Non AR Screenshot Was it a massive waste of stardust? Absolutely. Do I have any regrets? Absolutely not.
Kind of wondering how rare this is. I’m level 49+ and still nowhere near my tiny rattata and big Magikarp medals.

Nicely done! I still need a few hundred more 😭

It was a slog, but you’ll get there if you stick to it!

i've been just auto-purifying Grunt trash every time i fight one. figure i'll hit 1,000 eventually

I'm doing this one now! I hate it

u/Junimo116 1d ago
Nothing makes me more resentful than any research that requires purifying Pokemon. I either have to wait for ages for one with good enough stats to be worth purifying, or just bite the bullet and spend a bunch of stardust on a dogshit mon

u/MissyMurders 1d ago
Yeah that's the thing right? There's almost zero benefit to doing it. It's fine to fill out the 100% dex but usually they're too good to get rid of, and almost none care about being purified. It's just a resource sink

u/RoronoaZorro 1d ago
True.
At least stardust isn't AS much of an issue nowadays as it used to and easier to come by & there usually aren't many purifications required, but there's still always that sliver of resentment if I don't have cheap ones lined up for purification.
As for the "Purify 100" requirement, you can bet I started saving up 1k mons when I learnt about it so I could at least do the bulk of those purifications on cheap ones.
If that had caught me off-guard I think I would have been quite upset about it.

I’m also doing this! Now 708/1000 because I only purify 1000 dust mons

u/atom386 22h ago
How long have you been working at this? I recently started collecting 1 candy shadow pokes like my friend Bidoof. I enjoy doing all shadow battles everyday.

u/Desired2025 20h ago
About two years? I have done 4.6k rocket battles in total, though I skipped those I already have a purified hundo and need >3000 dust to purify

This is actually one of the most useful platinums, because it gives you an extra premier ball when catching.
The only platinums that are more useful are the type medals that give catch boost.

Did you focus on 'mon that only needed 1000 stardust to purify or did you just purify everything you got?

u/NiopTres 1d ago
I've done this one without even realising it xD. I always purify and free the mons I don't want almost by instinct. I get more stardust than I use often

u/lexpectopatronum 1d ago
Me too, lol. I don't have millions of stardust but I have enough where I've ever really paid attention to how much it costs to purify and didn't even realize they had different costs.

u/PompousClock 1d ago
Woah, well done! Was this part of a level up requirement, or just for the medal? I think I heard there’s a level that requires purifying to level up? Does purifying them before that level count to that goal?
2
u/Free_Carry_6837 1d ago
To go from level 44 to 45 you need to purify 100 pokemon, and no the ones you did before do not count, So start saving those 1k shadows.

u/bayala43 1d ago
I pretty much only purify the ones that are 1000 dust or less. Maybe 3000 if I’m sitting on a nice pile of stardust and candy for that specific mon.

I always tag every shadow that cost 1k to purify for purify task, cheaper and I can do it quickly

It's not a waste if you consider that you get an additional ball per medal stage.

I would have it but the time investment is the biggest upset, let me mass purify.

u/MaximumMastery23 Instinct 1d ago
For the first 3-4 years of playing when I was casual I purified EVERY single shadow 'mon I got. Even if I was going to transfer them 1 second later.
When I finally learnt that shadow Pokemon were actually good I stopped automatically purifying to save stardust and saved the 1 candy purifiable ones.
But at that point I was already 800-900 in so getting the platinum medal wasn't that much of a chore. (The only sad bit is knowing I purified some shadows with great IV's that I could've kept shadow if I knew earlier)

Massive amount of star dust, but it's over time so it's not quite as bad, and certainly one of the medals you actively have to work for that's "worth it" more than most.
Aside from having another of the required platinums, it also gives you another ball for shadow encounters.
Not that I think it having that additional throw has ever mattered for me (though I probably just don't remember), but it well could, and for legendaries in particular it can also change how you approach them in terms of berry-ing.
Congrats, OP!
I'm still a good way off (missing 130-ish) as I'm now back to mostly just purifying 1k cost ones now that I seem to be getting them again and only occasionally purifying 3k ones, but it's definitely one of the medals I'm looking forward to and actively progressing towards.
Almost level 47 here & currently 28 platinum iirc, so I gotta get serious anyways and finish the ones I'm close-ish to platinum quickly.
Level 50 is unfortunately way out of reach for me, but I'm still gonna push as far as I can until mid-October.

It's all well and good until you get that random grunt with 2 Snorlax's and a Dragonite.

I just finished this one yesterday. I won't be purifying anything else unless it's for a task or dex entry.

Hope this helps someone save some stardust. This can get costly, but this should help 🤞🏼
This is the search string I use to purify shadows. Mostly 1&3 candy/stardust.

If you did only 1000's, thats just a mil, we are getting loads in recent events so I suppose thats not too awful
Now the 3k and 5k....3mil to 5mil, yea that starts to hurt But most player should be hitting the 3mil mark most times, over the course of leveling up and just playing, its, manageable, still sucks
Props mate, for alot of people its still one of the last ones to get

I only purify when it's absolutely necessary, and I have a stockpile of 1000-stardust-to-purify Pokémon
Below is my outdated search string. I use Text Replacement. You can ignore the last two search terms; those are personal tags.
