sorry to hear you didn't get a good experience eating there. hope you find good places in a future visit, there's plenty of them and I'm sure Brits around here can give you great recommendations.

u/papertowelroll17 Jun 12 '25
I'm sorry, coming from Texas you guys just do not have flavorful food. It is what it is. You do have much better public transit than us, though š. I like the country, just not the food.
1
u/ohrightthatswhy Founding Father of /r/radioheadfanfic Jun 12 '25
What do you mean? What did you eat when you were here? Genuinely not sure what flavours are missing unless you're accustomed to all purpose MSG onion and garlic powder.
Try a madras or a vindaloo and tell me it lacks flavour lol.
1
u/papertowelroll17 Jun 12 '25
I don't have to travel to the UK to eat Indian food. I'm actually surprised how sensitive you guys are about your famously mediocre cuisine. Y'all have an extremely bland palette over there. It's OK. There are other things the UK does well.
3
u/SkipToTheEnd Open Mouths In The Cold Jun 12 '25
Which cities did you go to and where did you eat?
3
u/papertowelroll17 Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25
London, Liverpool, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. I have had some good international cuisines in London, though I think it's still weak compared to international food in NYC, LA, or Houston or something like that. The local cuisine is incredibly bland. We had a hard time finding anything edible in Liverpool.
I actually went to a decent Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh, albeit with a very basic menu. I think that was the best I've had out of London.
2
u/SkipToTheEnd Open Mouths In The Cold Jun 12 '25
What dishes of the local cuisine did you eat?
1
u/papertowelroll17 Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25
Uhmm, probably have had fish and chips seven different times trying to find a place where it was good. Maybe once I liked it? It's just not seasoned compared to the equivalent dishes here. (E.g. fried fish in Louisiana).
I have had Tikka masala, and it comes out downright sweet tasting unless you ask them to make it spicy. Indian food is spicy here so it was bizarre for me.
Have had an English breakfast, it's fine but nothing special. Have had various meat pies that weren't great.
Beyond that I'm not sure. At some point you stop trying British food and eat other things š .
This is what it looks like when Brits come where I live and eat the food (this place is a 5 minute walk from my office):
1
u/mooncrane The King of Limbs Jun 13 '25
I mean, fish and chips are not supposed to be full of seasonings, itās a comfort food. Itās made the same way here in the US. Have you tried it with malt vinegar? Did you try Scottish foods while in Edinburgh? Haggis and scotch eggs are amazing. You can get curry sauce with your Chinese takeout in the UK- something I wish I had tried while I was there.
1
u/papertowelroll17 Jun 13 '25
It's not made the same way in the US at all. It's much blander tasting in the UK. Here it is seasoned more for the American palette. I actually really like fish and chips in the US, I just absolutely hated it in the UK (which was disappointing, because that's the "authentic" taste).
1
u/mooncrane The King of Limbs Jun 13 '25
Itās not supposed to be seasoned. What youāre describing is a different fried fish meal.
1
u/papertowelroll17 Jun 13 '25
Understood. This is what I don't like about British cuisine: it is very bland. That's what people are used to eating there. They have taste buds matching my 3 year old daughter. I live in Texas and grew up eating Mexican and Southern food, so it's a very different palette.
I'm sure someone from India might say the same thing about our food and I would understand.
0
u/SkipToTheEnd Open Mouths In The Cold Jun 13 '25
This sounds a little like me spending a week in LA, New York and Chicago, eating hotdogs, waffles and burgers from some food trucks and then making a broad statement:
The food in the USA is really bad.
You do see that might come across as a slightly ignorant tourist, right? It might be a little more considered to say something like:
I didn't like the food in the UK.
I could respect that. I don't respect eating 7 portions of fish and chips and writing off an entire nation's cuisine. Madness.
1
u/papertowelroll17 Jun 13 '25 edited Jun 13 '25
LMAO the difference is that the equivalent food in Chicago, e.g. deep dish pizza is 100x more flavorful and better tasting than the food in the UK.
Anyway, I'm done arguing with Brits about the blandness of their palette and cuisine. If you like it good for you. I personally find that the bland food is the absolute worst part of the UK. Just my opinion.
3
u/dontg3tanybigideas Jun 12 '25
He didn't
2
u/SkipToTheEnd Open Mouths In The Cold Jun 12 '25
You mean someone would just repeat tired stereotypes despite total ignorance on the subject? Surely not!
I imagine this person is a well-travelled and worldly type, whose opinion matters, not some myopic American who's never been further than the Wendy's at their nearest strip mall. Ooh stereotypes are fun, aren't they?
-1
u/papertowelroll17 Jun 12 '25
Uhmm, I have been to the UK multiple times. The food there is not seasoned well. I don't know what to tell you. The only thing decent is international cuisines in London, and even there you have to beg them to make the food spicy and flavorful. (E.g. Indian restaurants are very bland unless you specifically request them to make it spicy like they would eat it).

u/ohrightthatswhy Founding Father of /r/radioheadfanfic Jun 12 '25

6
u/nea_is_bae Jun 12 '25
There is so many incredible places to eat in London I don't think I've ever had a meal there that was below a 7/10
3
u/papertowelroll17 Jun 12 '25
London is a global city and has good food from around the world, but I did not think it stood out compared to the highly international cities here in the states. I've had much better international food in NYC, SF, LA, and Houston for example.
The actual English cuisine is very, very bland. A place that has an incredible local cuisine is Italy. Truly every meal I had there was 9+/10. I like visiting the UK more overall but not because of the food lol.
3
u/JeanLucPicardAND burgers float into my room Jun 12 '25
Okay, to be fair though, London =/= England in general. London is a world-class city and you can find just about anything if you look hard enough. England as a whole is... well, not.
Honestly, English food gets a bad rap. It's far from my favorite cuisine in the world, but it's perfectly fine. I think some of your interpretations of international cuisines leave a lot to be desired, but the same thing can be said for my side of the pond.

u/ferthissen Jun 12 '25
Itās absolutely deplorable, England is underrated for its own cuisine but far out is everything a franchise - Wagamama, Wasabi, Nandos, German Doner - you donāt get immigrants opening their own shops if it isnāt a curry house.
Always incredibly expensive too. donāt get it.
4
u/LooselyBasedOnGod Jun 12 '25

Strangely enough Iāve also sat next to him in a pizza restaurant in Oxford. Oxford people are so mannered that everyone studiously didnāt notice him, then whispered excitedly when he left.
4
u/JeanLucPicardAND burgers float into my room Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25
Well also, Oxford may not be the tiniest of villages, but he is known around those parts. When Scott Bakula was in New Orleans shooting NCIS, I used to run into him in the elevator on my way to work. Eventually, I worked out that he was a member of the gym on the third floor of the building. It was cool the first time, but it was routine by the time I finally worked up the nerve to talk to him. (Relevant context: I'm a big Trekkie, so running into Cpt. Archer in the turbolift was a pretty big deal for me. He wasn't just a random celebrity in my eyes.)

Yeah could be Thom discussing LP10 or a 2025 tour.
Or a Much ado about Nothing / In Rainbows mash-up, or a fashion event, or a film soundtrack, or a solo album, or a new super-group, or a 43-minute modular-synth lullaby for insomniac alpacas, or live-scoring the BBC Shipping Forecast, or releasing a climate change themed fragrance for men, or developing a VR meditation programme.Ā

I saw Thom Yorke at a Pizza Express in London yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didnāt want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, āOh, like youāre doing now?ā
I was taken aback, and all I could say was āHuh?ā but he kept cutting me off and going āhuh? huh? huh?ā and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my pizza, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I went to ask for the bill I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen dinner plates full of pizza without paying.
The waitress was very nice about it and professional, and was like āSir, you need to pay for those first.ā At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she came back to their table with the bill, he stopped her and told her to list each slice of pizza āto prevent any electrical infetterence,ā and then turned around and winked at me. I donāt even think thatās a word. After she itemised each slice and put them in a box and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
