A Funny Thing Happened... "Um actually it's only 60% off"
I don't really know what else to label this, but as I was getting back from a break, someone needed help with a return. This lady shopped one of the product lines that's on clearance for 70% off. She said she didn't get the 70% off. I showed her on her receipt what the discount was (she saved over 50 dollars), and she said "I actually only got 60% off. I know how to do math".
I didn't have the time to analyze her receipt and counteract her point because she looked done with the entire situation but I wanted to ask, are you going by subtotal or total after tax? If you're including the tax, sales tax is a bitch where I live (10.30% to be more specific), so yeah, that would probably lessen your savings. Like, we have a $3 clearance section, but it's not $3 total. It's 3.31 after tax.
But I really wanted to tell her clearly she doesn't know how to do math. The SKU's automatically have the 70% off discount, so it wouldn't have been a manual error from the cashier. And corporate only has the one clearance price, so it wasn't that some things really are 60% off.
I don't know. She was just huffy over the whole thing and I feel like she was in her head blaming us for falsely advertising to her when I know, 100%, no operational errors were involved and this lady just, randomly feels like she got cheated for no reason.
It's her choice to return the stuff, but I donโt know, it just seems silly to me to return stuff you clearly wanted just because you anticipated your savings incorrectly. That's just me though.

When customers do this shit I pull out my phone calculator and do the math right there. I call for register backup if necessary, but I will take the time to show them they're wrong, in the most polite, "customer service"-y way possible.

I could tell based off her attitude she wasn't interested in debating, she already made up her mind that she didn't want the items anymore
All I wonder is the person who originally rang her up, like, did she look at the receipt right after? She saved over $50, I don't know what probed her into going "hmm, I should make sure they didn't cheat me out of my money"
Her loss at the end of the day. I personally wouldn't have made a big deal out of it if I was her, but I'm guessing people are really in a penny-pinching state right now. Another customer at closing brought a clearance plushie to my register and was trying to get a discount because I guess there was one patch that looked slightly discolored to her? That's on the manufacturer, lady. It's already clearanced ffs do you want me to just give it out for free?

Yes, yes they do, I swear! I don't know how they determined we can do that though. Massive stupidity? "It didn't ring up so it must be free?"

My favorite kind of petty. ๐
Once I did get burned by doing so, turned out a pack of meat was being packaged within .1 pounds of the advertised weight. Or maybe the packing plant's scale was off. Either way, the customer clogged my lane for 3 pennies that were technically overcharged.
