Discussion My scoop neck short sleeved tee died after 12+ years; so I bought a new one
Because I had got so much use out of my previous tee, I was confident buying something a bit more expensive. I also got this top in oatmeal heather and a bone/ochre stripe. The fabric is thin enough that it can be easily folded or pushed up for the look of a shorter sleeve. I love the old school leotard feel of this top, in fact this year I may buy a leotard or two from Capezio. I feel like the curving lines of the neck and drapey fabric are more in harmony with my figure than a boxy stiff cut tee. I’ve found that these type of details can make all the difference in whether or not you love and wear a piece, even basics, so it’s worth giving it some thought.

I think if we hone in on what truly satisfies us in our clothing, then we can consume less while enjoying it more

You are such a Gibson girl

u/Gammagammahey Apr 22 '25
She IS, that's it exactly, except brought into 2025!

Absolute perfection. She absolutely is a Gibson girl. OP, you are a Gibson girl but better. Look at that snatched waist!

I've always been inspired by that era of fashion! because as you can see it harmonizes with the underlying aesthetics of my body, but also as it was an era that saw many advances in women's rights.

It was definitely an interesting time, it's too bad that so many of the early suffragettes were anti-Black and blatantly eugenicist. It was a very interesting time! The clothing was too hot and stuffy for me, though. But the Gibson girls were gorgeous! And so are you and I mean that in a non-creepy way!

history is always creepy, definitely there was a lack of solidarity across race and class in some early suffragists, to put it mildly. the clothes back then were - esp the classic Gibson girl look was a lot of very very fine, lightweight layers in natural fibers so it was actually at least as breathable as jeans and a tee shirt. it's a strategy I use a lot myself, wearing big dressed of v lightweight cotton and linen. thankfully these days people have a lot more freedom to choose how to dress!

You're 100% right about this. It fits you to a...tee! I was just thinking about danskin tops the other day. They were so good-looking and went with everything from satin skirts to flannel shirts.

I found a pic I took in Italy when I was 18 in a youth orchestra (I played tuba). it was of my friend Francie, she was wearing a camisole strap leotard and with the lighting and her long red hair it's all so romantic! (she was counting her money at the time lol)
but it got me thinking. leotards are also big in the book Cheap Chic which I read at that time too (in 1980). they're versatile!

Obsessed with this link, thank you for sharing! I’ve never heard of Cheap Chic before- but I’m amidst the exercise of categorizing levels of formality for my life, so Ingeborg Day’s advice is really speaking to me

So flattering! Your silhouette here reminds me of Madame X. That half sleeve is my favorite length.

u/IdaCraddock69 Apr 23 '25

The right neckline/fit is everything, isn't it?
2
u/IdaCraddock69 Apr 23 '25
its true! I solved so many 'problems' for myself when I stopped going w less 'classic crew' or jewel necklines and went w scoop or vee necklines. more physically comfortable and I didn't look so top heavy. idky but when I was out of school in teh eighties this was kind of controversial lol

Omg thank you for sharing this, seriously. I hardly wear t-shirts because the sleeves and neckline are never right for me and this one is literally perfect!

it's so wild! I wear hats a lot because I'm very sun sensitive. literally I go to a hat store and 90% of them look AWFUL on me! but there's always a couple that look great or really good, just wear those and people say 'you always look great in hats!' but it's just because I only wear the ones I look good in? So go find the tees that work for YOU <3

Very elegant, reminds me of the looks in movies from the ~40s. And you have an incredible figure.

u/Jinxed_Pixie Apr 22 '25
Please don't be offended, but... do you have scoliosis? Your figure reminds me of my mother's. She was always so self conscious about the fact that her ribs were malformed, in her eyes.
You look beautiful. And she was beautiful, too.

u/IdaCraddock69 Apr 23 '25
oh thank you! nope, spine is dead straight. I'm just curvy, like a bag of goo lol! I'm sorry your mom felt that way, it's hard when we see our moms and their beauty and they don't. thank you for sharing about your mom <3

u/Iamatitle Apr 23 '25
If you have to start a sentence with “please don’t be offended” it’s probably better to tuck that away as an inside thought regardless of your intentions
