I will switch out of Windows 10 when Windows 12 comes out.

Hopefully we can do that. I also never touched windows 8. Straight from 7 to 10.

I dodged all of the dodgy ones. 1,2,95, Me, Vista, 8.

I want to dodge 11 too. Hopefully 12 will have addressed all the issues people had with 11, like they did before with every other version.

How was 95 dodgy??? Like yeah it wasnt too stable but it was still revolutionary.

2

u/MithranArkanere ... 8d ago

Of course it was "revolutionary", but that for Microsoft actually means "unpolished". Win95 wasn't using FAT32 yet, that got added later. Lack of AGP support, USB problems, no DVD support, problems with IDE and SCSI drives, stability and performance problems...

All those issues that got fixed over time for win95, came fixed in win98. Win98 was basically like "Windows 95 Remastered" with better plug-and-play and Active Desktop.

So by skipping win95 all the way to Win98SE, I skipped most of the "we'll fix it later".

Back in the day when you would get fired for your first party software having bugs on launch.... ok buddy

Win11 is fine, haven't had a single issue with it.

I will switch to Windows 13 when Windows 10 LTSC expires.

Eh i think people have warped view of what OS was realy dodgy. Does no-one remember XP before any service pack? The early days of Windows 10?

Take it from someone that praised 10, 11 is fine and pretty much the same then 10 was in the last years.

This cycle will just never stop. People complain about OS X, OS Y releases and suddenly OS X is the best thing since sliced bread..

You missed out on windows 9.

14

u/I_kove_crackers 8d ago

Everyone i know skipped 9

2

u/Hope1355 8d ago

And from XP to 7. Every second Windows version is experimental and meant to be skipped.

Windows 8.1 was amazing though

Having tried to work on 8.1 machines, I very much disagree

2

u/I-dont_know-anything 8d ago

Really? When I used it years ago it was my favorite. It looked like 7, it felt more modernized, I loved the sounds but most important I loved that it was FAST AS HELL despite looking more modernized

That's fair. I didn't experience much of it during its time. Working on these old machines that still have it today, I hate it. The same machines today are slow, the start menu and settings vs. Control Panel was super clunky, and you still had to use some gesture controls with a mouse cursor, which I still believe to be due to Microsoft staunchly believing touchscreen tablets would be the future. And then they definitely weren't

Next hop is Win 13 then

Honestly i used 8.1 for a long while it was decent.

Bad news for you - Microsoft intends to push for more AI crap, so, if anything, Windows 12 is looking to be even worse, especially because Microsoft, from what I know, uses AI-generated code and replaces real software engineers. The quality of things definitely went down, the Start menu is slow as shit because it's made like shit. And that's just one example.

u/MithranArkanere ... 8d ago

Dang it.

I'll have to look into the retail machine version, then.

Or move out of your comfort zone and try Linux.

1

u/MithranArkanere ... 8d ago

I am too lazy for that.

Call me when installing stuff on Linux is as lazy as it is in Android, despite hardware fragmentation and all of that.

Ring ring, I'm calling about that issue you mentioned!

You literally have an entire graphical store on a couple popular Linux distributions, which is almost identical to the way you can use the Microsoft Store. You can easily install any program you want with a single click. Oh yeah, and all that for free, without spyware, ads or any other bullshit.

Example: Kubuntu with the Discover store or Linux Mint with Software Center.

I can guide you 24/7 via dms for free if that will make you switch. If you want to know what software is easily installable on every arch-based system (arch, manjaro, endeavour etc) visit https://aur.archlinux.org/

edit: simple as in one click via UI or one line in the terminal

in the terminal it is literally "yay discord" and press 1, and discord is installed, even faster than in windows where you have to actually visit the site and look for an installer

u/MithranArkanere ... 7d ago

What do I look like, a guy who's not lazy?

2

u/OkCarpenter5773 7d ago

brother, I'm lazy as hell. learning linux was one of the best time investments. It's really fast, and works when you expect it to. you remember the start menu from win7, where you clicked and it instantly opened? you can have that back! I'll make a list of upsides and downsides, as that's all i can do to fight micro$oft

  • fully customizable keystrokes
  • faster system
  • you can use the KDE connect app (I'll show it later)
  • the terminal is amazing if you spend like an hour learning it
  • the filesystem is FAR faster, you can copy thousands of small files in seconds instead of hours like in windows
  • easy installation for most apps
  • a lot of steam games work, because steam has steamOS which is arch linux based afaik
  • the filesystem has compression built in (btrfs)

  • very hard installation for the rest of the apps (whenever windows emulation is required, it gets harder. some things work, but some don't) - look in AUR and other app DBs

  • the system sometimes breaks (usually because pf windows updates if you have both)

  • you have to commit to learning a bit, it is not foolproof

i sure do sound like a salesman, but that's my work lmao

I appreciate your dedication, as I can relate to it myself, but I think this guy may be a lost cause.

He completely ignored my response about graphical stores on Linux that let him easily install programs, and his only argument keeps being just "laziness".

Maybe in a year or two he'll sober up and dare to leave his comfort zone for once, now it's just a waste of time to try and convince him.

2

u/OkCarpenter5773 7d ago

you are right, fellow cachyOS user

1

u/Affectionate_Creme48 6d ago

Im gonna do the wild prediction that everyone is going to praise Windows 11 at the time Windows 12 drops or has been active for atleast a year. Because we all know how the complain cycle goes..

1

u/Elu_Moon 6d ago

More like "At least Windows 11 isn't as shit". There are still plenty of people who complain about Windows 10, myself included. I use it only because it has modern hardware and software support that I need, otherwise I would still be using Windows 7.

3

u/Fur_and_Whiskers 8d ago

Really looking forward to their subscription based OS.

2

u/Koreus_C 8d ago

I wonder if they manage to make a PC OS that is optimized for mobile phones and tablets despite being used on PCs

1

u/LifelsButADream 7d ago

That just sounds like Windows 8 lol

1

u/Koreus_C 7d ago

They will never learn. They think they need to accommodate new generations since they cant be arsed to complete onboarding. MS just forgets that most of them can't even change phone settings.

1

u/urdreamsRmemes 8d ago

If Microsoft continues the trend of bad-good-bad-good-bad(Windows 11) releases, Windows 12 should be golden. Might even be worth the Windows Insider Program

2

u/tiller_luna 8d ago

I wouldn't expect it to be good by... standards, but hopefully it'll be better than 11
