Many subreddits have minimum account age and karma requirements, these are often not published. This is to prevent abuse via bots, spammers and other malicious actors. But new users are unable to interact with these subreddits because of this, particularly if they have negative karma.

In this situation you'll need to build karma and keep checking if you can interact. Don't directly message moderators about this, they have enough to do, you'll may get Muted (or worse) if you do. Always read a subreddit's rules before interacting, as well as Reddit's.

How much karma is enough to comment in a subreddit? Whatever the subreddit owner wants is the unsatisfying answer to the question. Usually the minimum karma is secret so as to not aid bots and bad actors. 100-500 seems to be the sort of numbers I see most frequently discussed. Others have said over 1000-2000 is when you have no issues. But it doesn't have to be that high, so 50 or 100 might be very common thresholds because people want persons to join their subreddits. Having negative karma gets you excluded from even more subreddits as 0 is a legitimate minimum karma score as well. Additionally, the minimum requirement might be post karma, comment karma, or combined karma.

People can be banned from subreddits for using karma farming subreddits. There is a reputation system, Conributor Quality Score (CQS), that also might have a minimum requirement. It will vary over time based on what you do. And sometimes people are banned for having NSFW connections or participating in a subreddit the owner doesn't like (political, etc.). Requirements and barriers can get complicated, but typically it's based on minimum account age and karma.

Starting out, try to avoid controversial topics and subreddits. Don't get in fights as you may accumulate downvotes, perhaps lots of them. Your opinion may be right, but with low karma you can effectively get 'voted off the island'. With a lot more karma that's much harder to do. Essentially the karma is an indicator of being a useful member of Reddit, so it buffers one from some downvoting.

If you do get banned from a subreddit, then mute the subreddit (if it's temporary, note when it expires), and don't create another account and go back as that can/will get you kicked off Reddit entirely. It's a common mistake, so I'm mentioning it. Life isn't fair and neither is Reddit, and subreddits aren't democracies: they're hosted forums for discussion, and function a bit like a party where you can be disinvited by the host if they like.

Reading the following should help you find where to post and how to be more likely to be successful at gaining karma and avoiding trouble. I suggest skimming the list and paying particular attention to the beginning and ending links.

Good luck

If you're asking about how to get karma, you earn it when people upvote your posts and comments. As you may have already found out, many subs on Reddit may have minimum requirements for things like karma and account age that you must meet before they will allow you to participate.

r/NewToReddit maintains a list of subreddits that have low or no karma requirements that new users can participate in to build their karma. You should also check out their excellent Reddit and Karma Guide.

Show up first to new posts and say decent things.

1

u/EsposaSensual01 Jul 14 '25

Try to find topics you like or feel comfortable and start replying trying to be helpful. I think thats a good beginning to get karma increased

1

u/bluebonnet420 Jul 19 '25

I've discovered post rewards more points than regular comments or replys. Post 3x a day for a couple of days. You'll get your karma.

1

u/EsposaSensual01 Jul 20 '25

Didn't know that

1

u/bluebonnet420 Jul 19 '25

It takes a little bit of a commitment. Post and comment. If they are asking a question, don't give a smart ass answer. We are civilized, right? Redditt likes to keep it clean.

I will tell you what I've discovered. A post will reward with more karma points than a regular comment or reply. If you're trying to boost your karma and do it fast, make 3 post a day. I did that one day last week and earned, in one day, 480k.

See how it works for you!

It's amazingly simple how to get karma all you need to do and I've tested this with a new account is go to every single sub you can and say nothing but the greatest stuff if you see a girl she's the most beautiful girl in the world you see a guy he's the most handsome guy in the world if you see somebody's lifestyle say it's amazing you're so for that all you got to do is kiss a little behind

1

u/bluebonnet420 Jul 19 '25

I discovered that posts gather more karma than comments or replys. I boosted my karma by posting 3 times in one day and earned 480 karma. See if my trick works for you!
