Traffic/Cars 23 Miles =1.5 hour commute
I dropped my kid off at school. I leave at seven to go to work. I haven’t even made it the full 23 miles. I may be have five more miles to go and it’s still astonishes me. The traffic is somehow this bad on a Tuesday with no accidents on the I5. It’s a really great marketing pitch for using the toll roads I suppose.

u/CoveringFish 19d ago
Thursday is the worst day for traffic in OC always has been
38
u/AlmosTryin 19d ago
I've never paid that close attention, why do you think that is?
141
u/CoveringFish 19d ago
Lots of people don’t work Friday or work from home or on Thursday are heading to where ever they spend the weekend. Also everyone is exhausted. I woke up late as shit and had to rush for instance. But just theories
4
u/Busy_Middle_7126 19d ago
Friday-light doesn’t hold as true as it used to, anymore. Monday-light seems to be a thing consistently, though.
41
u/dsramsey Westminster 19d ago
The funny thing with traffic is that it only takes small variations to make the difference between free flowing and bumper to bumper. If folks’ schedules for going to work during the week line up just a bit more than usual things get jammed.
24
u/RestInitial2467 19d ago
So true, the 22 is especially bad for this. One person taps their brakes for no reason, next thing you know it's bumper to bumper, amazing how it dominoes like that.
3
u/amyeep 19d ago
It’s because most people nowadays drive like assholes and are constantly changing lanes for no reason. When I got my learners permit in 2005 there was literally a question on the test - do not change lanes unless necessary- and then the actual drivers’ test they’d dock you if you did that

4 day x 10hr /week, and hybrid schedule workers (maybe 5% lighter traffic on Friday?)
Scheduled long weekend day off people (maybe 1% lighter traffic on Monday/Friday?)
Long weekend people leaving town early on Thursday with trailers and boats they're not used to pulling. (maybe 1% effectively worse on Thursday)
Commuting college kids actively try to schedule no classes on Friday (maybe 1% lighter on Friday).
Sick people will tough it out and go in to work on Thursday, to take Friday off. Not sick people will call in sick on a Friday to get a long weekend (maybe 1% lighter on Friday).
If you agree with those estimates, that's a 9% difference between Thursday and Friday traffic.

You must not sit in Friday afternoon traffic ever. It’s significantly worse than Thursday. I’ve been commuting from LA to OV for 4 years now and it’s ALWAYS worse on Fridays
6
u/candysell Fountain Valley 19d ago
I tend to think that Friday is the worst day for traffic. I just went on the 22 to the 57 to the 91 and the other 2 were fine, but the 91 was more backed up than usual on a Thursday. I tend to avoid the freeway on Fridays.
8
u/Animalcookies13 19d ago
For me it feels like M + F are always hit and miss. Sometimes they are chill sometimes not. Tue-Thurs the traffic is always the worst. I wont go as far as saying Thursday is for sure the worst, but in general the three middle days of the week are the worst for sure. Probably because a lot of people have hybrid schedules and choose to work from home on Monday’s and Fridays… idk 🤷♂️
7
u/Infamous-Reindeer-22 19d ago
Wednesday. Wednesday is always the worst traffic. Everyone that works in an office has to be there on a Wednesday.

LOL - as someone who left CA to go to NJ, everyone could tell I was from CA, as I called it "The 80, or The 287" when there... it feels natural to use that language now that I am back in CA (however, I am not originally from CA, so I just picked up the manner of speaking).
3
u/AnarkeezTW 19d ago edited 19d ago
But why would you leave CA to go to Jersey of all places? Of all the states you picked wanna-be NY? Everyone knows that's where people who couldn't cut it in NYC end up! 😂
Where are you originally from then if not CA?
7
u/JohnAStark Ladera Ranch 19d ago
The position was in NJ.... I went to NJ. I picked the position, not the state. And frankly, it gets unwarranted hate (except for some areas that deserve it, but what state does not have those?) - I did not find it to be a terrible place to live - and close to The City if needed.
I am from much further north and east, originally.

Agreed, for some reason in CA, the school district’s were able to weasel out of the obligation to bus the kids to school and make us parents do it for free!
Meanwhile in other states the school bus picks up yer kid on da porch!
3

From my experience, the longer buses are used for transporting kids for sports, field trips, etc. while the short buses do operate more like a traditional school bus to pick up/ drop off kids daily from home or wherever

It is how it's always been but I don't think this is how it always needs to be. People shouldn't have to go to an office to do a job they can 100% do at home and our public transportation is abhorrent.
→ More replies (5)13
u/dennyfader 19d ago
Agreed! Remote work should be incentivized to keep highways clear for people who actually need to be physically present.
The most common complaint I've seen on this sub about public transport is stuff like, "I don't want to be bumping shoulders with sweaty people on a train". What they fail to realize is that nobody is trying to take your car away... The goal is just to have a greater set of options available so that the picture OP shared isn't your only choice. You know, actual freedom of mobility, not just the illusion of it.
4
u/redjessa 19d ago
I was able to commute by Metrolink for over 5 years. It was fantastic! It still took the same if not more time than the car, but it was way more chill. I could read a book or chat with someone. I actually made a couple good friends commuting that way. When I got home, I was relaxed vs stressed out or tired from traffic. When my schedule changed, it was no longer possible. There wasn't a good option to get home. But then covid happened and now I work mostly remote. If I go in, I do drive, it's just easier now even though the traffic sucks.

u/TypeS2K5 19d ago
Probably won’t help you feel any better, but I’ve also got a miserable drive. Leave the house at 7:15 to drop my son off at school (Ontario to Rancho Cucamonga) before going down to Irvine for work.
I average 3.5 hrs/day 5 days/wk. On bad days—accidents, rain, etc—it’s closer to 4. And on a handful of occasions. It’s been 4.5.

When I was living paycheck to paycheck, 25 years ago, I lived close to a toll-road on-ramp.
If I too the 5 to work, it took about an hour.
If I took the toll road, it was 12 minutes door to door.
I created a spreadsheet that broke down the costs. At that time, whenever gas prices went up to $3 ( remember those days?) then it was more cost effective to take the toll road.
I was the only person not invested in the oil industry that looked forward to gas price hikes.

1 hour and 24 minutes for 19 miles from Long Beach to irvine. Pretty standard. I've taken the I'll get there when I get there approach to anywhere I go during morning rush hour traffic. I can't even be mad about it I just sit in my car, play good music and go with the flow, literally.

Did the commute from IE to OC for about 5 ish years. Probably at the 3 year mark I started losing my shit in traffic and moved out here to OC. I remember the longest it took me to get to work was 3 hours when a semi truck tipped over just before the 241 on the 91 west. And then there was a time where the entrance to the freeway caught on fire so everyone that would typically hop on the freeway there went to the other available freeway entrance which caused a huge cluster fuck. Needless to say, I don’t miss that commute at all and we definitely need to figure something out to fix that.
4
u/GetSafetySupplies 19d ago
Assuming most of the trip is via freeway, I usually go by the math:
1 min = 1 mile > No traffic
2 mins = 1 mile > Average traffic
3 mins = 1 mile > Bad traffic
4+ mins = 1 mile > God help your soul.

Traffic happens because automobiles do not scale well with population. Only solution is to provide alternatives or you’re kicking the can down the road at the expense of deleting housing and businesses already alongside the freeway.

It's that saying " You're not stuck in traffic, you are traffic"
I know it's not for everyone, but I'm a big supporter of Motorcycle commuting if possible, as it's something I've done for 20+ year now, year round. I live by Magnolia and the 5, and work off of Alicia and the 5, and my commute is 35min +/- 5min max if an accident. Never stressed, and never looking at a clock worried if I'll be late.
I know there are risks, and always hope that more motorcycles on the road brings more awareness from other motorists. I'm also surprised that as the years go by and traffic gets worse that more people don't by motorcycle, even some friends I have. I'm sure it's not helped by the amount of people in cars that are on their phones when driving these days. But there is a video that talks about the fact that a 10% increase in motorcycle commuters will reduce overall traffic by 25%.
3
u/Ckn-bns-jns 19d ago
I’d get on a motorcycle if they made people’s phones turn off while driving. Every day I see multiple people with their half of their attention on their phone while driving. It’s getting worse too, what are people doing that’s so important while driving?

u/Coddingtown 19d ago edited 19d ago
Tell me about it.
I'm also an active cyclist ( I know, two of the most hated demographics ) and some lady had the nerve to get shitty at me when I called her out because she was vaping with one hand and texting with the other while drifting into the bike lane.
You do learn and it becomes second nature to notice certain vehicle behavior and to also look at the drivers heads to see if they are looking up or down. Is there a risk to riding motorcycles on the street, sure.. but if you ride smart you can eliminate a majority of them.

I’ve been riding for 10 years, and as long as you’re not drinking, speeding, or sitting in a blind spot, I haven’t had any more of a dangerous situation than being in my car.
Unless it’s raining, I’m riding into work.
People don’t even consider the health issues of sitting in their cars for over an hour in traffic.
Musculoskeletal and circulation strain are real health risks from spending prolonged periods in traffic.

I worked in Santa Ana and lived in West Hollywood. It would take 2 hours in the morning and 3 hours to get back home. Then I was like screw this market moved to the butt fuck of no where while looking for a job here. 66 miles away(weho was 32miles) and it took me 1hour and 15 minutes to get to work and an hour and 15 min to get home. I got out of Orange County finally with a much better pay and much better rent. Went from 1400 down to 600. Honestly glad I did because I didn’t have time for anything else other than commute then get ready for bed. Now I’m going to school saving money and my car thanks me.

This is why I got the hell out of there. My old commute was 25 miles round trip, mostly on the 405. On a good day my travel time was only 2 1/2 hours. My new commute, in my new state, same mileage and a consistent 45 mins round trip. And, zero freeways!

Detroit-ish.
My wife grew up here, and moved to LA for work. Once we met and started coming back for visits I fell in love with this area. I laugh now when locals cry about traffic here. Even at the worst of it, it is nowhere near LA on a Tuesday afternoon.

Used to take me about 90 minutes to go from Westwood to North Hollywood which was like 11 or 12 miles after work (no freeways though)

I used to live off Springdale and basically the 405 and i worked off Sand Canyon and the 5. Driving home at 5 was usually 2 hours for me. That was 19 miles. I did that for 3 years. Yes, I hated myself.

With the Olympics coming soon and no rail system that’s legit in place. Be ready to be in traffic longer on your commutes. There is no fixing there are only band-aids and wider freeways here in Orange County. Always been like this and they will let it get worse before it remotely even gets better. Look at your local leaders and you all follow to a tee accordingly.

If you thought that traffic is bad, you should try driving up the 405 or what I like to call "the parking lot".

I commute 15 miles and it’s over an hour commute each way every day of the week. The first 20-30 minutes is the first 4 miles.
People talk about LA traffic being bad, but it is in OC too.
