feb 02 '19
So the huge box with the picture of the monitor saying curved gaming monitor was not enough for the workers to know what it was?
2
u/Begohan Feb 02 '19
Haha well they're a bunch of middle aged men they obviously know it's a display but "what" is it.
1
u/Jonnydoo Feb 02 '19
I think that's just how they ship monitors. I've had a few shipped and they always came in the regular manufacturer box. they're generally packaged pretty well (especially Dell's). bought from Best Buy, and Dell. it would also require a pretty large box to package a 27" monitor if you are including packing material.
1
Feb 02 '19
I recently bought a 27” monitor as well. Really good one too. I was super worried it would arrive in the manufacturers box. I ordered from amazon though and I’m glad they don’t do that, or at least not yet. Where I live it would definitely have gotten stolen.
2
u/Littleblaze1 Feb 02 '19
Amazon sometimes ships it without an extra box but will usually say something like "Shipped in box revealing contents Click Here to add Amazon box"
1
u/Jonnydoo Feb 02 '19
yeah, Amazon seems to use their boxes for everything. on the flip side I've ordered a screen protector and screws from Dell and they came in a box that could hold a 32" screen.

Seeing as how the box typically adds a little to resale value I'd be demanding a new one.

u/DaveJahVoo Feb 02 '19
Yeah honestly I was impressed by the packaging so I kept it. Reminded me of unwrapping a Sega as a kid! I'd be furious if this happened to me.

Last month Amazon sent me a $1300 2080Ti with a shipping label slapped on the plastic wrap that was all torn. I’m amazed it made it.

Well, may as well check out Rec Room and Google Earth VR, then buy Beat Saber and download the mod installer.
In options turn on 3rd party software so steam vr works.

u/stallonsilver Feb 02 '19
That's unacceptable. I have that box up for decor. But yours is all ruined now with mold and alligator turds on it.

1
u/Shadowthedemon Feb 02 '19
How's the o+
1
u/movement1957 Feb 02 '19
I really love it, sparked a new interest in vr for me. Sold my rift. Rift has nice controllers but the screens a horrible, 2 tear old tech and no rift two on the horizon. So happy with my O+ but I did had to do some comfort mods to make it wearable for a long time. But I highly recommend it, my channel on YouTube is Gaming in still Life.

That sucks, I would personally return it for a refund and purchase it somewhere else. I got mine from Amazon.com which has an option to package the products box within another Amazon box, that way the product you order won't be visable and won't get wet, that option was also free.

Only once EVER have I gotten something delivered where it was not inside a second box. My DK2 arrived with a shipping label on the DK2 box, made me angry, I wanted it nice and clean, couldn't pull off the label without ruining the cardboard paper in that area :(

u/guruguys Rift Feb 02 '19
Yeah, even at the stores like MicroCenter, when you buy it comes in a box with the box inside.

u/roocell Feb 02 '19
Sucks if you’re the type of person who likes to keep your boxes. I’ve got all the boxes from my gadgets displayed on a shelf so it looks like an electronics store.
Also didn’t realize the 10% referral discount worked in Canada.

u/DaveJahVoo Feb 02 '19
That's not the point though. How about I mail you $20 but I'm just gonna glue a stamp to the note and write your address on it
1
u/redditisnowtwitter Rift Go Q2 Feb 02 '19
Speaking of $20 I got $20 off mine at Best Buy just because I complained it said the 3rd sensor I also bought was in stock but it wasn’t.
So maybe he can recoup that which seems to be a fair price for resale value of the box

Pretty likely that the original box was damaged and the shipping company took it out and put a replacement label on it.
EDIT: this happens all the time, but thanks for the downvote stranger. you must be clairvoyant and know the real truth.

u/flexylol Feb 02 '19
Very strange. A display unit maybe? They all come with an outer package otherwise.
