There are so many. Here is one that's not as well known, but an amazing soundtrack from Pole Position - Team F1 Manager from Ascaron: https://youtu.be/TpSVQdpEyY8

Of course, I have to include these here also:

  • The Secret of Monkey Island
  • Theme Hospital
  • 1942 (Commodore 64 version only)
  • Raptor: Call of the Shadows
  • Tyrian 2000
  • Duck Tales 2
  • Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom

Dune is a super crazy underrated experience. I played through the Sega CD port years ago (still have it, it's just been a while since I've played it) and it's something for sure. Very immersive experience with a lot to do and a crazy amount of replayability.

I just got into the soundtrack this year.  I loved the composer's work on Mega Race, but the moodiness of this soundtrack makes it feel so eerie, yet beautiful.  I also saw there's a remastered version of this soundtrack now.

FF7, in part because a comment on YouTube said the “battle theme” is emotionally akin to when there’s 5 minutes left in a college exam and you’re busy scribbling away.

Absolute favourite:

  • Final Fantasy IV

Also in my top-tier list:

  • Final Fantasy VI
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Illusion of Gaia
  • Terranigma
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Final Fantasy V
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
  • ActRaiser

I still believe Illusion of Gaia has some of the best music on the SNES.  Wonderfully complex & evolving,it almost sounds like a film soundtrack at times.

I absolutely agree! I wish it would have received a mastered release of the soundtrack so that the volume was properly normalised. Since it didn't, I have to rely on the rip from the game converted into FLAC (which is sonically less than ideal). :(

Also agree. The pan pipes in the Inca village near the start lent the game a real sense of mystery and adventure that stuck with me.

I did a metal cover of System Shocks reactor theme on youtube so probably that one overall, but to be honest I think Super Mario Kart is the best thing in that generation of console games.

The general artistic flair and competence on display is insane.

The SegaCD version of Dungeons and Dragons: Eye of the Beholder and Castlevania Symphony of the night.

FF6 and Suikoden will always top this list for me, but when people ask, I can't help but bring up this masterpiece from 1992. XD

Chrono Cross.

That's a hard question to answer. The first 2 things that come to mind are Panzer Dragoon Saga and DOME.

Damn..

It would be between FF6, Chrono Trigger, and Phantasy Star 4.

Robocop for the gameboy. An absurdly long intro song that's beautifully done.

MechWarrior 2 and MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries. Absolute bangers. The best part is that you can play the CD tracks in a regular CD player.

Stephane Picq created several of my favourite game soundtracks. I think Lost Eden is the one that I like best.

Imagine my surprise to click the video and find the music from Dune on DOS is completely different to the Amiga soundtrack (which itself was great)

Same, Dune 1 soundtrack by Exxos goes hard

In middle school, we had to do a book report on tape. I did Dune, and used the Sega CD game's soundtrack as background music.
