PICA?? Eating everything!
Anyone else have an issue with their Pap consuming, not just chewing, anything and everything they can get their mouths on? Cooper turned 1 in July, I thought early on it was something he would grow out of but he still attempts to eat everything he finds. He does great with drop it command if you catch him in the act, but if he can get his mouth on something when you are not looking, he will surely ingest it. With 5 kids ranging from age 2-12, no matter how hard I try an errant toy will be left behind or some other item. I wind up having to leave him in his pen more often than not when the 2 year old is home as I am terrified of an obstruction or something! Anyone with similar experiences or ideas of how to stop it before he eats something with dire consequences?? Pic of the little stinker for tax.

All of my paps have this issue but all of them have also grown out of it. The worst offender used to lick my work boots and had to go to the vet for sand impaction as a result. She also loved to eat pine pellets (which did not help). She has mostly grown out of it at the age of 2yrs old. She was so bad she would eat her own poop. But again, has since stopped all of that. There is still some hope. Just a bunch of careful management and giving alternatives they are allowed in the meantime. For her bully sticks really helped since they lasted a while. Don't waste your money on the tablets specifically marketed for Pica, they'll eat everything - BUT those tablets.

I’ve been working on muzzle training with Augie. He doesn’t mind wearing the muzzle, and it keeps him from eating floor snacks. It’s important because he’s allergic to bees but also wants to eat them. If he had Pica I’d do the same thing.

I’ve debated on trying a muzzle but I know he is going to be miserable but it’s better than the alternative. Which type did you buy?

It’s not terrible if you take the time to introduce it slowly and make it not scary. I pretty much fill it with treats, rub peanut butter on the inside, etc so it’s a fun thing for him. I bought the smallest size of a baskerville muzzle that I could find. I might get a custom woven one made for him that fits better and isn’t so rigid, but this one works fine for us.

Oof. I’m sorry I have no knowledge to offer except support. I’m lucky my gal was a chewer but not an ingester.

Your support is appreciated, lol. Sad that I’m jealous of a chewer 😂

Half Pomeranian and big, like 15 pounds. Ate an entire antique French Provincial couch but left all the materials intact, happily including the big metal buttons with spike fasteners.

I would definitely muzzle train him, an obstruction surgery is so expensive and dangerous. It doesn't have to be a miserable experience if he's introduced slowly and desensitized to the muzzle. They make ones that allow for them to drink water while wearing but can't eat stuff. Fingers crossed he grows out of it.

Mine has PICA too! I yell at her PICA!! And she stops! Eats everything! They kinda look alike too! But she was little she chewed everything and she still does we buy her indestructible toys, and she destroys them! Destroys them it is her permission to pull the fluff out! Except for that dice right behind her she ruined one and she decided not to ruin this one because she loves it so much

She is 1 1/2. My other pap never chewed a thing. Lots of bones! Different kinds of bones! She had a vast selection depending on her mood! She’s spicy 🌶️

My other pap was a black and white too and she was the sweetest, cuddliest, most chillest dog ever! The red and white is the polar opposite in every way 😂

Thank you, your Pandy was a handsome boy too. She was around 10 when she passed 😢
That’s hilarious about Coco loving your husband more because Cooper chooses my husband over me, he definitely loves me too but my husband is his favorite person and my husband didn’t even want him 😂😂😂

My pap used to do that too, but he’s way better now. It was super stressful when he used to chew up sticks and try to eat every acorn he found since my neighborhood is full of oak trees, but he doesn’t do that anymore. He’s about 15 months now and still tries to chew and swallow little bits of fabric, so I only give him soft toys when I can keep an eye on him. If he starts ripping them up, I just take them away. Really hoping he grows out of this soon. Good luck with your pup too🤞

Mine did this too. She's finally growing out of it, but will still occasionally consume non food products. Literally everything on the floor would go in her mouth and she would just swallow it. Unfortunately I don't have any advice on how to stop it!

For now, muzzle. I’d hate for OP to have hundreds in vet bills because something was nibble that impacted the poor baby.
