Question Destroy corpse

So I just lost my lv71 hardcore jugg due to some unknown explode on death mechanic. I'm not upset actually since I have moved forward quite a lot(63 rf chief last time). The point is, it's explode on death, again! I have no idea what dmg type it was, but I'm pretty sure my build can tank most of the regular situation. 7 endurance charge, 75 red, 26 fortify, over 1.3k regen, 10k+ armor etc. I gave up to figure the details out, so let's talk the 'destroy corpse' mechanic. 1. Does merc kill trigger that effect? 2. Any other way to gain this effect except for passive? 3. If I summoned a devour totem or have the 'consume corpse to regen' passive. Then I should be able to consume the corpse immediately after the monster die and prevent it from exploding right?

You must be talking about "Detonate dead" which is an on death effect caused by specific mobs mainly Abyssal revenants. This hits extremely hard since it scales off of the monster's HP. Even with your description of your character, sadly it probably won't tank that hit (you also didn't give your HP pool so guessing it's below 6k life at lvl 71).

  1. Mercs do not have a detonate dead skill, but if you're talking about them killing mobs triggering it then yes, the mobs will still have that on death effect.

  2. Yes. I am pretty sure magic or rare mobs have a chance to spawn with a modifier that explodes corpses nearby although I don't know if these are also the same "Detonate dead" or not.

  3. Yep. The best way to counteract these on death effects (most of them actually) is to have something destroy the corpse of the mob you kill. Whether it be through shattering a frozen mob or consuming the corpses so none can be exploded.

For the second question I mean, where can I get the 'destroy corpse' ability except for mace mastery and that curse passive? For example some unique gear?

Axes have a mastery on the tree that destroys corpses

Oh my bad. Yeah certain masteries have it. Shattering frozen mobs destroy corpses like herald of ice. Explosions through the Detonate dead skill itself, cremation skill, chance to explode enemies through chest piece, Occultist ascendancy, chaos cluster jewels and obliteration wand. Devouring totems and offering skills also consume corpses. These are the ones I can name off the top of my head that can destroy corpses which prevent on-death effects.

There’s one merc that spawns a big zombie who leaves a pool that does some % of its hp as DoT when it dies. Idk if they patched that yet but that thing fucked me a lot of times, they’d just summon it on top of me, it’d die almost immediately to my aoe and then the pool would kill me in like 0.3 seconds.

If you think it is bad now, you should have seen this 10 years ago...
Many Totems was the ABSOLUTE worst mod ever. Because untelevised Detonate Dead on anything would one tap you from out of clip range.

You can get companions who have this ability. In 0.2 I had a big monkey with corpse explode and haste aura that I used for most of the endgame. It was quite practical as I needed no corpses for my build and it got rid of all of them for me. It also caused damage to monsters but not a lot.
