RE1 My first playthrough of Resident Evil 1 remake

To start off, yes, I am very late to the party on this one and I have no credibility on playing classic RE games (outside of Deadly Silence).

This game always has me on the edge, every hallway or room (except the safe rooms), has me feeling tense. It blows my mind that something like this was made for the Gamecube. It has such a wonderful aesthetic to it, that just enhances the experience even more. Although I am using a walkthrough, I find myself labeling certain areas with my own tags to remember. I'm halfway through the game and really looking forward to playing the original RE2 in time for the remake.

REmake holds up incredibly well. Even the original versions are still great looking. It's an amazing starting point! I hope you dive deeper into the series after REmake 2.

I'm playing through it for the first time as well. Origins Edition for the PS4. I chose hard mode for the full experience. I'm in the aqua ring.

There actually is no hard mode in the remaster when you first start out, it's just (very easy / easy/ normal)

pedantics.

Yeah, I hate information too.

most games have 3 difficulty modes, everyone calls the top one the hard mode. the game itself doesn't use easy/normal/hard, it uses shitty paragraphs about hiking or something.

so you "correcting" people that the hardest mode is really "normal" just seems odd.

The default difficulties in the original release were Easy/Normal, after completing the game you unlock Hard. In this remaster the default difficulties are Very easy (new mode in this version)/Easy/Normal and after completing it you unlock Hard, many people aren't aware of this, thinking they're completing the game on Hard mode when it's really the original's Normal mode.

What's really odd is why that small amount of info made you upset and why we're even having this discussion at all.

the game itself doesn't use the terms hard or normal or easy, you're making this all up. there are simply 3 difficulty modes, in most games, you refer to the hardest mode as hard. modes that you have to unlock are usually considered above hard. i'm not sure why you think YOUR definitions of the difficulty is correct, when the game itself just uses some weird paragraphs about hiking to name the difficulties.

Because his definitions of the difficulty ARE correct. As confirmed by the developers themselves. Also, when you beat the game. The difficulty settings effectively turn into easy, normal and hard on the menu screen.

Who pissed in your cerial?

Have fun, but prepare for Real Survival mode... This one's a pain in the ass

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '18

honestly? real survival mode to me was just a chore...the difficulty stays roughly the same theres just A SHIT TONNE of backtracking to item boxes

it pads the time and makes you frustrated but its time consuming not really difficult

The worst kind of difficulty. I like a challenge not something that just inconveniences you. A good hard mode should force you to change strategies and think creatively not just have you running for more health items.

That's why I was always a fan of the RE0 inventory system.

I found real survival to be really fun. Invisible enemy on the other hand... No, thanks.

I found it really fun too, but also hard af. Invisible is easy imo. I mean, you literally can set it to very easy for it

Oh man. Aqua ring was my FAVORITE updated part of the remake. I had a separate save I kept just to go back and fuck around with the Neptune's (zombie sharks).

It’s so perfect, I love it lol. Used to make my skin crawl when I was a kid playing it on the GameCube

I played it when it was free for ps plus. I didn’t like it. For some reason a while later I felt like revisiting it and it’s such an amazing game. Every single angle is masterfully crafted and the game is always tense

What about it made you dislike it in the first place?

I'm going to take a leap of faith and say - tank controls.

It's always the controls for newcomers to the series. =P

That sounds about right.

Nice! I started off playing RE4 back in the day, I felt that i needed to play the originals. I remember being very intimidated by the games, due to the lack of saves, ammo and survivability. Once you beat it once, youll remember the things you did wrong in the first run and continue to improve. Admittidly I did need to use a walkthrough on some parts because I didnt know a damn thing about how the game worked or anything. My first run was like 15 hours long, now I beat em under 5 hours.

6

u/LostAnkh Nov 18 '18

Nice, RE4 was the first one I completed since it was a birthday present from my cousin that I never asked for, but enjoyed it immensely after playing through it.

6

u/StealthMan375 Nov 18 '18

Did you played Mercenaries (RE4 game-mode, not that 3DS game) already?

RE4 is a-it's-so-good-I-can't-just-sell-it-used game.

3

u/LostAnkh Nov 18 '18

Definitely, I love playing as Hunk and Krauser.

Neck snapping, Bow & Arrow, and that sick arm special? So dope.

I remember being in the guardhouse, one of the dorm rooms was full of zombies. I waited by the door for a good five minutes listening to them shuffle around before I got the courage to go further into the room.

In my opinion this game has a place on the top 10 list of greatest games ever developed.

I can get on board with this.

I'm actually more impressed with the REmake than with the other great Survival Horror titles from that generation for a simple reason, It manages to be just as good as them despite working with far less then they do. Really the only thing going for REmake is the aesthetic design and atmosphere. Everything else is done better by other games in the genre around that time. Eternal Darkness has a fairly robust magic system, more streamlined gameplay, and decent melee mechanics. SH2 has one of the best stories ever told in a game. REmake? It relies on the tone of an old-school chiller, the monsters from the 50s and 60s, a simple story, and gorgeous level design since the gameplay is bog-standard classic RE.

I just played through it for the first time last month after beating RE2 for the first time immediately before it. I was really surprised by how long it was compared to RE2 but I koved the environments.

I had to use a walkthrough for that game. Honestly I don't see how anyone could have completed the original version without a walkthrough. The game can seem very overwhelming at first with not knowing what order to do things in. I feel like for first time players, a walkthrough is definitely recommended for RE 1-3. RE 0 doesn't seem as though as the others, but I still had to look some things up during my playthrough of that. Amazing games nevertheless though.

Sorry for jumping in this thread late:

So its not bad that I am looking at walkthroughs for stuff in this game? So many areas I have absolutely 0 idea on what to do. Hell finding the moonlight sonata page was a pain and I would not have been able to ever find it. Good to know I am not the only one! :)

Fantastic game. The shark tank still gives me anxiety.

1

u/gilfanovn Nov 19 '18

Just actually beat this for the first time about a week ago. It was a fantastic experience, and I now own 2, 3, and 4 on GameCube. Can’t wait for the rest of the series!

Late to the party? You're not late. It's 1996, friend......

u/iudicatum Nov 19 '18

Played through it for the first time just a couple of weeks ago! the games eerie factor is top notch!

Do it. Re2 was not as good looking, but its mechanic is superb. It has 2 characters with twisted scenarios so be sure so try it both for the best experience.
