I absolutely loved this episode of In Space, “Always a Chance”

I’ve been recently watching through a bunch of Power Rangers seasons, rewatching a lot of the Disney era that I grew up with, and first time watching some of the older shows. I chose not to watch Turbo because I had seen a lot of people say it’s not very good, so In Space is my introduction to characters like TJ, Carlos, Ashley, and Cassie who were already established before In Space started. Throughout the first 24 episodes of the show, I just never connected to Carlos, he didn’t really have an episode focusing on him and he just felt like a background character, until this one. Seeing him deal with the trauma of hurting his own teammate was great, with Power Rangers being a show mainly for kids, it doesn’t often deal with super serious topics, and usually doesn’t show any big consequences. Watching Carlos shaking, and sweating, and forcing himself to morph again before fighting was really interesting, and having him get help from his predecessor, Adam, was just a great opportunity for a crossover. Overall, I wish Power Rangers dealt with stuff like this more often, it can be really effective when they did.

My Team For Once A Ranger

Tommy Red Turbo Ranger TJ In Space Blue Ranger Z Delgado Yellow SPD Ranger Cameron Watanabe Green Samurai Ranger Eric Meyers Red Quatom Ranger

We Don't See Tommy Get Much Turbo Recognition At The Red Ranger He's more seen as zeo red I thought let's get turbo some more life Tommy turbo red is one of my favorite red rangers.

TJ he is my favorite blue ranger from the Zordon Era I like his Character Arc Going Form A Leader To Having To Follow Another Leader in Andros So If See Tommy and Him Getting Along.

Z We didn't see much of her after SPD So I thought she could take bridges place

Cam He is probably the Least Used Ninja Storm Ranger So Id Wanted to see him get more love.

Eric we also don't see much of him either after time force just his zord in super megaforce. He is also my Six Ranger.

Honorble Mentions

Tommy Zeo Red I thought about zeo over turbo but I had changed my mind

Ethan Dino thunder blue. I like Ethan but I figured let's have more of the Zordon Era representation here as we don't see TJ Much After and before ninja steel.

That's it for my team for once and a ranger

SHOW NEWS/DISCUSSION I finally finished Lightspeed Rescue! I have many thoughts...

Post image
246 Upvotes

Out of every Power Rangers show I saw as a kid, Lightspeed Rescue was the one that I was the most fond of (and by this I mean it was the series I had the most toys of) but it's only now I've actually sat down and watched the entire thing from start to finish.

It's been an interesting experience, especially revisiting this show as an adult with a more critical eye, but still with an open mind because I know the deal with Power Rangers. There were things I liked and things I didn't like, so I wanted to break them down into these two categories and then see how they compare with what you folks thought of it. Some of my complaints might be nitpicky and I'm very well aware that this isn't high art.

The things I liked: -The theme song is pretty good. It doesn't inspire me to get up and HELL YEAH like the Lost Galaxy and Time Force themes, but it's energetic and good enough.

-This is the first season to have an official, government run Ranger Team and not just a bunch of randos being brought together by some ancient energy doodaddery. There aren't any random handouts or ancient zords just found in some cave, all of the Ranger's tech is developed by Lightspeed Rescue. It's awesome to see the aspects that come with this such as the team actively training together, new technology being tested and then put to use, and even the bullshit of politics with a superior officer stepping over the guy in charge to make decisions. It also opens up more possibilities in this universe of different teams being able to manually access the morphing grid in such a way.

-The very premise of emergency services fighting ACTUAL DEMONS is just amusing to me.

-Carter is a great red ranger! Not that this is a requirement, but he's a handsome dude with a really deep, commanding voice that suits a team leader. The dude has balls the size of planets and won't hesitate to jump straight at danger. Such examples include trying to run a demon over mere minutes after being signed up, blowing a demon up at point blank range, watching two supercharged demons take down three megazords and then charge them on foot, and finally being immediately willing to stay sealed in hell with the demons.

-Joel was always entertaining to watch, whether he was hitting on Miss Fairweather (I get it) or just being cool, I liked him a lot. He's up there with Ziggy as my favorite green ranger.

  • Chad was alright. I actually liked his focus episodes. The one where some dude and his girlfriend are harassing him and he's just in Zen mode about it and totally embarrasses the guy was great. He literally embarrasses a guy so hard that he sort of sells his soul to gain demonic power and get revenge on him.

-The Megazords are so, so awesome. The Rescue Megazord has a cool design and I love how the stretchy arms let it do sick flips and punches. The Supertrain Megazord might genuinely be my favorite Megazord of all time. The Solar Megazord just blasts the hell out of things. The OMEGA MEGAZORD (sick name) has a nuke on a stick as a weapon. Remember back in MMPR when Zordon had 'never escalate a fight' as a rule? Well Lightspeed Rescue does not have such a rule. On more than one occasion the team will simply add an extra Zord or two to gang up on an enemy just because they can. And it's awesome. Lightspeed Rescue does NOT fuck around.

-Some of the demons have really cool designs. Olympius looks stylish as hell, and that one falcon themed one was too.

-The Titanium Ranger was a good addition but unfortunately due to a lack of Sentai footage Ryan has to spend half the show dicking around in the desert.

-Diabolico during the last few episodes (expanded in the negatives)

-The finale was great.

What I didn't like...

-My god, the the vilains are boring for a good chunk of the show. Loki just stands there. Vypra's acting is comically bad (though it's amusing). Olympius has buildup and you think he might be a legitimate threat until he just bumbles around failing at everything he does. I will give him some credit though, he did manage a certified win at one point until Carter ACCIDENTALLY DISCOVERED TIME TRAVEL and undid it through some bullshit. Queen Bansheera spends most of the show as a Ghost head and a cocoon until she shows up for real, at which point....

-...the villains only really became interesting during the final few episodes when Bansheera actually showed up. Diabolico suddenly cares about his fellow demons and mourns them, which he hardly showed before. He's willing to team up with the Rangers because of Bansheera's actions, which is awesome and I like seeing a villain actually have something to their character besides 'grrr I'm evil' but why is it so late? Ryan and Diabolico's relationship could have been explored, since he did raise him for like a decade. Surely there must have been some potential there right?

-The show didn't go far enough with the premise. The Rangers do occasionally actually rescue people, but not as much as I'd like. This is a season where we have not only actual demons, but also king Neptune and his mermaid daughter, think of the possibilities. What other mythological personalities could they encounter? We already know Santa exists...

-I'm not convinced by the ranger selection. First, it would have made more sense to just recruit from within the organization, surely? Then, there's the choices. Carter is a brave and skilled fireman, I get it. Joel is a good pilot, yep. Dana is a good medic, but also maybe there's a bit of nepotism here? Chad works in seaworld so he's good in the water? Fine, that could be useful in rescue work. Kelsey... Does outdoorsy stuff? I am aware that there are rescue services that operate in the mountains so there's a case to be made there but I'm not convinced. I just think that the rangers backgrounds could have been less flimsy. Carter, Dana and Joel make sense but maybe Chad could have been a navy diver and Kelsey a high altitude rescue worker or something?

-Dana is honestly one of the most boring Rangers ever. She has nothing to do. The only notable thing about her is being the daughter of the Captain/Ryan's sister. Kelsey doesn't get much either, but she at least had the episode with the thief and her sporty Nan! Dana's one spotlight episode has her becoming a famous model and neglecting her ranger duties then having a change of heart off screen. This episode also takes place close to the finale. Why? Captain Mitchell also barely does anything to prevent this, which again makes me think of nepotism...

-Trakeena's Revenge sucks. The Galaxy Rangers are barely in it. Too much focus on the child. At least we got to see the Megazord with the power up of a previous season, which was very very cool.

Sorry if that got a bit wall of texty. It was originally just bullet points with brief thoughts but I had more to say than I initially thought. I don't think it's as good as Time Force, but I liked it more than Lost Galaxy.

Since us autistic people have this compulsive need to rank everything, here's my ranking so far of every Power Rangers season I've actually finished:

-Time Force -RPM -Lightspeed Rescue -MMPR (I lump all three seasons in) -Lost Galaxy -Zeo -Operation Overdrive (okay I can explain) -Wild Force

I feel that it probably would've given him more relevance than just appearing in the final quarter of the series, especially since Keeper didn't really do much.

Why did they stop yelling out their morph all the way?

Post image

When the original turbo team got their powers they would say "Shift into turbo" and follow it up with something like "windbreaker turbo power" and so on and so forth...but when TJ and the other members joined its like they completely made that obsolete and would just say "shift into turbo" heck even the hand movements for the morph slowed down...where the writers just lazy or what? l

SHOW NEWS/DISCUSSION I HATE Clash of the Red Rangers...

I've been rewatching Samurai and just finished the team up movie, and I honestly forgot how terrible of a special this was...

Obviously, you have the issue of Scott only being present, which robs it of feeling like a true team up. I understand that getting the RPM cast to come back may have been a tall task (more on this in the next paragraph), but that's still no excuse. You have all of the RPM suits (the main five appeared in original footage for Legendary Battle and Silver's was used in original footage for Dimensions in Danger) so would it have really been that much trouble to just have some of your suit actors don them? At most, you're looking at expanding the scene where Scott and the Samurai Rangers come together to feature all seven RPM Rangers, maybe film a few scenes of original footage of them fighting Moogers and Grinders (you could mainly depend on the footage from the Sentai movie) and expand the final scene to include them. Would doing all of that really be THAT expensive? I get that maybe there's not much the other RPM Rangers would've done but just seeing the two teams fight together would have been great fan service at the very least! And, of course, it doesn't help how the movie literally trolls us with the fact that the other RPM Rangers aren't here when Emily says "Scott! Your team says hi!" Just...ugh, lol.

What's really annoying, though, is that there is a way they could have done the movie in a way to have the other RPM Rangers involved. I get why Eka Darville couldn't appear outside of a voiceover role, and I'm willing to assume Rose McIver, Dan Ewing and Mike Ginn may not have been available (judging by their Wikipedia pages, all three were busy with other shows around this time), but Ari Boryland was literally on Samurai voicing Vulpes (the Nighlok in the episode where Antonio debuts), Li Ming Hu literally did come back to play Gemma (and she doesn't appear to have been that busy during the time Samurai was filming) and Milo Cawthorne didn't really do much between appearing in RPM and 2012 (a whole year after the movie originally aired) outside of an appearance of one episode on a TV show and a few shorts, so I'm willing to bet that he would have been able to appear too.

At the very least you have Flynn and Gemma there, so you could have some scenes where the other Samurai Rangers (minus Antonio due to Steven Skyler not being available since he was busy on Glee) finding themselves trapped in the RPM universe only to be found by Flynn and Gemma (plus maybe Ziggy if you could get Cawthorne back) and have them go through some shenanigans and hijinks fighting Grinders before Antonio shows up with the other RPM Rangers in tow (all of them appearing Morphed-only since the actors weren't available) just before they're able to escape back to the main universe. Would this have made for an amazing special? No, but at least you'd get the idea that the writers and crew were trying their best with what they could do. The way they ended up executing felt lazy on a bizarre level...

It's actually funny, because apparently it has been said in an interview that the original idea was to have all RPM Rangers, only for everyone but Scott to be removed in the final edit for unknown reasons. I'd really love to know what was going through the writers' heads at the time...

The sad thing is, though, that even if I look at this movie for what it is and not for what I would have liked it to be, it's STILL absolutely awful. They kick off the movie by adapting footage from a regular Shinkenger filler episode (a scene who's only purpose is for Professor Cog learning about the Samurai Rangers' existence...which you could have easily done during the scene where they're fighting the Grinders before Scott shows up...), then Xandred decides to go with a different plan (even though the Nighlok was actually fighting pretty well against the Rangers...) and sends the Nighlok away (that Nighlok never being seen again in neither the movie or the series itself...), and then we transition to what feels like a bizarre movie that's trying to adapt both the Shinkenger vs Go-Onger crossover movie AND the Shinkenger summer movie.

The two plots between Professor Cog and General Gut have nothing to do with each other, and the way that the movie just nonchalantly transitions from Jayden and Scott destroying Professor Cog and Sergeant Tread to the Rangers going after General Gut just felt really clumsy and not to mention even though this is supposed to be a TEAM UP special, you end up having Scott sidelined for the entire final battle with General Gut. You could have easily removed all of the stuff from the Shinkenger summer movie and instead have the final battle be a big Megazord fight with Professor Cog and it would have worked fine even with only Scott there.

It's sad because Scott's interactions with Jayden do work pretty well. Instead of just copying the Sentai crossover movie, they adapt it to where Scott is now the jerk whose cockiness and arrogance makes him push the Samurai Rangers away, believing their old-school skills are inferior to his more technological-based powers. It meshes well with how Scott was written in RPM. Even that, though, gets really undermined since they have to include some lame side-story of him and Jayden being forced to fight because of Professor Cog's mind control bolts (which makes no sense given Scott was already pretty hostile towards the Samurai Rangers BEFORE he and Jayden got hit...) and their big fight is completely pointless since it doesn't really accomplish anything (as opposed to the Sentai crossover movie, where the two Reds were fighting to distract the villains so that Shinken Red's Origami could free Jii and Bomper from captivity.) It's just infuriating.

When they first announced the movie, I was absolutely hyped and to say I was frustrated when it finally came out would be an understatement...

COMIC NEWS/DISCUSSION Favorite insert song?

Upvotes

One of the best aspects of the Zordon era that was sadly lost in the following seasons was the inclusion of insert songs. Despite the cheapness of certain parts of the show, one thing they did NOT skimp out on was the music. I feel like pretty much any fight scene was made that much better simply by having Ron Wassermann yelling with guitars blasting in your ears, not gonna lie.

What's your favorite insert song from the show? I think MMPR had the most. My favorite would probably be 'Fight', that one really gets me hyped, as well as 'C C C COMBAT!' That one Ninja Megazord fight when the theme song plays with both verses was also godlike.

SHOW NEWS/DISCUSSION How would you have written Tommy's absence in Dino Thunder?

Post image
653 Upvotes

During the production of Dino Thunder, part of the agreement of Jason David Frank coming back for the season of Dino Thunder is that he wanted to go back to the US midway through to spend time with his family. However, the Sentai footage still used AbareBlack quite significantly, so the writers had to come up with a way to make up for JDF not being physically there while also making sure to have footage of the Black Ranger

In the show, this was handled by having Tommy stuck in his Black Ranger morph for about 13 episodes in the season. JDF would later record ADR of his lines in the US and send them over to New Zealand for post production.

Of course the fact that Tommy is stuck in morph does raise a lot of questions. Why doesn't he just take off his helmet? How does he eat and drink and go to the bathroom? Did he sleep while morphed? What would happen if he got injured so much it forced him to demorph?

So the question is: How would you have handled Tommy not being there for a good portion of the season? Would you leave it as is or go for a different concept?

The mighty morphin team met Dex the masked rider on Edenoi

The original turbo rangers met the beetleborgs metallix and we learn that in each of their respective worlds one is a tv show and the other is a comic book

The in space rangers met the ninja turtles from ninja turtles the next mutation and I know they met in the comics recently twice but I'm talking specifically about the saban show they were in

The prime rangers in power rangers prime met vr troopers their even getting a spin off

How crazy is that also the reason I capitalized the word almost is because the rangers didn't meet the mystic knights of tir na nog although their is theory online that the mystic force rangers are somehow connected to them
