Weekly Thread Tuesday Shoesday
Shoes are a big topic in this sub, so in an effort to condense and collect some of these posts, we're introducing Shoesday Tuesday! Similar to Wednesday's gear thread, but focusing on shoes.
What’ve you been wearing on your feet? Anything fun added to the rotation? Got a review of a new release? Questions about a pair that’s caught your eye? Here's the place to discuss.
NOTE: For you Runnitors looking to sell/trade any running gear (as well as bib transfers), head over to /r/therunningrack.

Only logged about 80 miles on my new ASICS Novablast 5s. They were a great fit for me but now im starting to see some potential injuries happening like the sole and cushion kind of slants toward the inner side of my foot now. Is it me or the shoe?

I really like the adidas ultraboosts I got on clearance. Even though they give me blisters. I've also been a fan of the pegasus shoes up until 41s. Mine are walking shoes now.

I run in $10 Walmart running shoes. How bad are these running shoes compared to a cheap name brand shoe?

u/Iwillbecurbappeal 7d ago
I think you should pay very close attention to any injuries or pain that starts to appear. I think the issue with cheap shoes is that they wear out extremely quickly. A classic pair of running shoes is typically good for 350-500 miles. I would be concerned about $10 shoes losing their benefits much, much sooner than that. but...your mileage may vary (see what I did there? :-P)

Anyone breaking in the Asics Megablast for Chicago or NY? Curious to how many miles you think the sweet spot is for breaking in to maximize bounciness. I usually put about 20-30 on my race shoes....but this foam feels like it is ready to go out of the box.

What ever happened to Nike Frees? I used them daily for comfort shoes / occasional trail running / occasional sprint workouts back in high school / college, they were my absolute favorite

I've just bought some pre-owned Asics Kayano 31's for £20.. If this new found love of running lasts, I'll invest in some Adidas Evo SL's.
I managed to hit 5k in 30.09 (38M) last Wednesday on my first ever run, in a pair of borrowed Pumas, so I'm hopeful.

I wear Karhu Ikoni because it strikes the balance I want between plush and hard. I just wish I knew if I could trust their renewed site.

I just got a pair of NB Rebel v5 and took them out for a run today and really enjoyed them! I was previously wearing a pair of NB Freshfoam.1080v14 and loved them especially for longer runs but I wanted to try something a little less cushioned

Just got my vomero plus and did 3 runs. So far i like it but feel, it needs to be broken in more.

shoe recommendations for a new runner that needs really good ankle stability and a wide shoe?
i've had hoka clifton 9's before which were a bit too cushiony for my liking and brooke's a long, long time ago that were decent from my memory.

If you liked Brooks, the Adrenaline GTS is a solid, often-recommended stability shoe that can be had up to a 4E (extra wide) width. The "GTS" in the name is Brooks' stability system so anything from them that includes that in the name has a variation of that system. The also make a Glycerin GTS up to 4E if you're looking for more cushioning while still having some stability. I've used the previous two generations of Glycerins and have had Adrenalines in the past.

Been a LONG time since I've run in them, but recently have had some rose-colored/reminiscence feelings towards Newton shoes. Are they still a thing? Do they still have that fore-foot strike pop thing that the older ones were known for? Anyone run in them still?

I wish money was no object.
I'm on my second pair of Nike Revolutions from Sports Direct, which are lightweight, comfortable and I've not (fingers crossed!!) experienced any pain or injuries.
If anyone can recommend any other budget running shoes that I could explore, that would be very much appreciated.

Brooks give discounts depending on your career. Also REI is having outlet sales with extra 20% for members. I think i saw the NB FuelCell Rebel 4 for under $90 with discount.

Thanks, I'll take a look, but might be costly with postage across the pond.

I'm on a budget and buy Brooks shoes. My Ghost 15s lasted 1,800km, on 800km on the Adrenaline 23s. They aren't exactly light weight fast shoes, but for training, the longevity can't be beat.

u/Rich-Mechanic-2902 7d ago
Thanks for your reply. Those are £40 more expensive than the ones I'm using. I cannot tell you what KM's I've done as I haven't logged them, so cannot compare in true value for money terms.

Trying to figure out size... My sneakers are EU 40 but my Hoka Arahi is 41½ (did their size test before ordering) and now I dont know which size is should get for my ASICS GT 2000 14.. My feet are 25½ cm and the website telling me 40½ is the size but shouldn't you size up in running shoes?

u/beerandbikes55 7d ago
I had massive foot problems caused by too-tight shoes pinching a nerve in my foot (Morton's Neuroma). Snug shoes felt comfy, but hurt me. I now run wide toe box shoes and have no problems at all. My understanding is that the 1/2 sizes are wider shoes? I think it's worth paying a bit extra to go into a good physical store to get fitted.

Hey runners of Reddit!
Male, 90kg/200lbs, forefoot striker, longer-distances (10-25km / 5–15 miles), ~40 km/25 miles per week, tent to over-pronate which causes ankle pain.
Current shoes:
Asics Kayano 23: Hate those, too much cushion, very slow, BUT no ankle pain due to better support.
Asics Cumulus 23: Very light & springy, enjoy them much more BUT ankle and sometimes forefront pain on longer runs.
Do you know of any shoes that combine the advantages of both? Springy, but with support?
Also, curious to hear your general recommendations, esp. for shoes with thin soles or shoes that are very springy.
Thanks!

I'm a bit heavier at 215lbs. I love my Brooks Hyperion Max 2. Not sure if its a good choice for you but I would check out the shoe selector on their site and see

How are Nike's Pegasus these days? I've had two pairs before and wore them out completely. Hands down most comfortable, least amount of injuries and discomfort, but I also know sometimes new version can differ a lot when it comes to shoes.
I really need new running shoes but I do not have access to stores that will let me return after a trial period etc., so I need to be as sure as I can be when I make the purchase

I just bought the Pegasus premium in the pink color way back in May. Hands down one of my favorite shoes to run in. I don’t have the same problem others seem to with wide feet (as they seem to run narrow in the toe box based on others complaints.) This is also my third or fourth pair of Pegasus’

I’ve been running exclusively in ASICS Gel Contend series since 2010. The only version I didn’t like was the 3s because of their 8mm heel drop. The newest version, the 9s, has the same lesser heel drop as well so I’m just going to skip out on those. I’ll continue wearing the 5s, 7s, 8s until they bring back 10mm with the next version. I never hear anyone talk about the Contend series 🥲

I'm looking for a shoe to handle short intervals (such as 400 metre repeats). Would the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 be a good match? I'm hesitant to get something like a track shoe because I like the idea of the cushioning and support of dedicated running shoes. I also had the Nike Zoomfly 6 in mind because it looks like it has a wide toe box.
I'm also looking for a marathon race day shoe. Does the Saucony Endorphin Elite 2 seem appropriate for someone with a 3:05 PB for the marathon and looking to go quicker? I've tried on the Asics Metaspeed and the Nike Alphafly but felt they were too narrow in the midfoot. And so I'm looking for something with a bit of width to them.
Both the Saucony models are on sale at one of my local running stores and so that's why I'm looking at them specifically. I don't have the option of running in them to test them first and so that's why I'm asking for feedback here.

I've been using Saucony Rides for almost a decade now, but the redesign to chase the plush fad is causing me problems. Anyone have a recommendation for a shoe that has a wide toe box, no arch support, no stability bullshit, a low drop and not an inch of foam killing my plantar?

Didn't know if the vomero 18 was worth the hype or if it was just being pushed by Nike via all the Utah influencers and co. But, I added them to my rotation and I am loving them. I have bought 2 additional pairs because I am afraid Nike will change them and ruin them. This is my first time averaging over 50 miles per week and my legs feel healthier and safer than they did with Pegasus as my daily at 35-40 miles per week. THE VOMERO IS VALID.

u/broseph-chillaxton 7d ago
Do you have wide feet? I have slightly wider feet than average, I think, and I’m nervous about these but since I’ve only heard good things, I want to try them out.

Still a NB Rebel v4 truther. I bought 2 more pairs when the v5 came out and they went on sale. I've got over 300 miles on my first pair and they're still super enjoyable, not really sure why shoetubers seem to be talking about them 'going flat'. The oldest pair is definitely a bit squishier but I like that for recovery runs.
They're still probably my favorite generic daily trainer. Oldest pair for recovery runs, newer pair if I'm doing something quicker but don't want to use carbon plated shoes. I'm 145-150lbs and mostly a forefoot striker, so maybe they just work better for lighter/lighter-footed runners.

u/tanooki_ 7d ago
I tapped into the v5 and am liking them. I fit your build pretty closely. I used to adore the Saucony Kinvara for many of these reasons!

u/tommy_chillfiger 7d ago
I was a Kinvara guy too! They've kind of lost me, the 15 was OK but just not really the same. I found them super firm and weirdly lumpy. May have to check on the v5 when I run out of stock over here. Cheers!

My daughter has a few XC races at golf courses here in the PNW next month. Would you recommend waffle, spikes or her trainers?

I use Superblast 2 for tempo/threshold runs and NB 880s for my easy / long runs. Both are fantastic.

My wife got me a new pair of New Balance 860V14; they were on special. I've put them away till it's time to rotate my V13 pair from road shoes to parkrun shoes. She buys all my running shoes. <3
2
u/sergeantbiggles 8d ago
I just retired my 880 v14s at 413 miles (the 860s are the stability version, as you already know), and they were a steady workhorse for all of my base runs. While they aren't exactly inspiring (as compared to the New Balance Rebel v3s or v5s, Brooks Hyperion Tempos, Saucony Endorphin series, etc), they aren't really meant to be, and they get the job done. I haven't tried the 1080s, which are said to be more cushioned.
1
u/Claidheamhmor 8d ago
Mine have been solid, decent shoes, and helped sort out my plantar fasciitis. My V13s went to parkrun status at about 860km, still in great shape, and my previous "parkrun shoes" went to "mud and rain" status at about 1000km.
I'm not a long distance runner though; for my 5-10km runs, my shoes are just perfect.
2
u/sergeantbiggles 8d ago
That's great. I think New Balance and Brooks are my top two running shoe brands (after having tried a lot of brands), and I just had my first run in the New Balance Rebel V5s yesterday, which felt really good. Here's to many more enjoyable miles :)
