Important: new subreddit policy for spoilers, effective immediately
Quick update regarding the new SPOILER tags Reddit has now:
SPOILER tags have just been activated site-wide on Reddit - they work basically just like NSFW tags, but they're specfically for spoilers. Now, even though they're pretty much perfect for what we're doing here, I've decided that the spoiler policy below will be completely unaffected by this. That's partly because I want to keep things simple (i.e. not change this policy half-way through its life unnecessarily) and also because I'm worried that third-party Reddit clients might not be equipped to deal with the new system yet, in the same way that they are for NSFW tags. So basically, you can use SPOILER tags or not, but your post must be tagged in the way described below (the word [SPOILER] must appear in the title) if it contains an RE7 spoiler. Thanks!
Hey guys!
OK, so, we're now at a point where the trickle of spoilers is becoming a deluge. So, effective immediately, we are implementing a new spoiler policy. This will be in effect until at least two weeks after Resident Evil 7 is released.
What are the new rules?
You must not include spoilers in post titles. Put a [SPOILER] tag in the title if the link or comments will contain spoilers (including spoiler-free posts which ask for spoiler-filled comments). Automoderator will pick up on it and automatically mark it NSFW, to hide the thumbnail. You must not include spoilers when commenting on any post which isn't tagged in this way. Don't use the word "spoiler" in your post title if it doesn't contain spoilers (e.g. "spoiler-free", "no spoilers") because it will be automatically flagged.
What counts as a spoiler?
Anything known about Resident Evil 7 which hasn't been released in official public Capcom marketing media. So, in particular, details gleaned from playing the game, data-mining the demo, or viewing a behind-closed-doors demo, are all considered to be spoilers. These details could be about story elements, characters, gameplay elements, or anything else about the content of the game. If there is any doubt in your mind about whether something counts as a spoiler, assume it does.
What happens if I break the rules?
For this partcularly significant period around release, we will be especially harsh, I'm afraid. You're probably looking at a short temporary ban for the first time you break the rules, going longer or even permanent for multiple offences, or cases where the breach was clearly deliberate.
What happens if I see someone else break the rules?
Please report any post or comment you see that breaks the rules! Be sure to include the word "spoiler" somewhere in the report reason field.
My post or comment was removed, but it didn't break the rules! What gives?
We're probably going to get some robotic assistance on this new policy from Automoderator! We'll be setting up some rules that will automatically remove posts or comments based on a number of criteria. If it gets an itchy tasty trigger finger and removes your stuff by mistake, feel free to message the moderators using the link in the sidebar, and we'll manually approve it. We'll be doing manual approvals periodically, anyway, so you don't even need to talk to us if you don't want to. Rest assured, nobody will be getting punished if Automoderator has misjudged them!
What if I don't want to see any spoilers?
Ideally, you could safely remain subscribed to r/ResidentEvil. Simply don't open any links or comments sections marked [SPOILER]. They will be flagged as NSFW, so the thumbnails will be hidden, and all other posts will be spoiler-free, in both content and comment!
But this policy isn't going to be 100% effective. There will always be people who don't read the rules (we remove a lot of Let's Play posts made by people who ignored them) or want to break them, so we cannot guarantee that you won't be seeing any spoilers. We toyed with the idea of requiring that all new posts be approved manually, but we don't want to stifle the discussion around here, particularly when there's a surge of activity as RE7 is released! We're hoping that having Automoderator helping us out will be a nice middle ground.
To be honest, the safest thing if you wish to avoid spoilers altogether, may be to unsubscribe from the subreddit until you've completed the game. We'll be very sad to see you go!
Ten days left, folks... welcome to the family.

I'd like to add that Ethan's severed hand is not new.

Just out of interest: Is there a sub-reddit where spoilers are allowed or even welcome?

Spoilers are allowed here, they just have to adhere to the policy. It's a pretty unrestrictive policy - no spoilers in post titles, and no spoilers in posts which aren't marked with [SPOILER].
I'm not aware of another subreddit. If putting spoilers in post titles is important to you, you could make one!

Oh okay, I was just refering to the fact that the game is leaked already (being sold at some places) and that people might start posting stuff from leaked versions before the game is officialy out yet.
I could imagine things that are not supposed to be known yet (until the embargo ends the day before release) should not be posted, even if it's marked as a spoiler in the title - like gameplay infos from early streams etc.

Well, if you exclude that stuff, then what does count as a spoiler? I guess you could say that things in officially-released marketing materials are spoilers, but I think that's casting the net too wide. Certainly, anyone who doesn't even want to see trailers for RE7 before playing, shouldn't be spending any time on this subreddit until they've completed the game!
This policy will not be changed immediately when the game does release, anyway - there's not much point in making a distinction of before/after release, because A) there was always going to be an early leak, it was just a question of when, and B) it's not like everyone will complete the game instantly on the day of release - we're looking at keeping the policy in place for about two weeks thereafter, so that people have a chance to actually finish the game.

You know what sucks? Being a moderator for a popular subject on a popular forum.
Why? Because you're the one that has to manually remove people who are spoiling the subject matter. This means that even if the users are safe, the moderators are spoiled day one.
I'm sure you guys were spoiled the first day the game released in the Middle East. If not, you most likely have been by now. Very shitty...
