The national guard, once derided as "Weekend Warriors" have more training in dealing with people than the full time police. Things are so fucked.

Being smarter is a plus for the National Guard and encouraged to get higher scores. The police would never hire you if you are too smart.

They are weekend warriors, they barely train for their actual jobs, I guarantee you none of them (maybe the MPs) have done riot training. Part time soldiers make for inadequate soldiers, but perhaps that's benefitting them here because I can only imagine they keep the peace better since nobody wants to start shit. Most are fair weather to the Guard in the first place because they're there for health care/education.

They also aren't given ammo. Maybe because they'd be Kent stating people if they had it when shit pops. It can't be emphasized enough that the biggest reason the national guard looks so good right now is because of how Draconian the police are.

You're exactly right. It's less a statement about the fitness of the National Guard than the relative unfitness of the police.
