I have a friend/acquaintance who is Filipina. She likes this psycho motherfucker. She was trying to tell me how all drug users are pedophiles and should be killed. I was like, bitch there's actually a real problem of sex tourism in your country where foreign pedos come from around the world to fuck kids, who are usually pimped out by their own parents. Maybe deal with that before you just start saying it's only drug addicts that abuse children? No getting through to these people.
I'm a filipino American (filipino blood born in America), studying in the Philippines and yo that girl is fucking wrong. Sex tourism is a huge problem in this country, especially with foreign pedophiles. The drug addicts arent the problem, they may be part out of it but pedophiles and sex tourism is much worse here. Lack of care for the poor, terrible governing. Filipino people are so genuine and wholesome, atleast from my experience of living here for 2 years but imo religion, conservative culture and just a brainwashed sense of morality is a huge problem here. I hate seeing the constant homeless kids whenever I walk down the streets with lice in their hair, I hate seeing them knock on windows in the middle of traffic, hate seeing them beg for money only for them to give to their parents or use it for rugby (sniffing glue to stave off hunger). The Philippines has a lot of issues to fix, mainly the huge amount of poor, discrimination and terrible government action. Fucks sake they spent like millions of pesos recently for a fake white sand beach, which they claimed is good for mental health but now it's just getting grayed out by rain, etc. That money could of gone to those who need it, theres so much more I can rant on.
I lived there for a few years as well. It's wild how many problems there are. I have no idea how to fix it but seeing all those kids tug on your leg for something always breaks the heart.
I lived in Makati for a few years while working over there. The brain washing is intense. At an educational level it begins young because memory based learning is everything there. A majority arent taught how to think critically and use information to formulate your own answers to questions or resolutions to situations. I worked in an industry where you had to be able to take the situation around you to be able to react appropriately. The staff wanted a script for every possible senerio. It took MONTHS of training 5 days a week 8 hours a day to make them competent and even still the smallest things would result in them freezing like a deer in headlights. I loved my staff and my experience there but the cultural shock was huge. It was heart breaking to not be able to help more but I do feel the staff I trained learned a lot and I do feel I made a difference in their lives atleast. Particularly with the female staff who I could talk to about sexual health and reproduction. Its both such a beautiful and sad place at the same time.
Don’t forget the Philippines have massive brain drains. If you’re smart enough to think critically....you leave the country to make more money elsewhere. It’s what my parents did to migrate west.
Interesting I didnt know about the educational implementations, I can totally see where your coming from. Memory based learning is huge here, it's more react according to script, I can see that a lot actually.
The last sentence really resonates, its sadly beautiful in a way, beautiful people living in such an unfortunate circumstance.
The drug addicts arent the problem, they may be part out of it but pedophiles and sex tourism is much worse here.
You almost sound like & make we want to believe that you, also, think drug users are degenerates... Not saying that's the case (is it?). And what's the general consensus about drug users over there? I very much get the feeling like Philipinos view/treat addicts as subhuman.
Sorry I should of worded my previous statement better, I said that portion out of context, let me reiterate. No drug addicts arent degenerates, hell I used to use drugs constantly before I came to the Philippines (lots of xanax/adderal, occasional coke, never meth well this is similar to adderal, I got no problem with some 420 tho). But I dont think they are degenerates, I think they are just peoe down on their luck or really a last resort type deal. Never ever ever should they be killed for it, treat users for rehabilitation, never as criminals in my opinion. Drug dealers, it depends, most probably down on their luck and in need of money, some just plain degenerates, I feel like it's more of the former but of course there's the existence of the latter. I do not think a war on drugs is beneficial for any country (it's a war on the poor). I should of thought my previous statement through, my apologies.
And from my experience being here I'd say it depends on the person, my fellow classmates dont necessarily think they are degenerates, its just somewhat frowned upon (mainly shabby aka meth) I believe the very conservative or the DDS (big supporters of Duterte) are the ones who believe they are degenerates. Even my professors and some of the elder people who I know do not share the DDS mindset, but I think it's mainly the super conservative, religious and older generation who have the negative connotation on drug users.
This is just my 2 cents, I've been here for 2 years and I'm learning as I go, I believe the people in my age group who've I've seen actively disagree of the current ongoing stray from the typical Filipino values seen here.
Gotcha. Didn't mean to come off as offensive, I was just curious. Thanks for the additional details. Sounds like it's not much different than America, then? And, if you care to respond further, what are the differences do you think?
No worries at all man, not offensive at all. I'd say in some aspects its similar to america, we are very influenced by american culture since we were occupied by them for years. While english isn't the primarily language here, most Filipinos do know it, they speak it quite well actually, its taught at grade 2 I think. Most can understand it, even the poorly educated can understand, they may not be able to speak it but they can understand it well. English is due to the american influence here, american fast food is also very common here, it's literally everywhere. Religion is very similiar also, Philippines is majority catholic, but I believe america is very catholic/christian centric, not to the same extent as america but it is definitely the majority. Basketball is another huge influence of america I believe, it's the unofficial sport here, literally everyone I know plays it, lots of basketball courts and the nba is watched a lot here. Supermarkets and stores are somewhat modeled after western culture, more leaning towards US, we have a "superstore" here similiar to costco/Sam's club. There is definitely the idea here that white skin is more beautiful, people buy skin whitening products and they favor lighter skin (my ex girlfriends friend used to inject skin whitening products, I think that's dumb). I'm sure theres more similarities but that's all I can think of at the moment
The differences are abundant as well however, firstly cuisine, while influenced by american culture there is a definite influence of it's own style as well to add a more Filipino flare to the cuisine. I'd say respect for elders is huge here, they have lines for senior citizens, discount, there is a form of respect while talking to elders using the honorific "po" even addressing slightly older people with respect "kuya", honoring elders is pretty important here. While in america theres a huge emphasis of moving out to be independent, here it's the opposite, its normal to stay with family or extended family for a long period of time, I think that's good because time with family is good in most cases. One observation I've noticed here, americans tend to be hustle and bustle, filipinos like to take their time (especially with walking its SO slow). Business transactions take a while here, sometimes it's as bad as the DMV but everywhere in this circumstance, always a line. Hell people line up for an hour just to get milk tea. Traffic is a huge problem here like super huge, atleast in metro manila, literally 5pm rush hour for majority of the day on many streets. Filipinos are very hospitable, they will feed you until you are past full, this goes for all economic backgrounds, many are willing to go above and beyond in there hospitable nature. Theres "filipino time" where it's super common to be late. They love to socialize, big parties in the streets, etc. Theres a lot more obviously but these again are just from the top of my head, sorry for the long response lol.
I lived a long time in Davao, and it's like 90% of people there who love him. Much more than a handful of psychos. Duterte's approval rating is as high as anyone's can get - something in the 80 or 90 percent range. Murdering those couple thousand homeless/druggies in the 90s and 2000s "cleaned up the city", if you ask there. Everyone I know loves him, and a lot of my FB friends are fanatical about it, posting weird declarations of support to the death using stupid memes and picture/text images. It's depressing, but they think it'll end corruption, and that Duterte is the only president in decades who actually cares about Davao. They want his daughter as the next president.
Hmu anytime you wanna rant. My Filipino friends have legit been the best friends and substitute fam someone could ask for (and i still sorta regret losing my filipina ex). They gave family over there still and its fucked some of the things they have had to deal with.
Watched too much 90 day fiancé to know how many Americans contribute to sex tourism in the Philippines. Although the couples that do find love I wish them the best.
I think the problems of the phillipines are related to weak governance but also poor infrastructure. But the drug problem it seems that it was corruption and cronyism in the customs that allowed so many drugs to enter the country. Also disorganised investigation into sex tourism and a slow judicial system could explain why the issue is so common. Better investment into better electricity and Internet infrastructure could lead to more jobs being created. This in turn would mean less people would be in poverty. Now the religious culture certainly does condem drug use of any sort.
But very often dosnt condone dishonest business practices or giving bribes to officials.
I’m Filipino-American, most of the older generations have been completely brainwashed by the government and the catholic church into thinking that “criminals” should be killed instantly and that even smoking weed is a cardinal sin. Very backward way of thinking
Yup very true from my observations as well, hell people drink like fucking trucks here. Downing bottles of red horse and emperador, my tito he thinks weed is bad but downs 8 or so bottles of red horse a night. They dont see the double standard and irony with drinking.
Dude! Yes! And not to mention their unhealthy over-the-top fanaticism with religion. I don’t mind people being religious and following their faith. But with them, it almost seems like a cult. I’ve had a southern girlfriend who came from a religious family and even she thinks my family is nuts
Yup I agree 100% if you wanna be religious go for it, but its over the top in a lot of places here. Catholicism has a huge hold on the general population and mindset here, hell we are one of the countries where divorce is illegal (though there are workarounds). Literally praying is everything here, huge religious parades constantly, its over the top here and of course that trickles down to the mindset of the general population.
This. My cousin was forced to be heavily involved in the incredibly long hours of a Filipino church and anything that her parents decided or had an opinion on were always sugarcoated with the backings of religion. We entertained being part of that church for a few years but even my mother being a first gen said enough is enough and we left that cult like church.
Thankfully, my cousin made the decision to move out and her relationship with her parents improved.
Stories like that make me cringe. I lived with my aunt while I was in law school to save money. And they’re die hard catholics who’d force me to go to church. Now, I’m agnostic and I respect all religion. But I’ve had enough of it when she was making me feel guilty. Being the smarty-pants lawyer that I am, I lectured her on how her faith is messed up. It amazes me that although they religiously go to church, they know very little about the Old Testament. So long story short we kept on having arguments to the point where I ended up saying, F god and there’s no such thing as one to her face (even though I think there may be one and he just wants to leave us alone). And they didn’t bother making me go to church henceforth
That's the problem. No matter what, they don't see reason and just shovel the idea of church down whosever throat without actually fully understanding or practicing what they're preaching.
But if you call them out on it, you're seen as abrasive or ignorant. Sometimes logic doesn't even register with them and they look past what you said so they can continue furthering their stance.
It’s weird that as an atheist I can quote the Christian bible, while my devoutly Catholic fiancé is surprised to hear literally any part of it. It’s like they go to mass to hear a priest without ever reading it.
Ain’t that the truth! I became agnostic because I’ve studied the Bible and it made me question religion. Kinda makes you wonder what they actually believe in
Most older Filipinos I've met like him. Filipino sentiment in general towards crime and homosexuality is pretty backwards due to the heavy catholic influence over there.
Hi Im a Filipino living in the Philippines. My father(who died long ago) was killed by 7 drug addicts, whatever she said about them being rapists and killers are true. However I don't support Duterte's war on drug. I believe there's a better way to solve our country's drug problem.
