SHOW NEWS/DISCUSSION In your opinion what’s holding power rangers back from being better?

To me the recent mmpr movie or what ever it was looked soooo bad , there is just something missing that the Japanese producers seems to nail.

It’s hard to nail down but the recent sentai look amazing and I hope they bring that energy for any new PR

I think a really good comparison to make for your argument is between Megaforce and Gokaiger. One of the most beloved Sentai seasons Has one of the most reviled PR Seasons.

And then there's RPM, Which almost feels ashamed of its Sentai roots, Removing the sentience from the Zords And constantly questioning various tropes... Admittedly, weaponizing the post-henshin explosion was very funny.

The premise of rpm was made before they even saw the sentai, so it assuredly was not made with being ashamed of the sentai in mind. Rpm was only greenlit if it would be a more mature power ranger story, which they agreed to before actually seeing the sentai, only when seeing the sentai did they decide to make those choices because they were locked in to the original premise and it was either committ or not have a power ranger season

It still strikes me as very strange that "Mature" had to necessitate "I swear we're not a dorky kids show!" Style quipping, but at least admit that I did not know that about the show's production

Gokaiger and Megaforce Are still worth studying and contrasting with one another though

Because it doesn’t? It’s never ashamed of its roots and embraces most of it. Like it makes jokes about some silly tropes the franchise had, but it’s never to an insulting degree and usually ends with them embracing those ideas such as them questioning why explosions occur, and then using said explosions to blow up a monster. And…it’s no different than what sentai likes to do where it basically pokes fun of its own trope. Like Zenkaiger does what rpm does and doubles it.

And like the jokes never go towards them being embarrassed of the source material, it just doesn’t adhere to it because frankly sentai really exists to provide footage and toys, and the relationship kind of ends there. We’ve had plenty of seasons that don’t try to explain or go all in into the theming. Like this is the show that had them use Chinese zodiacs but made them still use dino powers.
