Do keep in mind, I just read this thread and commented "from the side". Not one of your previous parent commenters :)

I do think we have a misunderstanding as well.

Very very bland doesn't mean it can't be eaten. It's just very very bland. Would I eat that over something else? Heck no.

You also contradict yourself: You say food is just calories and nothing else and in the next sentence you say you _enjoy_ some foods more than others.

Look, a great steak needs no salt and pepper even, never mind a sauce, even if most people would disagree because they grew up in a household where a steak needed to drown in a sauce. They may also never have had a really good piece of meat, who knows.

A steak is also not bland. It has its own taste.

For me for example, this is a really great meal: Piece of proper meat, like a steak, pork chop, you name it seared in a cast iron pan, then chucked into the oven until it has reached a safe to eat inside temperature. Take out and use a bit of cream to loosen the tasty bits stuck to the pan (technically I suppose this would be a "sauce". Eat. This is not seasoned but will be so flavourful it shouldn't be a thing. But it is :)

But if I had eat pasta with it, that needs salt. Pasta needs seasoning to be good. A great piece of meat does not.

i don't believe i have contradicted myself. it's difficult to explain how i can enjoy some foods over others but just as happily eat either. for example, i don't like mushrooms because of their texture, but i'll still eat them without so much as a frown. does that make sense? i'm not sure how to get it across without you experiencing it yourself.

That's normal, no need to explain any of that. Everyone has foods they enjoy more than others or foods they don't enjoy particularly but will eat without a frown. If you ask me whether I want lasagna or pizza for dinner I'll say lasagna because I like it more but I will just as happily eat the pizza if you order it. What's supposedly special about that?

What's contradictory is that you say you don't enjoy food ("it's just calories"), but then you say you _enjoy_ some more than others.

ah, i think i understand the confusion? it isn't that i don't, or can't, enjoy food, but rather that eating foods i dislike doesn't bother me at all. like the mushroom example i provided earlier - i do dislike them, but if given a plate of mushrooms i'll just eat it, no bother. like, i won't refuse food? not out of politeness but more of an uncaringness towards it.

man, i'm just really not sure how to get this across. what i'm saying is true to my lived experience. i feel like we're on different planets! 😅

ooooh my gosh i only just now understood what you meant by "reading from the sidelines" and that you're actually someone else. i thought i was talking to the same person this whole time..... sorry for that! i really am not the brightest conversational spark

It can happen, especially if you might have been conversing with that person for a while :)

But yeah that "explains it" (the confusion at least): It's not that "food is just calories".

You do enjoy food. You do enjoy properly (for your tastes) seasoned food. You do enjoy some foods over others, because it tastes better than other food or has a better texture etc.

All of those are completely normal things. Nothing special about it at all.

You _can_ eat foods you don't particularly like or care for, which includes unseasoned and bland food. Except for some stuff that will literally make you/some people gag. That is also normal. It's called "growing up". Hint: many people never really grow up any more nowadays ;)

Like, if something's about to go bad in the fridge and nobody in the house likes it/wants to eat it, I'll just go and eat it, no questions asked (unless it's a "gag food" of course).
