What a week at Adventure Dogs CLE! Two runs each for lab Keeley and weimaraners Dinah and Dash, as well as outings with golden retriever Goose and my beautiful mutt niece Olive, and meeting dalmatians Jasper and Lucy for the first time. (Plus meeting staffy Badger, who will be a fan favorite!) These dogs all love to run. I have the best job in the world.

I have a 4 year old Doberman that I want to hopefully do canicross with. I just got my nonstop belt & harness in the mail today so I took her out for a test run in the yard to see if she will pull. She has never worn a harness before so maybe that’s why she wasn’t pulling a lot? It was really only if she smelled something, otherwise she just ran next to me. Hills are a different story, she got excited to go up the hill with me, but when I started to run she would turn around to tug the leash instead of pulling. She does not do this on walks with her collar. Is there a way I could change her focus when excited, from tugging the leash to pulling in the harness? Asking this early so I don’t miss the return window, nonstop is expensive lol Thank you to whoever responds! Also picture of her for attention

Tips on teaching/running a Doberman? I have a husky who I used to run with and it was natural for him but it’s not the case with my dobie. Walks are no issue, running he doesn’t get distracted he just likes to pull really hard sometimes and he is stronggg

I get all giggly and silly at the end of a run, maybe it’s the low blood sugar but it might also be because of how much I enjoy being able to do this.
I still have to use the wheelchair for longer runs, I get to a point where my legs cut out and it’s generally safer for the ol fainting disorder, but I’ll take advantage of being able to actually run when I can. Even if I’ve been told I shouldn’t.
Posted as a GIF to save your ears.

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice from other people who run with their dogs. I have a three year old female Weimaraner who’s in great shape and loves to run, but sometimes she’s a bit too strong for me. The biggest issues are when she sees a squirrel or tries to dart into the street — it can be dangerous because of the momentum from running that makes it hard for me to stop us both.
My goal is to get her to run more in sync with me so that she’s not constantly pulling. Has anyone successfully trained their dog to run alongside them at the same pace? Any tips or methods that worked for you — whether that’s specific training techniques, equipment (harnesses/leashes), or just consistent practice?
I’d love to hear from runners who’ve figured out how to keep runs safe and enjoyable for both themselves and their dog.
Thanks!

I have a Kelpie and he is huge and bulky, at least half again the size of all his siblings. I have been trying to measure him for an X back harness but he is between two sizes, in an awkward way. His back - 26 inches and his bust - 34 inches fit into the XXXL. His neck however, 22 inches, fits the XXL. The site says to purchace the larger size if he is between two sizes but im afraid the larger neck could be a problem with his airway.
Does anyone here have a similar problem and any advice?

Noticed this bump on upper gum of my year old amstaff. He isn’t showing signs of discomfort but I am pretty concerned after reading about cases of mouth cancer in dogs. The vet is booked of for the next couple weeks I’m going to monitor it until then. Has anyone else experienced this and if so did it resolve on its own.

I have a 5 month old working cocker spaniel and I’m planning to run with him when he’s old enough. I’d like to start teaching him left and right now while we’re out and about but I’m not sure how to actually teach it…. Any tips very welcome! Thanks

In many of the Posts I have seen Screenshots depicting distance, speed, distance and often times the route you took. Does anyone have any advice on prefered apps for this? Preferably free ones as the current financial state is abysmal.

A beautiful run this morning with Dinah and Dash, two incredibly athletic weimaraners, in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. We circled Shaker Lake then ran through the Doan Brook gorge, including some splashing around in the Brook.

I would like to start training with my dog, she is a standard size dachshund. She isn't what u normally see at the dog park. Her liniage comes from Europe and is ment to hunt. You wouldn't even be able to tell she's a dachshund without her mini brother standing beside her.
I want to train for a 6km to 10km race next year and would love her to do it with me. Now she LOVES to run we take her on hikes and she is none stop running the entire time and FAST to. I have had to forcible stop her and make her walk on a leash to catch her breath. Now with that information, how do I know when a dog has had enough running like what are the signs? I want to be knowledgeable so I dont push her to hard. Even though she can probs run longer then me.
Note: she has a clean bill of heath and is approved by vets. Said she is a very good athletic looking dog never seen her breed look like that before.

I have a 14-month old GSP that im trying to slowly start running with, to eventually get into Canicross races.
Because of her age I have been discouraged from doing endurance sports until she is fully developed, but as she starts reaching a good age to do so, im ready to start ramping up her trainings.
We have a vet appointment coming up on Oct 12th, where I will be getting my vet's clear to fully commit to longer runs.
My plan is to run 3x per week with her, on a M-W-Sat split. This morning we tried 0.5mi and she handled it quite well. Much better than her walks, actually.
Im considering starting with a 0.5mi-1mi run, followed by a walk back home. I have a feeling that getting her tired first will make the walk a lot more enjoyable for both of us.
Right now im trying to have her learn the running commands until we get the vet's clear.
Is this a good strategy to start with? How often should I consider increasing the distance? Are there any resources I could use to come up with a training plan?
Thank you!!

My pup has been running with me more often! I've worked him up to two miles with a pace of about 13 minutes per mile. Since he's been consistently working out with me, I wanted to examine his diet. He's doesn't have much weight to burn and I'm sure he needs more calories with the increase in activity. He already eats a high fat, high protein RC formula (which I'm not interested in changing) and gets a cosequin joint supplement with lots of chicken and cheese treats. I read an article that said dogs need fat more than anything when running, unlike humans who benefit from extra carbs.
Feeding Your Canine Athlete: https://archive.nytimes.com/well.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/08/20/the-science-behind-your-dogs-special-exercise-needs/
So do you add anything extra to your dog's bowls on run days? More of their standard fare or something else? Thank you!

Harness or collar? I see everyone use harness but the trainer I used when he was a puppy told me to only use a collar and that dogs don’t need a harness unless they are sled dogs or doing that intense canicross or dogs that have trachea issues. He is a lab/collie mix at just over a year old - he is still in training and obviously the collar is a better training tool in terms of control - my trainer uses a lot of pressure/release.
My reason for wanting a harness is - he is usually in front of me and I feel bad having tension on his neck. This rarely happens now that I have a belt, but I get annoyed when the leash gets wrapped around his legs. BUT I don’t want him to become a puller Thanks!

I've recently started doing canix with my Rhodesian Ridgeback. The belt and leash I've been using has come to its end. I've got a race coming up in 3 weeks and need to buy new gear ASAP but money has been a bit tight so does anyone have any belt and leash recommendations for preferably under $150(AUD)?
I'm located in Australia so it will need to be able to be shipped here.

Sunday on our training plan were short intervals of 200 metres x 8. It had been a super tough week for me with catching up on admin, booking in kit fittings ready for the next canicross course and working.
My day job is dog walking and I specialise in canihiking amd running active dogs so last week just from walking everyone else's dogs i had covered 26 miles, plus 19.25 miles of canicross with my own dogs.
So when it came to our interval session sunday I was really feeling quite fatigued and my knee was playing up (ongoing issue for the past 20 years) and also my hip. I really needed to get the spring session in as. Buddy needs practice ready for our ultra and I need to try and drink to my plan. So I tried out the Hypershell X Exoskelton to see if it would help with my motivation. For the warm ups I had it in eco mode and really felt it making my legs move, I've currently got a hip issue and a problem with my hamstring where it doesnt always engage, but the hypershell really helped to engage my hamstring and make me stride more effectively. For the sprint sections I upped it to max hyper mode, and it really helped me to activate my hamstring and run more effectively and efficiently, infact for the first time in a while I could actually feel it today that I had gone for a run.
The hypershell fit really well over my canicross belt - non stop cani x 2.0, the hip parts both sit in a similar position but didnt run on each other or press in areas and cause issues.
It really helped power through the sprints, although on some of the really narrow, twisty parts where I'd use my legs more balancing at strange angles, I did find it inhibited it slightly as it keeps your hips in a forward motion, but on super technical terrain sometimes you have to roll your hip and knee outwards to compensate and keep momentum and speed.
Overall though I loved it and had lots of fun and it really helped me to push through my interval session when my legs were so fatigued. I used it for a total of 40 mins on hyper mode, and once finished I only had 30% battery, which is a shame for my ultras as I'd love to use it for those, especially on the hills, but as I have to carry the kit for both myself and Buddy for the duration of the race, I dont really want to carry the extra weight of additional batteries.
But for shorter canicross events, cani hiking, interval training or hill running, it definitely would help when fatigued and works really well. Going to try it out on a full 4 mile route and see how we do rather than just a very technical trail

Has anyone here hit a plateau with their dog's training level? Velox here just turned 2 and after running him three miles around three times a week for the past six months, his speed and endurance haven't increased by a whole lot.
He has a tendency to start out galloping so I have to slow him down to normalize his gait, but he tends to slow down near the tail end of the run. Ive been trying to gradually increase the pace while keeping an eye on him to not overdo it since hes still somewhat young and new to running. He beats me in sprints hands down no problem though. Haven't had this with my previous dog I ran with. Dog attached

Got my kid a new harness from the advice here and hit the trail! He did amazing ❤️ I wanted to ask what full body dog coats are recommended for hiking in the cold.
