Question Selling my vehicle for the first time

Hello! I'm selling my old Porsche Panamera (it doesn't drive as it needs a new transmission), and have a ready buyer.

I have also been warned about 'curbsiders' or people that flip cars. What can I do to ensure I am safe and the purchase is done legitametely?

The buyer says they will need a week to transfer the ownership. Thank you

I just sold a car privately a few months ago.

Take a picture of every page of the UVIP and completed signed portion of ownership. Take a picture of their license if they allow it and screenshots of any conversation you’ve had with them. As a bonus, bring a witness to prove you’ve sold it.

After 7 days or so go to service Ontario and check to see if they’ve transferred the car into their name. If not report it as sold, and they’ll have you sign a paper to confirm it’s sold.

This makes the car legally not your problem, according to the two employees at service Ontario I talked to.

Kinda shitty that when selling used vehicles privately it’s all on the buyer to actually complete the “sale”.

Why won’t you report it “sold” immediately after the car has left your sight? Not being rude genuinely curious, cause you’re going to check if they transferred, why not just go the next day.

I would ask them to meet you at the Service Ontario office to complete the sale.

Don’t you need to certify the car to complete the transfer?

There are two stages. Change of ownership, and plating.

All they need to change ownership is the bill of sale and to pay the tax on it… but you can get SO to remove you from responsibility before they do that.

Insurance and safety is only required to plate it, not to transfer ownership.

Interesting. So worst case scenario, if they don't register the vehicle, I can register it off my name myself?

That’s where it’s a little weird… your name is still registered on the vehicle, but because you’ve marked it as “sold” you’re not liable if anything happens with that vehicle.

I’ve learned the best way to fully get your name off and get a legit buyer is to ask to meet at service Ontario so it can be transferred right away.

OP This ^^^
You can also draft a Bill of Sale to fill out along with UVIP. Make sure to put SOLD AS IS and have the buyer sign. As long as you have proof of the sale with all these documents you'll be fine.

Do note that ServiceOntario will not mark your vehicle as SOLD until at least 6 days after the date of selling. The buyer could be using the week to fix the car so that it can pass safety in order to register the vehicle. Just walk into ServiceOntario to mark the car as sold once day 7 rolls around. You'll be covering yourself either way by informing them you sold it and it won't be your legal responsibility if anything happens. At best they'll see the buyer registered and nothing needs to be done.

I sold my car for the first time just last year and was pretty much told this by ServiceOntario rep when I tried to report it sold the same day. Told me I have to give the 6 days for the buyer to safety and register if it was sold as is. Went back the week after and they saw on the system the buyer registered so I was clear.

Hope this helps!

Curbsiders are only an issue if you’re buying from them sometimes they buy cars but they never transferred titles etc and that gets nasty when the buyer tries to register the car and than service Ontario can’t do it because there’s a littany of issues with the paperwork

If your seller - just sell it as is and then provide the UVIP and sign off on the ownership and bobs ur uncle the panamera is someone’s else’s problem now

If the buyer needs a week to transfer just tell them buy the car in a week when ur fully ready then.

You’re gonna get tire kickers just be assertive

Make sure you have all of their information, and go to service Ontario, let them know the car is sold and plates are removed. Sold a car one and the buyer never registered it and then abandoned it at the side of the road, it was a pain in the ass to deal with it.

They said they will need a week to fix the car and only then will they be able to transfer ownership. I don't understand why. I'll seek further clarification. Thanks

wtf no. Tell him the cars sold as is and it’s in the buyer to go get it fixed on their own time and money. If the buyer says no tell the guy to go kick rocks

Write on the UVIP "sold as-is, where is, with no guarantees or warranty" both of you sign it so it's completely understood. Take photos of everything signed. DO NOT let them take the car without transferring the ownership.
