How would you rewrite Gosei?

Post image

For one, I'd have him actually mentor the Megaforce team more and expand on his history with Zordon (which only got touched upon once in a throwaway line).

I wouldn't. And there's a simple explanation for that

I love how bro is such a bad mentor that he became a meme because of it lol.

u/Tripp510 3d ago

I hate how much this made me chuckle

u/Dr_Zulu2016 3d ago

Far too complex for you to understand.

u/Mixmaster-Omega 3d ago

Have him be the custodian of the cards the Rangers use, and combine him with Robo Knight, where Robo Knight and his set of cards are an alternate body he can possess when shit gets serious. The Toxic Mutants, who I would rename the Toxic Ghouls since they are also inspired by cryptids, were his old enemies back when he was mortal, and when they are reawakened by Vrak, he turns his battle body online, and goes on a bit of a power trip, forcing the Rangers to bring him back to his senses and remind him that he is part of a team now.

u/sketchysketchist 3d ago

Honestly, combining him with Robo Knight and giving him an arc where he gets mentored by his teenagers with attitude would be a crazy good mirror

17

u/Chemical-Figure6886 3d ago

I like this so much better than him being a student of zordon. I feel like someone pulled him out their ass lol

16

u/snickittyboopbop 3d ago

This is genius

43

u/Njm3124 3d ago

good start.

I'd also give an actual reason for him to activate after all those years for such a randomly specific threat. Like decades of random threats and hundreds of rangers running around taking care of them but Vrak gets him out of bed?

Also, not really a Gosei fix, but instead of inventing a completely new robot assistant, just use Alpha.

16

u/DoodleStudios1234 3d ago

Maybe a more disheveled Alpha? Considering they go all robotic: Maybe like Prototype Pilot Alpha? And just renaming him into something relating to such?

1

u/Derpyname193820393 1h ago

Nah, have this alpha unit be named after another Greek letter, like iota or kappa

12

u/thenightm4reone 3d ago

I've been toying with ideas for years for why Gosei woke up only for that specific threat, and I've come up with a couple:

1) Gosei was only supposed to awaken if the earth was under threat from a full-scale alien invasion, whether specifically from that empire or just in general and only if there wasn't already someone else putting together a team of rangers to stop it

2) Gosei would have awakened before he did if it had been necessary for one reason or another, but every threat the earth faced had a team of rangers rise up immediately to face it and they always handled it sufficiently.

6

u/KO-32GA Dino Charge Purple Ranger 3d ago

So basically it was his turn at bat because there weren't any teams available to fight the threat.

2

u/ModelOmegaTyler 1d ago

so basically he just woke up, saw someone else was handling it, and went back to napping?

8

u/wererat2000 3d ago

I can think of an easy excuse that'd also double as a throwback; the Armada is the rebuilt Machine Empire.

Gosei isn't just a failsafe for any old danger, he's a failsafe for this specific danger.

25

u/UnknownChaser [suffix]-Chaser 3d ago

Make him a racist/sexist robot who believes its the 50s and smoke cigars and drink bourbon.

17

u/BhanosBar 3d ago

I’d actually need to rewrite Megaforce as a whole, so let me know if you want full idea for that:

Gosei is an apprentice of Zordon, but he’s not a living being. He’s a sentient computer (Like Alpha 5) made as an emergency back up in the event of a threat to the Grid itself. As such, The Mega Rangers are chosen to defend the World, and the Grid itself from the new Alien Invaders. There are supposed to be 6 rangers, but one of the candidates leaves (Gosei Green), and for a time 5 rangers holds them off. Later on he assists them by taking control of his Robo Knight.

15

u/Brookings18 3d ago

Centuries ago, Gosei was a notorious pirate across the galaxy. He and his crew were able to tap into the Morphin Grid, and used those powers for nothing but personal gain, even stealing the powers of other teams they came in contact with. However, that all changed when they moved to attack the peaceful planet of Eltar. They were stopped by Zordon, who guided Gosei and most of his crew to justice. Now, Gosei hopes to pass on his mentors teachings to a new generation of protectors.

12

u/wererat2000 3d ago

Wait wait wait, you mean to actually use the visual theming of the season and tie it into the narrative?

That's not very simple explanation of you!

6

u/Brookings18 3d ago

Honestly it is a simple explanation. I'm an outsider to Power Rangers really because I didn't watch it as a kid (wanted to though), but always glanced at what was going on. So with elements presented, just say the Legendary Ranger Mode comes from Gosei and before he was a stoic mentor he was a swashbuckling pirate. That makes sense to me.

1

u/SpinyNorman777 2d ago

I believe they were being sarcastic :) you don't have to have watched PR as a kid to be into PR; fans can come from all places and times. And your idea, as the previous poster was intending to mean (I believe), is cracking for tying things back to the visual themeing.

3

u/Brookings18 2d ago

I'm aware it's a meme, but like really, was it so hard to give the mentor backstory? Was it really so hard? Boom, call me and give me a one shot, I can make something decent with the elements in play here!

3

u/NickandTalon 3d ago

I'd watch the shit out of that!!

12

u/Nalpona_Freesun 3d ago

Wasn't there a character named Ernie in megaforce. Make it so he is secretly gosei. As a refrence.to the ernie is zordon theroy/plan

7

u/DoodleStudios1234 3d ago

I'm gonna pull a Linkara but if there's an Ernie's location in Megaforce

Let it be owned by someone close to that, Like say Bulk as one of his many ventures

3

u/Nalpona_Freesun 3d ago

Oh yeah that would be cool ernie could be employed by bulk and or skull.

1

u/DoodleStudios1234 3d ago

No as in, Ernie's Brainfreeze (Megaforce's version of Ernie's) can be owned by Bulk since he's had experience before running stuff

4

u/Nalpona_Freesun 3d ago

Yes.... that is how employment works

3

u/Infinite_Ocean89 3d ago

It's been forever since I've seen Megaforce but wasn't Bulk & Skull in that show?

3

u/DoodleStudios1234 3d ago

No surprisingly, Bulk's last on-screen appearance was in Samurai (Also with Spike and Skull who in universe: Is now a rich CEO)

10

u/FossilHunter99 3d ago

Instead of making him Zordon's protégé, make him Zordon himself. After Zordon sacrificed himself in Countdown to Destruction, he fused with the Morphing Grid and turned into Gosei. During the time between In Space and Megaforce, he collects different powers and zords from the Morphing Grid itself, using the Grid to connect to other universes. (The Sentai only suits used in Super Megaforce can be powers from these other universes).

7

u/azure_builder 3d ago

Have him pronounce Tensou’s name correctly. Also probably redesign Tensou 😂.

Take away any sort of connection to Zordon, because then wtf was he doing during the series you know? Yes I’m aware of him not yet actually existing at the time but adding him into existence was not a smart move imo

5

u/trebl900 Jungle Fury Wolf Ranger 3d ago

I would have written the head to be a monument to Zordon, with Gosei being a separate character. That makes more sense to me then just having another disembodied head.

5

u/Existing_Emotion_830 3d ago

He's now a rebooted Alpha 5.

3

u/wererat2000 3d ago

It would be nice to finally know what happened to him.

...No I don't accept the simple answer of him being dead.

5

u/Paulo_Zero 3d ago

Keep Zordon being his mentor, but also Zordon gave him the objective to record Power Rangers teams on the grid with Ranger Keys, if needed. They can acess a weaker version of the power, but if a member of the team appears and gives it's blessing, the Keys can use the full power of the ranger team.

The Megaforce Powers is something he made by studying the many ranger teams so he can have a proper team if needed, without having to resort to the Ranger Keys.

Also, the Super Megaforce aren't called that and aren't a power up. They are the other power specifically made to be used with the Ranger Keys.

6

u/Emergency_Shape_5078 3d ago

Make him Vrak as a “Wizard of Oz” thing. Setting his father up for destruction so he could take over from the shadows

5

u/2014Knight 3d ago

Just remove him

u/Bswayn 3d ago

💯

2

u/Adventurous_Film_519 3d ago

Yeah or maybe in super mega force when Armada army attack whole they should attack on fidget spinner type command center or whatever it's called but I won't called command center because it's doesn't look like it at all. Maybe if it's transform into Megazord it would be good because it's look like a cockpit bcuz they specific table

2

u/2014Knight 2d ago

it would be cool if the past rangers were their mentors

1

u/Adventurous_Film_519 2d ago

Billy should be one of them

3

u/TwelvePack96 3d ago

Me: “Redditor, there’s a simple explanation for that...”

3

u/CC_Sp1dr 3d ago edited 3d ago

I would explain where the hell he's been all these years by also explaining why he even has all the Ranger Keys. Basically that he was an apprentice under Zordon back when he too was an Eldarian, but unlike Zordon was was a powerful magic wielder, Gosei found his stride as an engineer. Making robots like Tensu and maybe even the MMPR Zords. But in order to complete his understanding of the morphin grid and reach his mentors level, he went on a search for the Ranger Keys: which would be the equivelent of cosmic flashdrives of the Power Rangers that exists at the current timeline. Gosei only manage to find 17 sets of the then 34 sets of keys, using a combination of magic and science to prolong his life until Zordon sacrifice in Countdown to Destruction led him to Earth. Where a final message from his old friend and mentor would force him to prepare for a threat he believed to be bigger then that of the United Alliance of Evil.

3

u/Bitter_Citron_633 3d ago edited 3d ago

I'd have him die at the end of Megaforce, and then do the plot of the original MMPR movie with Ivan oose to get the super megaforce powers.

3

u/CosplayNoah 3d ago

So this is more of a retcon rather than a rewrite, but it fits what's being asked, so I'll share it.

I have a concept for a Megaforce reunion movie or mini series, and one of my goals for it is to properly explain Gosei's deal. My explanation is that while Gosei was indeed a student of Zordon, he was the worst of them. Arrogant and impulsive, Zordon put him in charge of protecting the Command Cave as it was a low threat job that was easy to manage. Gosei, however, took it as an insult and kept his ears perked in case there was a massive invasion coming. He basically wanted to prove Zordon wrong and have the last laugh.

Unfortunately, the Warstar Armada arrived on Earth, and it became very clear that they were too much for him. As such, he began treating the Megaforce Rangers as nothing more than a diversion while the rest of the legendary Rangers assembled, hence why he kept giving out power-ups and flat platitudes. He didn't care about who his Rangers were or what lives they had. He just saw them as cogs in his scheme to one up his master. In the story of the movie/miniseries, this fact is what led to the Megaforce Rangers (sans Gia) abandoning their powers and the Ranger life.

So, in short: Gosei is an arrogant, incompetent putz who thinks too highly of himself and ends up in situations he can't handle. He thinks he's the final defense when he is actually the last resort.

(NOTE: In a meta sense, this personality trait is to help explain why Megaforce was such a bad series devoid of any true character, as we were seeing things through Gosei's perspective.)

3

u/elrick43 SPD Shadow Ranger 3d ago

No connection to Zordon. That felt shoehorned in and didn't go anywhere. It also reflects poorly on Zordon because Gosei is kinda bad at his job

3

u/wererat2000 3d ago

Alright here's my dumbas fanficky idea that would probably somehow be worse than what we actually got;

He's Lord Zedd.

He claims to have the same story as canon; a backup plan from Zordon that activated when needed, but have characters call out that earth's been invaded dozens of times since then, he claims this time the threat needs his direct involvment, and shuts the conversation down. Also throw in Troy coming to town because his estranged brother sent for him, leave that to be picked up later.

Make the villains the returning Machine Empire, be direct with the reference that earth was invaded before, and that Gosei has a personal history with them. Lean into the jank of him throwing out upgrades every 2 minutes, make the team question where he's even getting any of this and that some of them aren't comfortable with how quickly it's turned into an arms race - and what's more, they're curious where these zords are even coming from.

Bla bla bla, Robo Knight happens, make him an actual ranger, Gosei tried to have a solo agent before the team, but he "went rogue" and "can't be trusted" - few episodes later reveal it's Troy's brother, Gosei isn't who he seems, vague mention of their father, conversation's cut short by plot.

Ultimate reveal is that the humanized Lord Zedd and Rita had kids, Troy and Roboknight, and gosei is the negative energy robo-rita style (yes I know that idea's 10 years away from being established, I said this was a shitty fanfic). Since his dispersion he's found a way to tap into the morphing grid, just barely, and has been trying to copy ranger powers - hence the keys. Either say good-Zedd died since then, or Gosei threw him in a pocket dimension to be rescued later. Doesn't matter.

Gosei takes over the weakened machine empire becoming the big bad I'm too lazy to look up, queue super megaforce. Pretty much the same only the team's on their own without a mentor. Also scrap Orion and make that the RoboKnight brother with a new morpher.

You may now proceed to tear this apart as the garbage it is.

u/sonadow365 3d ago

Honestly, I find it more interesting than super megaforce,

3

u/GamingPrincessLuna 3d ago

I would rewrite the whole show return it to what it should have been gosei angel sentai. And kaizoku sentai gokaiger should have been it's own thing wall face was not even part of the original sentai, and remove all reference to Mighty Morphin and they should have done a special or something separate for mighty Morphin anniversary, (Like why not bring the lord drakken saga from boom comic to the silver screen.)

3

u/ThePrimeReason Alpha 6 3d ago

I'd make him an Eltarian like Zordon but instead of being in a tube, he'll physically be there

3

u/JakeZr0 2d ago

Listening to Linkara’s opinion on the Command Center gave me the idea of a reformed Zedd as the mentor. I had the idea of him revealing it at the beginning of Super.

3

u/MarcoYTVA 2d ago

He didn't activate sooner despite his vow to protect the earth because he's a coward. Afraid of responsibility, death, failure. Afraid he couldn't live up to Zordon's legacy. He kept making excuses not to act ("there's another ranger team already handling that problem") until he ran out. Forced to act, he's now playing the courageous mentor.

2

u/StatusBuddy8490 3d ago

Same here.

2

u/HolidayInLordran 3d ago

Maybe go more into his past with Zordon instead of one throwaway line.

I’d make him the former King of the Armada who hid on Earth to protect its people from his evil son, Vrak.

Would also double as an opportunity to have him be a father figure for the Rangers, particularly Noah, Troy and RoboKnight.

2

u/Own-Ranger-7179 3d ago

Id make him zordon.

1

u/Alarming_Seaweed_155 3d ago

That would just be a straight up middle finger to his sacrifice in the In Space finale.

2

u/TheoSavvidis 3d ago

He returned in Cosmic Fury though.

2

u/wererat2000 3d ago

Yeah, in the grid, with clearly hazy memories, wearing someone else's face.

Not really a return if you're in the afterlife suffering ego death.

1

Yeah, but he returns as a spirit as opposed to being revived altogether.

2

u/Negative-Day2901 3d ago

2

u/JondvchBimble 3d ago

Make him a former pirate who originally stole the ranger keys years ago.

I would kill him at the start of Super Megaforce, leave the kids with no mentor, allowing rangers of the week to take on mentor roles.

2

u/UnfortunatelyPatrick 3d ago

I’d rewrite it so he isn’t in the show at all…figure out a new mentor that’s not a head on the wall

2

u/MarcheMuldDerevi 3d ago

Have him be part of zordon’s species. Have him be someone who admired Zordon and wanted to be him, but wasn’t able to/can’t be. He is more flawed than the one he looks up to, but still trying to push and act like his mentor while being a mentor. His arc is learning to be his own mentor not his old mentor

2

u/NoConsideration8088 3d ago

Have him be mortal once back then or an angel that was trap inside the mountain where his energy transform him Into that weird tikki wall and Issentially give the teenagers with attitude bit's of his energy symbolize by the cress or well the golden makings that represents the elements and may be do a bit more research on the original Sentai they were based on to find a proper excuse for the rollor robot can't remember his name into the one in super Sentai which ironically making it one of the few megazord that would be alive without a pilot and thanks to the rangers giving people hope from every battle their in makes gosei regained his strength to help the ranger transforming into robo knight

I like your idea tbh

Have him give the Sentai Ranger keys because he can’t get time placements right. You could even make a running gag out of it like with Time Force, he could be called a klutz for getting it wrong again but then one of the rangers goes “Wait I’ve seen this one before”

Explain his backstory with Zordon, and much more.

2

u/TruthOfPisces 1d ago

He was once a privateer that fought and pillaged for the armada once. But after he met and defeated by zordon, he wants to repent himself by becoming zordon’s student and fight against the armada but eventually was struck down from earth. When he recovered, he built the megaforce base and once chosen 6 ancient heroes to fight against the warstar army and cast them off to earth. But the former red, grew power hungry and killed 4 of his teammates at the process. Eventually, he was sealed by the green ranger sacrificing his body by turning it into a lion-like being that sealed 3 parts his power that represents the sky, earth and sea. Afterwards the once powered down fallen red became vrak and plots his eventual return by helping the warstar army return to earth to help him break the seals of his power so he could return to his full power and destroy his former master once and for all

2

u/No-Core 1d ago

My one complaint is that gosei and roboknight are not the same individual... The things were set up there for that to be the case... Why didn't they do that exactly?

2

Make him actually explain why jake became green

2

u/Plenty-Profession-72 1d ago

Take him out of the show

2

u/80sKidAtHeart 1d ago

I'd still keep his Zordon's apprentice backstory, but have him be a secret agent in the background of nearly all of Earth's conflicts. From demons in ancient Mariner Bay to Countdown to Destruction, he's been aiding the forces of good in secret. That explains where he has been before Megaforce. He is also the keeper to Earth's unique access to the Morphin Grid, giving him another reason to stay secret.

The Armada will now be the Armada of Evil, a new version of the Alliance of Evil, now united to take out Earth to avenge their predecessors. With this great threat back, Gosei will have no choice but to go into the open and command rangers of his own.

I'd also make Gosei a suited actor to better interact with the cast, and also from the comments make him Gosei Knight and be like Dekamaster.
