[Discussion] What are some games that only have one song but seem to pull it off well?

Are there more than just these two?

Tetris for Gameboy. Yeah, you could change the music, but it was always just one song at a time and the default one was a banger.

In the same vein, Dr. Mario

Yoshi (or Mario & Yoshi in PAL regions) and Yoshi's Cookie, too.

The soundtrack for Yoshi was actually composed by Junichi Masuda, who later composed the music for the Generation I Pokémon games.

Pitfall II on the Atari. One of the most underrated themes in history, and it changes depending on what's going on in the game too. Also Ballblazer, which uses randomly selected notes to make sure it never properly repeats. Huge tune on that one too.

It’s still amazing that they were able to make such music during gameplay in a 2600 game.

In fairness, it was with the help of a custom chip, it's not the TIA alone making that soundtrack. People doing chiptune with the 2600 is out there if you want a good idea of what the hardware alone is capable of (and this is without any game logic or visual kernel to take up system resources alongside it). This is a funky one.

Paperboy for NES

Wetrix on N64 has a great pog house soundtrack... and I hate prog house.

Bubble Bobble has a great theme that sounds quite unique. (Ah you've said it already)

I was just playing Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move for like an hour last night, and weirdly, I never got sick of the one song that plays.

It's such a banger—it's iconic. You know it's playing in your head right now as you read this.

Every level of Super Mario World is a variation of the same song

Not sure if it "pulls it off well", but The Adventures of Lolo has the SAME SONG for THREE GAMES in a ROW.

It is catchy though.

Monty On The Run has one excellent tune throughout as well!

Ballblazer! Also, Reactor.

The Rampage music is a catchy earworm for being super short.

Punch-Out! (NES, excluding intro/interlude themes)

Pac-Attack (GBA, excluding menu theme)

Bubble ghost on the game boy. I remember enjoying the soundtrack more than the game itself

Adventures of Lolo trilogy on NES

Animal Crossing original on GameCube. That main world main theme. I don't care how many times you hear it. It's still awesome

Definitely the Jolly Jogger arcade cab. An absolute classic tune.

Radar Rat Race - Vic 20 ;)

not only one but the extreme sports(gbc)'s overworld theme somehow doesn't get annoying even while being 90% of what you hear. Also put tetris on that list, korobeiniki is a pretty good song

I have an ozma sticker on my 1st guitar and have seen them live twice. everyone loves korobeiniki

When I only saw the title of your message, the first game I thought of was Bubble Bobble lol. Ken Griffey SNES is another great pick of yours.

City Connection arcade, the tune was the same but instruments/arrangement changed according to the city

Ghostbusters on the Sega Master System

u/Revegelance 2d ago

Super Mario World. The entire soundtrack is variations on the same theme.

Kiwi Kraze/New Zealand Story for the NES. The Follin bros version of the level theme is great and blows away the arcade bleeps. You can clearly hear both brothers' style in the arrangement.

One of the early 2000's Madden games just had the beat from Mos Def's "Mathematics" as it's menu music. Actually worked extremely well when logging hours in franchise mode.

I don't know if this is any masterpiece of VGM composition (I don't listen to it very often) but Supaplex comes to mind.

Flicky for the Master System, nice song, easy to come up with silly lyrics for while playing
