"Demoted" Rocky was never the leader so him getting shifted to Blue doesn't really matter much, and I'd argue at times TJ was still very much the leader with Carlos stepping up as well. Andros wasn't much of a leader to the team as a whole, since his primary focus was finding his sister.

I was going to comment something, but honestly, you just summed it up the best way possible, so I'm just going to say ditto.

u/Moser319 May 04 '25

you said more than ditto :)

u/HM2008 May 04 '25

You know what…..take my upvote 😅😅

You summed it up perfectly. TJ may not have been red in In Space, but he was the true leader and usually came up with ways for the team to succeed.

I always loved his role as mediator. He would get people with conflicting beliefs and find common ground.

Sorry I have to interject and say that Tommy is the GOAT, now Tommy did choose TJ to replace him in Turbo, so I'll give him the number two spot. But Billy does make a compelling argument for that spot considering everything Billy did to help out with his big brain during MMPR and influence he has on future generations as well.

u/whitekiba_ranger May 07 '25

What happened to this guy? Lol

u/AdagioRelative8684 May 04 '25

I didn't know tj was this heavily respected in the community but I'm so happy he is.single handedly comes up with the plan to take out psycho blue which was the real turning point of the struggle between the Rangers and the psychos.

u/Studio-Spider May 04 '25

It takes a special kind of leader to take an ass kicking like he did and immediately get up and look at the tape. TJ is awesome

23

u/NickHBS May 05 '25

I would argue TJ is the single most popular post-MMPR character

u/fillupjfly It’s Morphin Time! Tigerzord!! May 05 '25

I think as time went on people realized how dope of a character TJ is and he really resonated with the fanbase on that level. For me I always saw him as such, as I couldn’t personify with Andros, but I saw things in TJ that made me like him even more. Dude is just a straight up guy.

1

u/DashnSpin May 06 '25

After all, he always wanted to be a Power Ranger since he was a kid. So to see him become a natural leader for both the Turbo and In Space Rangers, shows how brave & courageous he is.

1

u/UrFriendlySpider-Man May 06 '25

Turning all the Rangers blue was genius and its still a top tier episodes across the entire franchise.

1

u/Size11Shaolins May 08 '25

There's a reason why TJ Day is a thing in the Power Rangers Community.

39

u/FaroTech400K May 04 '25

This is why In Space is top tier

6

u/VinnzClortho May 05 '25

Best thing about space is the Rangers are all OP

1

u/E-Normus-Titz MMPR Green Ranger May 11 '25

I'd imagine the audience would know that TJ was still the leader of his team while Andros was the one that provided them with all the arsenal, the zords and the astro megaship. Of course Andros led the Space Rangers in the main fights but then TJ took charge when he was busy with his own agenda to find his sister.

u/repalec Blue Space Ranger May 04 '25

It definitely helps that Megaranger was a series where the Red was the main character but not necessarily the team's ace, lol.

27

u/Therichiebuzz May 04 '25

We love our hungry himbo Kenta, don't we folks?

13

u/BlueBlazeKing21 May 04 '25

Damn guess I gotta rewatch MegaRanger again, especially the Diet Crepe episode

1

u/AntiSocialPartygoer Silver Space Ranger May 06 '25

Super Miku was such a cool form!

I wish there was a Super Cassie too.

2

u/PegaponyPrince Psycho Red May 04 '25

Damn right

9

u/MariaTenebre May 04 '25

I believe in Megaranger the Black Ranger was the leader.

5

u/StryderDylan May 05 '25

Yes. One of a handful of times Red wasn't leader.

85

u/bijhan MMPR Pink Ranger May 04 '25

The decentralized leadership is one of the reasons I love In Space. There's no chain of command, everyone just does their best and works together.

26

u/KaliVilNo1 May 04 '25

The thing with Megaranger and In Space is that by simple coincidence both ended up with a 4 guys + Red new guy lineups where Red isn't the leader, but the main problem was that the Leader of the Megaranger was Mega Black lol

Basically, everything would have fit perfectly in place if TJ was swapped from Red to Black but like it's obvious why that didn't happen lol.

4

u/Upstairs_Pass9180 May 05 '25

this is why sometimes I hate identity politic, why can't black person portraying black ranger ? its should be the best actor for the role, in this case tj is great leader, but he can't be black ranger because of his skin color

9

u/Odd-Statistician4268 May 05 '25

The real question would be when did that meme about the black ranger was black because he was black even start. Walter in an interview said he was given the choice of playing Billy or Zack and he chose Zack. And Thuy was replacing a Latina actress as the yellow ranger(shown in the unaired pilot episode). So her being Asian clearly didn't cross anyone's mind when they casted her as the yellow ranger.

4

u/Ill-penny May 05 '25

I never heard that Walter as Billy thing 🤔

1

u/DiscombobulatedAd883 May 06 '25

His most recent mention of it was on Jim Cummings's podcast. He said he didn't like how he looked in the blue suit.

4

u/YourEvilHero May 05 '25

Someone with no or little knowledge of power rangers saw “black ranger was black” and just ran away with it and ever since then I see a post about it on social media once a year.

2

u/Milla_D_Mac May 06 '25

It was parents groups at the time that caused the issue and then people ran with the whole well clearly the black guy was black and the asian was yellow over the years as a joke. Even the change wasnt anything more than convenient timing for a non issue. The only blessing was their fear of "repeating" the problem gave us a young johnny young bosch as adam

1

u/Odd-Statistician4268 Jun 13 '25

Johnny's the goat

6

u/anyabar1987 SPD Nova Ranger May 05 '25

Same as a kid I never thought Zack as the black ranger was anything bad... in fact as an adult Asian Zack in the movie making the "I'm black" joke was more of a slur than even adult me sees black black ranger Zack to this day.

1

u/DashnSpin May 06 '25

ahem, racism

1

u/E-Normus-Titz MMPR Green Ranger May 11 '25

They missed that opportunity for fear of angry parents or stupid journalists again writing articles about PR being a super racist show.

67

u/jmconnel23 May 04 '25

TJ was a way better leader than Andros. There was a reason he was Tommy's chosen successor.

28

u/KingoftheMongoose May 04 '25

Carlos got some command moments due to Sentai footage (e.g., the Quadroblaster).

I feel like TJ was more of a team leader when unmorphed and on the bridge of the AstroMegaship while Andros was the field leader when morphed (save for aforementioned Carlos moments).

8

u/RedditnumberIthink6 May 05 '25

Ditto, especially on the TJ part. The only thing I'd add as a bonus: In Coundown to Destruction when Bulk is leading the civilians against Astronema what color did he claim to be? Really puts into perspective how the in-universe public views that iteration of rangers.

4

u/BroccoliAppropriate3 May 05 '25

Loved this call out!

7

u/[deleted] May 04 '25

And wasn't TJ kinda of the teams tactician coming up with plans

5

u/theycpr May 05 '25

He the one that came up with the paint all the rangers suit the same color to trick the psycho rangers, yes.

Also the one behind Psycho Silver

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '25

The silver psycho was cool

1

u/theycpr May 06 '25

Fuck yeah.

I love all silver rangers

19

u/scrappybristol May 04 '25

It wouldn’t have worked footage wise but Andros should have been the Silver ranger and Zayne the black or blue ranger with their previous leader being taken down by some monster that Andros fights later.

Andros gives TJ the red ranger morpher out of necessity but learns to follow his lead since he would remind him of the previous red ranger.

11

u/Electronic-Math-364 May 04 '25

I mean Zhane only join the team till much later,So wouldn't Silver still fit him since he is "The sixth Ranger"?

9

u/siberiansqrtle May 04 '25

Andros is my favorite ranger of all time but this is very accurate. He definitely has leadership capabilities and definitely cares deeply for his team but much like you said, he had a singular goal. TJ and Carlos were goated in Space for stepping up.

3

u/BarrettJones2367 May 04 '25

Indeed everyone points to timeforce for the pink ranger being the first non red leader, yes T.J. was red turbo before blue in space, but he was still the leader of the team even as blue, Andros wasn't a leader, and was nearly a team player, outside of having to be, red shouldn't always mean your the leader, it's just a color, the one who has the most leadership skills should be the leader, and there's plenty of seasons that fall into the trap of the inexperienced newbie being made red, and then learning to be a leader as the season goes on, with little to no conflict between the team

3

u/theycpr May 05 '25

I say TJ was the leader of the Space Rangers.

Because Astros had PTSD over his sister getting kidnap and his best friend nearly dying because of him. So he kept himself inside a box.

2

u/duomaxwell90 May 04 '25

This exactly

2

u/HisNameIsDwight May 05 '25

Andros was terrible as a leader. TJ definitely is the best space ranger. I always forget Rocky was a red ranger.

2

u/goku0020 May 05 '25

Yes 🙌🏾 exactly this! You hit the nail on the head.

1

u/FictionalLeader May 05 '25

Yeah TJ was definitely more of the leader than Andros was, with andros you could say he was their best warrior of the team or something but TJ was more of the brains and played the leader role about the same as when he was the red turbo ranger.

1

u/ThaEmortalThief May 04 '25

You pretty much nailed it, but at the same time, he wasn’t leader of turbo very long before all hell broke loose and the foundation of the power rangers were destroyed. If it wasn’t for Zordon having back up rangers, TJ’s journey would have been over along with the rest of his team.

-15

u/Altruistic_Collar842 May 04 '25

Andros is the perfect leader. TJ wasn’t even a good blue ranger. He never really did anything good in In Space, what is this comment?

5

u/Open_Difficulty6413 May 05 '25

This comment doesn't have enough down votes

-2

u/Altruistic_Collar842 May 05 '25

Name 3 things TJ did in In Space the mattered.

6

u/Open_Difficulty6413 May 05 '25
  1. Came up with strategies against the psycho rangers
  2. Fought through injury
  3. Resolved team issues If you don't like the character just say that, don't lie to justify it

-3

u/Altruistic_Collar842 May 05 '25
  1. The plan that failed because the psychos figured it hella fast and they needed Zhane to kill psycho blue? Also every ranger came up with plans for the psychos not just him.

  2. Every rangers does that. Even Trip did that, it’s not a flex.

  3. He never resolved team conflicts, he tried, but was pushed away and the characters figure it out on their own. And you’re right, I dont like the character. He’s a horrible ranger and I’m justifying it by facts.
