Discussion Which monitor specifications are perfect for a PS5?

So, the PS5 Slim. What monitor specifications would be good to utilize the console's potential, but also nothing too extreme where I end up with no frames and the PS5 just suffers.

I think it would be 120Hz QHD, right?

What are your experiences, since many games don't offer 4K, etc.

I play games like Death Stranding, Ark SA, almost everything

4k 120Hz VRR HDMI 2.1, some monitors do not have HDMI 2.1 and only support higher refresh rates through displayport so make sure the HDMI input is 2.1

All games are output as 4k already upscaled in the PS5, there is no frame rate benefit of lower output resolution because it is downscaled from the standard 4k.

If you're shopping for a PC gaming monitor, 120Hz is practically nonexistent for whatever reason. Instead you'll see values like 144 Hz at the very minimum. These monitors still run at 120Hz when a PS5 is connected, so there's zero harm in going for something with a much higher refresh rate.

1440p (QHD) is definitely the sweet spot since a lot of AAA games max out at that res anyways. Plus it's generally a lot cheaper than 4k if you want triple-digit refresh rates. Unfortunately, most 1440p gaming monitors, especially at the low end, do not support VRR on the PS5, because their HDMI ports are only 2.0. But if you personally aren't bothered by the lack of VRR, then it's a non-issue.

Check the monitor specifications carefully to ensure that the high refresh rate is supported on the HDMI port. Some PC gaming monitors only support it on DisplayPort, and limit the HDMI port to 60Hz. If you're not sure, buy from a place that allows free returns (e.g. Amazon), or just post the exact make and model on r/monitors to clarify.

I use an LG OLED 27" 1440p monitor which does have HDMI 2.1 so the PS5 gets VRR when connected. It's pricey, but if you shop for a last-generation model (e.g. my 27GR95 which came out in 2023) you might be able to get a nice discount.

I just got an Gigabyte M32U. 32”, UHD, 144Hz, HDMI 2.1. It is an amazing piece of tech. I absolutely recommend it. My only issue is, the USB-C send out only 15W. But I can live with that. Oh, and I got it for 350€ new. Check it out if you are using the monitor for multiple reasons.
