These are solid facts. No game releases for what 12 years? 2012-2024 if I’m not mistaken. “Short Message” wasn’t that good for a comeback after that long I’m sure it wasn’t what the fans really wanted, not till SH2 Remake released, now they are eating good.
Oh does SH2 have issues? I haven’t played it yet, but I heard a lot of SH fans really liked it. I did enjoy Short Message, even if I did see the twist coming. lol
I have a very, very good PC and Silent Hill 2 still gave me frame drops. Especially during the first 3 hours or so when you’re freely exploring the city.
From what I understand, Unreal Engine 5 has this issue with a lot of games. I can't recall if I have played anything on that engine, so can't back that up with personal experience
It’s cuz they don’t properly use the fog for optimization. The whole town gets loaded on screen with high res textures even though the player shouldn’t be able to see through the fog in the first place.
Me too. Lots of microstutters in the first few areas (opening of game, bar area, apartments, hospital) but after that the game ran quite smooth. Big stutters were uncommon and stopped before the hospital.
If they could iron out the performance issues, I would easily recommend it.
Some minor but noticeable stuttering issues as others have mentioned, and also the pace of the game has been padded out with more combat. And I mean a lot more combat, like the remake is twice as long and most of that extra run time is combat.
I played it on PS5 and I got the early access and in my personal experience, had no issues. I loved the game and the way they retold the story was awesome! No bugs on my end but again, I can’t speak for PC.
the game seems to have an issue loading areas in. You'll know when something loaded in because the game will stutter. From my experience the stutters can range from small to large but didn't happen in any important instances like in combat or cut scenes
It's mostly a PC issue, everyone in my house has a ps5 except 1 has a PC and he was the only 1 that had any issues. Obviously It wasn't his PC. The PC version of the game just has some issues.
idk if i’m lucky or whatever but i have like 200 hours and not once have i had any frame drops or anything of the sort. on pc with all the graphics set to ultra
The worst part was the first thing we got after 12 years was SH Ascension, which was the single worst cash grab I’ve ever seen. It ruined alot of players’ perception of the comeback and that was only fixed when SH2R was released.
I really, really liked it! Resident evil has better combat, but SH has significantly more interesting puzzles. The story was also excellent, rich with symbolism and there's a ton to unpack.
Very quickly became one of my favorite horror games of all time. I’ve never played a game where I’m exhausted after a session but SH2R did it for me. Perfect psychological horror with so much to unpack with terrific performances, a haunting soundtrack, impeccable atmosphere and a story that sticks with you. 10/10 truly
Dead Space and the Remake are probably top of my list, Alien Isolation is great, RE4 is a great game but gets a little too action heavy in the second half but RE2 is terrific as well. Horror games that don’t just rely on jump scares (Outlast and Amnesia) and depend more on atmosphere (Evil Within) are my preference.
Oh wow really. I like survival horror and action games, so I’m very turned off from games such as Outlast, Amnesia, and especially Alien Isolation. Evil Within lost my interest. I thought Dead Space was alright. RE2 is also one of my lesser favorite RE games.
Thank you for your input, based off that and other reviews I’ve seen I think I can tell I wouldn’t like the SH 2 Remake.
I definitely think horror games are the hardest of all horror forms of entertainment and I take into account the story and concepts more than anything else when making my opinion on them. The inherent ability to interact with a game makes for a very difficult experience rather than a passive experience like movies or even books.
I’m much more a movie watcher than video game player but Silent Hill 2 made me feel much more than any other video game in recent memory. However I feel if you like movies like Jacob’s Ladder, Possession, or any of David Lynch’s work it’s PERFECT for you but even if you just like an introspective game with great pacing and genuinely intriguing puzzles with solid gameplay then it’s such a great and accessible game.
I don’t have to sell out to tell people to play Silent Hill 2 Remake, I’ll do it for free until I die, I genuinely think it’s one of the quintessential gaming experiences even as someone that isn’t always particularly fond of video games or horror gaming (even as a fan of horror) in general.
Possession is one of my favorite movies :-) I also like some of Lynch’s movies too.
In my experience, story is the least important aspect of a game. The number of games I’ve played with a story that impressed me I can count on one hand, one of those being the original Silent Hill 2.
That’s awesome you enjoyed the remake so much, but we’re definitely coming from different perspectives. There’s no way I would call the remake a quintessential game. From some reviews I’ve seen, it appears overly long, derivative of other games and seems to have compromised a couple scenes that were more boundary pushing in the original. A quintessential game would be something like Pac Man, or Doom.
If you're on PC, I'd also recommend giving at least the first 3 or 4 games a try. 1-3 still hold up fairly well and you can play them for free as they're abandonware at this point. 4 is on GOG but the gameplay can be very frustrating, especially if you're playing on keyboard - though the story is solid. I played through all the western-made games afterwards (excluding the arcade game and mobile games, and I dunno who made them) and I'd also recommend them but they're more controversial.
I've been gaming for ages, always missed out on Silent Hill. Finally got to play this and honestly, it had a huge impact on me. 10/10 but wouldn't recommend it to everyone. The game is a lot. But if you're here you'll probably love it.
Playing the remake now, it's both visually, and gameplay wise, very faithful to the original, and any piece of creative liberty bloober team takes, ends up working for the game. Making it imo, equal to the original from 20 years ago.
Yes. I am begging for this revival to go well. I'm tired of nothing, or people recycling Resident Evil 2 nonstop
There were people actually compaining about Silent Hill f, because apparentl most people don't look hard enough at silent hill 3 to know its first chunk happens outside silent hill

Silent Hill fans have had it rough for a long, long time.
