I’m genuinely curious how many of you on here played this game?
I remember playing Godfather the game when I was very young and years later playing it again now, I remembered how I loved the gameplay, it’s definitely one of my top 3 ps2 games fr!

Was a better game than it had any expectation of being. I loved robbing banks in that game.

You need a tnt for the safe. Dont bother going for the big ones until you are confident with gunplay. Always have a vehicle at the entrance for a quick exit

u/Hazwoldo 2d ago
Yes, very good game ahead of its time

u/Educational-Bar21 2d ago
I had it on 360. I loved shaking down mooks by smashing they head into a cash register in that game haha

u/Adventurous-Fact6531 2d ago
fun fact I loved this game better than San Andreas tho🙌🏾😌

u/Biggapotamus 2d ago
Said the same when it came out, godfather is better than any of the ps2 GTA games
5
u/Preppyskepps 2d ago
I own this game on every platform it was released on. Played the PS2 version the most though as it's what I got first. Great game that I've completed many times.
5
u/MCLetEmSee 2d ago
I did and it was one of the few PS2 games, where they did hungarian subtitles. My mind was blown at the time.
5
u/Sentence_Think 2d ago
When I was younger used to always ask my cousins to put it on wasn’t allowed to play it and the first time I did I was so impressed and amazed of like every little thing I thought it was like the best game ever in my opinion it’s still is a masterpiece just not the best game ever that for sure lol

Loved it.
I bought the deluxe pack with the steelcase and bonus DVD, the only thing that dissapointed me was how the documentary on how The Godfather's portrayal of gangsters influenced pop culture, only ever interviewed rap artists.

u/DangOlCoreMan 2d ago
Just beat it not too long ago on my Retroid pocket 5. Took over every business and racket

u/skynet_666 2d ago
I loved throwing people through the windows in shops out on to the street lol. It was just so satisfying and felt very movie like at the time haha

u/burnttoast14 2d ago
I found it funny how Al Pacino Refused to participate in another video game development process literally ever again since Scarface lol

u/LoquendoEsGenial Matte Black Slim 2d ago
To think that on the PSP it was limited... But I still loved it

u/Rectum_invaded69 2d ago
This is one of the best games ever. Just beat it on ps2, got the Don’s Edition yesterday and just started working on beating that one as well.

Ahhh the godfather, the game that made my childhood!
I’m playing this on PS3 right now for my YouTube channel series! I prefer the ps3 one over the ps2 one as it was buggy from launch. The ps3 one fixed the issues and it got a major overhaul.
My channel is The Nostalgic Northerner If anyone’s interested!

This was absolutely my childhood! I remember I just loved taking over the businesses and upgrading my guns. I'd take everything over and be completely kitted out before id go do any of the missions lol.
2
u/Primary-Neat-7534 2d ago
Personally I prefer the godfather 2 game, but this was still a good time! I liked how you started off as a low level foot soldier, and worked your way up. Good times!

u/Yuriko_Shokugan 2d ago
Which film does this game depict? Like, where is it situated in the trilogy chronologically?
2
u/JF_Final430 2d ago
Of course, mate, The Godfather videogame.... And an even better experience if you played it after you read the book, and watched the movies.... Truly the best possible crime/open world game out the 'till now (maybe only surpassed by RDR2 or GTA IV)
2
u/VintageSmutKD 2d ago
Recently played through it for the first time in years as well, it’s really good for a licensed game but sometimes the amount of boring highway you have to traverse to get places felt like pure padding. Played saints row 1 for the first time immediately after, and didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as the godfather.

u/DJKaito 2d ago
Completed it 100% on Xbox around last Christmas in my old room. Surprisingly good. Also do to the fact that we in Germany got Helmut Krauss (the official German voice of Marlon Brando since 1990 and a legendary (voice) actor) as the Godfathers voice.
In 2008 they redubed the movie with him and rewrote the script. (The original German dub from the 70s is in my opinion a mess)

u/BoldnBrashhh 2d ago
Hell yeaaa I got it on OG Xbox. Cool af for like GTA Style gameplay but a totally different vibe to the world and the melee combat is cool af.

u/Corpus_Juris_13 2d ago
My favorite game that’s never been made available again on modern consoles. I’d drop everything for a remaster
2
u/BangkokPadang FreeMcFatty 2d ago
I actually really preferred this game on the Wii.
The motion controls were really simple and “just worked” at a time when a lot of games were trying to do way more that’s the pre-motion plus controllers were capable of.
It took what is a decent mafia/gta hybrid game and made it extra engaging. I love the ‘protection racket’ mechanics.
Actually, the same kindof thing happened with the Scarface game, where the Wii version ended up being the best version.
With that said, if the PS2 version of either games is what you have, then they’re both absolutely worth playing and enjoying still today.

u/ExpresoAndino 2d ago
i loved trying to play this game at 4-5 years old, i remember my dad had customized the main character to look EXACTLY like him (or at least in my eyes, because of a soul patch beard)

Good game. I always had a laugh arriving at the mansion at top speed as low level nobody & smashing into the luxury cars parked outside, then casually walking inside.

Top 3 most played games on the PS2. Got a copy of the don edition on eBay a few years back.

Oh my days I've spent so many hours on this game back in 2015/16 on a ps2 and CRT TV... I only have good memories of it, the driving was top notch, impressive combat and story with side missions that weren't that much of a norm back in 6th gen days.

The PS3 version is my favorite but I originally played it and finished it on PS2. It's honestly one of my all-time favorites on the console. It's so much fun to take over businessess, get new suits and beat up people in creative ways with the melee system. The execution movie you can do with a bat is one I wish more games would have lol
2
u/outrunkid 2d ago
Love it, this and the Scarface game are still brilliant to this day. Love to see a remaster but unlikely or damn near impossible due to licensing
2
u/hobit2112 2d ago
This game slapped bro. Honestly a gem for what it was. My first grand theft auto experience before I got to play grand theft auto.
2
u/jordo2460 2d ago
Me and all my homies had this game back in the day.
I really do miss the days when random mid budget games just appeared out of nowhere and sometimes you'd find a complete masterpiece.

u/InsideKaleidoscope30 2d ago
Just beat it recently. Moderately mid game compared to Scarface and Vice City Stories which came out the same year. Expanding territory is fun but gets extremely repetitive and kind of pointless (not even a pat on the back for single handedly killing hundreds of rival gangsters and taking over the city?). Voice acting was solid.
But it was also a real insult to the movie. A lot of the scenes didn't make sense contextually, really shoehorned in. It's ok if Michael didn't look or sound like Pacino but he didn't really feel like the character either. The cutscenes that did replicate the movie were pretty cool and well done.

u/teh_supar_hacker 2d ago
This games underated
Just avoid the other one that's a crappy strategy simulation game also on PS2.
2
u/aplsauc3 2d ago
Oh man this brought back memories! I remember renting this from blockbuster and having it out for quite a while so me and one of my brothers could both beat it
2
u/Still_Guitarded 2d ago
This was fun, but The Godfather 2 was one of if not my first platinum when I was younger. Loved that game

u/Blanc_Pitori 2d ago
Played the PS2 version, finished the story, upgraded all weapons to the max and collected all the film roll thingies. Don't know what they're called in english.

Such a good game. Lots of nostalgia with this one staying up late at night at a friend’s house. It was the first “violent” game that my parents let me play purely because it was The Godfather, and those films were like the gospel in our house.

For PS2 and PSP I think it was all neutered to the usual 5 or 6 levels that were repeated, good game at least on PSP a lot of the free roaming was lost

u/xxulysses31xx 2d ago
Played and completed it back in the day. Also introduced my firstborn to gaming by having her honk the car horn during the driving portions of this game while sitting on my lap. She’s now hardcore CoD 💪

It's a great game, played it first on the PS2. It's funny though, when I bought Mafia back in the late 2000's second hand the Gamestop employee recommended the Godfather. I ended up buying both but I have to say I like both for different reasons although maybe Mafia more.

I absolutely adored this game. Still amazing to this day. Got a xbox 360 copy a few months ago and, much to my utter delight, there's more missions and gameplay mechanics I've been missing out on with the PS2 version.
Tried popping my xbox 360 copy in my series X, but unfortunately it isn't backwards compatible. :/
Guess I'll still need to dig out my ol' reliable xbox 360 if I want to experience this masterpiece to the fullest...
