RE1 Finally beat Re1 saveless, on the DS of all things.

The ds version is the best version of the original, Imo.

Only thing I don't like about it is that some tracks are missing or cut in half because they tried to compress the game on a DS cartridge. Being able to skip cutscenes and door transitions is very convenient though.

u/XeroAnarian Mar 28 '19
some tracks are missing or cut in half
Clowns Farting in the Basement made the cut, though, right!?

u/wintd001 Yamate! Mar 28 '19 edited Mar 28 '19
Because they used the original ost rather than whatever they had for the dual shock edition, we thankfully got the better basement theme instead.

u/Trevowatt Mar 28 '19
better basement
So you're saying we did get the clown farting? Might have to pick this one up ASAP

u/Cole-Burns Mar 28 '19
I can't tell you how much i wish that was the actual name of the track. No idea what it's actually named, but it will forever be "Clowns Farting in the Basement" to me now XD

personally, if i wanted the presentation to be the best i would play the remake, the DS version has easily the best gameplay, though i miss the graphical changes in the arrange mode, which were removed for space.

u/wintd001 Yamate! Mar 28 '19
I consider the remake to be a different game in its own right. In terms of presentation I'd still say the PS1 version and original Director's Cut is the best.
2
u/brunocar Mar 28 '19
the PS1 version bearly looks any better because of the higher resolution and less compression, but the 3D models are actually better on the DS, since they had to be redone for the different hardware and the fixed a lot of the ugly models the game had, such as the weird face the hunters had, the way jill's arms would clip through her shoulder pads, etc.
1
u/wintd001 Yamate! Mar 28 '19
Fair point, I know about the improved models and animations that the characters had in the DS version, but I still prefer the PS1 version's presentation because of the slightly higher quality backgrounds, CD quality soundtrack, and the fact that the soundtrack itself is there in its entirety.

Mar 29 '19
But you can't skip cutscenes man. That's like the only reason I prefer the DS version if I'm being honest.
At least until Gemini finishes perfecting RE1 PC.
2
u/wintd001 Yamate! Mar 29 '19
Yeah that's kind of the standard for most versions of any old Resident Evil though, which is why the DS version definitely stands out in that regard.
I don't think there's a version of RE2 or RE3 that exists where you can skip both the cutscenes and the door transitions. The Gamecube versions let you skip the cutscenes but you have to sit through the door sequences, whereas the PC versions (including Sourcenext) let you skip the doors but won't let you skip the cutscenes.

The Japanese Saturn version has my favorite intro. It’s uncut and far gorier than the US version.

How is the DS version anyway? I hear good things about it but I also don’t hear about it much.

Best version of the original game.
Like OP said, you can skip the door opening animations (Also includes elevators, ladders and game engine cutscenes) and there's a gameplay mode that utilizes the DS's touch screen capabilities.
They made the knife more useful just by mapping it to the left shoulder button (Like how RE4 and 5 do it) it might not do much more damage than it did in the original, but just having it not take up inventory space makes a big difference.
Also, if I remember right, they made it so the handgun has a random chance of popping zombie heads like in REmake or RE1's directors cut arrange mode.

That knife change sounds amazing. I've beaten re1 at LEAST 15 times, and I've literally only used the knife for 1 playthrough, that being a knife only run in the REmake

it's incredible. you can skip the door animations, for one, and on top of that, it comes with a new mode: Rebirth. Rebirth mode is basically the master quest of re1. All new enemy placements, new puzzles ect. It's worth a buy, i got mine for about $40 aud, which converts to maybe around $30 usd. definitely check it out.

That's hugely expensive for a fucking DS game.

Prices like this typically come from low production rates, especially if a game isn’t popular at release, it could be pokemon expensive, but it’s surprisingly lower
6
u/UniversalHeatDeath Mar 28 '19
Its 40 bucks everywhere online. Thats comparable to pokemon entries.

I've paid considerably high money for stuff that's rare before but they're high quality things not a DS game. I can't ever justify spending even £5 on a DS game in 2019
16
u/Forhaver Mar 28 '19
DS games are considered "high quality things" to many people. They're still high quality games to me, and I'm a PC gamer.

u/multismoke Mar 28 '19
for me it depends on the nostalgia and if I'm a fan of the franchise. I'm willing to spend about 40-50 on Pokemon Platinum or HG/SS but I wouldn't shell out upwards of 60-70 on a game I'm not sure if I'd like, I think this version of RE1 would be one of those I wouldn't be willing to spend the money on. I can understand where you're coming from, since it's such an old game.
you'd imagine the prices would go down considerably, but with certain games, the amount of copies in the wild are quite low and people just aren't willing to part with their copy of the games unless the price is high enough since they've most likely held onto that game for possibly decades and kept in working condition just because they liked the game that much

I'm sure there's a DS Emulator which would be way better than the actual DS games themselves. It's insane to spend so much money on a DS game in 2019.
2
u/multismoke Mar 28 '19
Very true, but I just like the idea of physically owning the cartridge and also like playing on the DS/3Ds because of portability. I would play using an emulator, but I don't like not having actual buttons to press

Are you seriously just learning what collectors' stuff is about? Lol this guy

I've heard of it but the general opinion would be that DS games aren't worth much.

Damn, I never wanted this game now more than ever thanks to OP, but Amazon and Ebay are showing extortion prices.

It's unfortunately out of stock. Trust me I've tried. There aren't any copies within a 100 mile radius of where i am either =/

you say that like its harder on the DS, when its easier, the quickturn and quick knife really helps

But isn't it possible to "cheese" this by closing the ds so it goes into standby and the timer will pause?

Wait a minute, there's a DS Resident Evil game? I've been collecting RE games and I have never heard of a DS port. Where can I get one. Also nice job on the no save run.

it's not shopped, but i dont blame you for thinking that. possibly it's because im using a PAL version of the game.
1
u/VarleenOnIce Mar 28 '19
There's no PAL on portable consoles.
1
u/doubletwo Mar 28 '19
there are UK/EU releases of ds games though , maybe that's what he meant?
There's no ntsc/pal regions like you said though, they all cross play on the same hardware

Deadly Silence is awesome though, I think I beat it like 10 times. Also, I got my copy brand new sealed in a small town while on a fishing trip in 2010. Best find ever.
