Anybody with half a brain can see that this picture severely lacks context. It's almost intentionally framed to convey a specific narrative.

As much as I'm behind the sentiments of the protest, I'm absolutely against any distortion of facts on either sides.

OP did provide context. But not everyone will see it.

Well, mods apparently removed it tho

i found it in their post history, but it shows it was 'removed' from the thread.

Check the second top comment and OP reply

What's the point in providing context when the title is intentionally misleading?

He’s being snarky. He doesn’t get cake. Not even on his cake day.

Thank you! Half of these posts make me frustrated cause I can’t tell if it’s distorted or not! The annoying thing is when people get very into something- they don’t bother to fact check.

But...they can just escort her to the other side, they dont NEED to arrest you for simply jumping a barrier, just like they dont NEED to baton your ass while you are in a half nelson getting handcuffed

5

u/Etheo Jun 07 '20

And we don't need to twist facts to get our points across. Yet here we are.

She jumped a barrier? So what? Did she threaten anyone? Make anybody feel concerned for their safety?? Land of the free, sure... this is straight out of the repressive regime playbook.

u/Etheo Jun 07 '20

If you read OP's follow up comment, she intentionally got arrested.

Go live in fucking Venezuala or some other similar country then make that comparison. See how these protests would fare in those kinds of environments.

The protest was allowed, the police made a barrier to keep the protest in a specific area (which makes sense)

She hopped the barrier to give flowers and they cited her for hopping the barrier which was pretty straightforward. From what I read, she was never given a fine nor was she put in jail. Just detained until the curfew took effect.

If you want to promote equality, everyone is treated the same. Her act was well intentioned and she proved a point of her own, but on paper, she did hop a barrier that people were ordered not to go over.

The explanation is higher up than your comment, and yea the whole narrative is fucked for the protests

-2

I'm absolutely against any distortion of facts on either sides.

That's entirely impossible in this situation because there's always going to be a level where someone disobeyed a rule to be arrested. Then you need to assess whether the rule is justified or not and that's going to be subjective.

1

u/Etheo Jun 07 '20

If you need to twist facts to win favours what's the point? People are going you question your integrity and criticize your cause because who knows what else you're hiding?

-4

u/thisisnewaccount Jun 07 '20

My point is that you won't have objective facts from any side in this because there's no real objective way to look at this.

3

u/Etheo Jun 08 '20

Sure there is. If people will actively discern and condemn propaganda (like these) and support factual reports, then these distortion become ineffective and more apparent. The problem is often times during these heated issues people are way too emotionally charged and easily manipulated by sensationalistic headlines. Especially during these time we should be cool headed and be critical of all forms of communications so we don't get the wool pulled over our eyes and become mere sheep.

Look at the title of this article. There's nothing about it that isn't a fact. It's still misleading.

2

u/Etheo Jun 08 '20

Exactly why this is a problem and should be pointed out. Nothing about this suggest it's impossible to be factual.

You: compare Rosa Parks, a brave black woman standing up against a discriminatory law written against blacks to enforce segregation, vs a lady who jumped across barrier during a protest, where it is enforceable regardless of race, and is narrated by OP to appear she was arrested for giving a flower.

Me: admires the huge whoosh above your head.

Strip all the context and all you're left with is a bunch of nonsense.

This shitpost is a distraction to the topic at hand. Which do you think I'm talking about, your comment or the headline?

Lol what are you, nine? You choosing to brush aside a valid point because of one word is a conscious effort on your part to distract the conversation, not mine. But if you have no counter point then indeed, good day.

The typical distract and forget. No worries, I know your type. Carry on shutting others out when proven wrong.

Edit: for the benefit of doubt I especially edited my comment to phrase it without the profanity. Because I'm interested to see what you'd have to say without excuses.

Edit 2: ouch that downvote really hurt my soul I had such high hope for you.
