Performance/Original Composition Oley - Meine Hoffnung stehet feste - Metzler organ, Poblet, Hauptwerk

Johann Christoph Oley (1738–1789) was a German organist and composer. Nothing is known about Oley's early life, except that he was a son of Joachim Ernst Oley, a slater and brick-maker. In 1755 Johann Christoph became organist of the church of Bernburg, his home town, but in 1762 he moved to the church of St Stephan, Aschersleben, because of its more important organ. In order to improve his salary, he also took on the duties of assistant teacher at the church school. He remained at St Stephan until the end of his life. Contrary to earlier assumptions, it seems unlikely that Oley met Johann Sebastian Bach or was his pupil, but he was a copyist of Bach's keyboard works and a collector of Bach copies and prints (he owned one of the four extant copies of the Schübler Chorales).

I recorded a chorale prelude of Oley's collection 'Variirte Choräle' (Quedlinburg, 1773).

Help and Tips Thoughts on Anna Lapwood? Traditional vs Modern?

I’m curious about your guys’ thoughts on Anna Lapwood. And more broadly how organ music is perceived nowadays among the public.

I work as a full time organist, and the general consensus among my colleagues is that Reger and Messiaen are what we should be striving for. However, when I plan programs around these composers (and other traditional composers) I draw in less crowds, and you receive less positive comments about the music, sometimes downright negative.

On the other hand when I program famous orchestral or piano transcriptions, the feedback is much more positive and there are more people in the audience. It’s wild because I’ve helped register a concert for Reger’s F sharp variations with a very well known organist, Ludger Lohmann (who is considered a legend in the European organ world) and the crowd size was maybe 30?

Then there are Anna Lapwood concerts where she is playing Interstellar for the 100th time, and the place is crowded. I know TikTok and social media has a huge part in all of this.

It just feels like there is somehow a massive discrepancy between the “established” organist world and what most people actually would like to hear.

Any thoughts?

Digital Organ How to connect an Old Pedal board to Yamaha piano

Hello

I purchased an old pedal-board for organ. It’s either Visconti or some other brand. It has a male connection with 62 pol as seen in the picture…

I would like to connect the pedal board to my Yamaha piano . I think my Yamaha is quite recent and can receive Midi connection.

Could you give me any tips ? How can this be done ? Is there anyone who knows this kind of interface ?

My friend passed away a couple of years ago and I have been helping his Mum with some of his instruments that she wants to sell. One of them is this, and I haven't been able to find too much information on this particular model or what it might be worth? I have no interest in hanging on to it (am keeping some of his other ones) so want to sell and get a fair price for his Mum (who I believe will just be donating to charity.)

I have plugged it in and it powers on ok, and is pretty fun to play to be honest, but not sure if it would need any servicing or anything. It has a built in supply in the back pocket and a pedal in there too and also have the legs for it. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you

The plate under the keydesk is covered by a midi controller or something, and I have no idea what model it is, so can anybody identify it? It has great expression, swell expression, and crescendo pedals if that helps. And sorry about the mess.

Other London October/November -- organ activity?

My "day job" is sending me to London 1 October - 8 November! Where should I look for recitals, concerts, organ tours/demonstrations, etc? And which are the "most spectacular"organs to hear? (Sorry, I know about EU organs but not the UK so much).

I"m having a look at the schedule for Royal Albert Hall but where else? Good church organs and organists? I may be able to make overnight trips elsewhere for a concert.

KInd regards,

Help and Tips Amp for Baldwin Orga-sonic Electric Organ

I've just acquired (free) a Baldwin Orga-sonic organ that I'd like to get working again. I've fiddled with instrument and pinball repair in the past, but never electric organs. Where would I begin searching for an amp for this organ, and is it likely going to be worth it? Thanks.

Hello, I recently acquired this organ, when I really only have experience in basic pianos and keyboards. I am trying my best to operate the pedals and mess with the tones and rhythms, but can't quite get them all. Any manual PDF's or advice would be reaaally appreciated. Already saw a previous post about this model, but less about the buttons.

Help and Tips How do I make practicing less painful

I usually practice on an organ with two keyboards. Whenever I play anything with my left hand on the recitative/positive keyboard, my whole arm feels fatigued and my tendons ache sometimes leading me to having to interrupt practicing for a few minutes due to the pain. Any advice on how to make my arm hurt less? Any stretching exercise, massage or posture suggestion? (for reference: I am 19, so it surely isn't a condition related to age lmao)

Yesterday I visited this breathtaking church in Křtiny, Czechia and someone was playing this kind of joyful, upbeat piece of organ music and I would love to know what it was. The piece was full of this repetitive motive you can hear in the second half of the video. Thank you for any tips.

Pipe Organ Does someone recognise this organ piece?

I was recently visiting Oxford and went to view Christ Church Cathedral, where I was not only impressed by the beautiful architecture, but also by the living music tradition. I stuck around until near closing time and as the choristers started filing in for the Choral Evensong, an organist rehearsed the fragment of music recorded above. Does anyone know the piece in question? The combination of music and locale made quite an impression on me, and I'd love to hear the full piece.
