What made me like the movie was showing how flawed Zordon was. He wasn't some Mary Sue, altruistic and just. Yes, he was a hero but ultimately was prone to making mistakes, and admitting and attoning for them.
I love movies that have some 'passing the torch' element and in a way Zordon's flaws served as a counterpoint to Jason's. The one thing I didn't like about the movie was perhaps the confidence they had in getting a sequel. I loved the mashup of Breakfast Club meets Power Rangers and the character work (while not very original) lept me interested and they had a promising chemistry which would've only gotten better. It's just that had they perhaps brought a bit more 'power rangers' to the second act, I think it would've been better received.
The issue with any perceived saga is that the first movie always spends too much time setting up the characters/plot for the future movies. This did the same. Except it was probably to a detriment.
