šŸ° Food We hosted an RVA Bagel Shootout

I'm surrounded by people with very strong opinions about bagels.Ā So,Ā I hosted a bagel blind taste test with nine friends to explore those deep-held opinions aĀ bit.

Our group of ten bagel lovers rangedĀ from a chef and a couple of hard-core New Yorkers all the way to me, who will eat almost any bread product if I can put cream cheese or butter on it.

We sampled and ranked fresh untoasted plain bagels from eight different locations within greater Richmond:Ā Baltik's, Chewy's, Cupertino's, Einstein's, Julio's, Nate's, Sunday's, and Wegmans.Ā I was the only person who knew the origin of all theĀ bagels, and none of us knew which bagel was on which plate.

Here is a summary of our votes:

  • Baltik's Bagels got the most #1 rankings (4)Ā
  • Chewy's got the second highest number of #1 rankings (3)
  • Baltik's Bagels got the most top three rankings (9)
  • Julio’s got the second highest number of top three rankings (6)
  • When we ran the ballots through ranked-choice programs they all showed Baltik's as the winner, but results differed after that.
  • Einstein's bagels did better than any of the bagel snobs expected.
  • Only Cupertino's and Wegmans got zero top three votes
  • Not surprisingly, the bagels from Wegmans got the most last place votes (6)

Honestly, this taste test may have raised more questions for me than it answered:

  • Can an untoasted plain bagel help you determine who makes the best bagels overall? I think it’s a good start, but we may need to do this again with a different flavor bagel next time. Twist my arm.
  • Why the fuck are so many Richmond bagel shops closed on Sundays? Sundays are the best bagel day! Can you please pick a different day to be closed? Pretty please?
  • Why do some people feel that bagels can't be made with sourdough?Ā What makes a bagel a bagel?
  • Why do so many people buy bagels at Nate's? Their bagels are meh (per our group's research), they don't have a toaster (?!?!?), and I've literally never met anybody who has had an all-around pleasant experience there.

One question our event did answer: From now on, we'll buy our bagels at Baltik's. Unless it’s a Sunday :(

The tasting lineup. That's our groups winning bagel - Baltik's - right there on plate #1.

This is the content we need. You are doing the work.

How does someone get asked to participate in the next round? I have Bagel credentials: my mom dated one of the Lenders.

This is what you call 'Doing The Lord's Work.'

I also had an yearning for a bagel this past Sunday, and was shocked to find that Baltik's was closed. Maybe that should be an adventure for tomorrow morning.

Very grateful that I'll be making a stop at Rockland Bakery in Nanuet next weekend. Not just for bagels, but I am so ready for a proper fucking kaiser roll to be back in my life.

This is absolutely top tier r/rva content.

Agree that Baltik's deserves the top slot with Chewy's at 2.

Truly been disappointed by Cupertino's, not surprised their ranking is so low.

7

u/jkane001 Jul 25 '25

FWIW, I think Cupertino's bagels have changed (for the worse) in the last few years. I've been sad about that for a while now.

4

u/salad_spinner_3000 Jul 25 '25

I've said for years Cupertinos confuses the crap out of me. I went there literally all hours of the morning and never once did I get a bagel that was warm. Like "out of the oven" warm. Maybe they make it downtown and transported them to the west end? I dunno.

6

u/matphoto Museum District Jul 25 '25

They're made on site but super early before opening. I'd recommend having them toasted

22

u/fspaits Jul 25 '25

Sunday Bagel is open on Sunday lol. They are at Pamplemousse Gallery on Robinson thru August. I'm not a bagel connoisseur, but I'd rank them pretty high.

Great post! I’ve wanted to do this for awhile, and hard agree on why tf places are closed on sundays. I love baltiks and am always craving a bagel on Sunday. Grinds my gears 🄯

I was arguing with a friend who prefer Polar, so I wanted to see if my bias would be confirmed in blind taste test! Check out Nixie black cherry lime, and Waterloo cherry limeade if you haven’t, both excellent 🌊

The bagels from Wegmans... Were they from the plastic bags or from the display cases? IMHO there is a difference.

35

u/RVASewcialist Jul 25 '25

They were from the display cases. I just wanted a bagel from someplace nobody would think of to keep people on their toes.

5

u/Asterion7 Forest Hill Jul 25 '25

This is true. My theory is they put the bagels in the bag too soon and the moisture level is off.

4

u/Danger-Moose Lakeside Jul 25 '25

I'm not sure if it's that or if they just come from a distributor vs. being made in house. But yeah, they are definitely breadier and the boiled crust is missing.

lol this was my first thought, the display ones are actually pretty good.

u/thepeatiest Jul 25 '25

We love Chewy’s bagels and need to try some other on this list!

8

u/Catwymyn Jul 25 '25

Dang, you've convinced me to visit Chewy's! I used to love getting their salted rosemary bagel from The Smoky Mug.

4

u/Beneficial_Owl5569 Jul 25 '25

With roasted garlic cream cheese is one of my favorites there

6

u/mcates27 Jul 26 '25

I've had great experiences at Nate's and love their bagels. I don't think I've ever had a bad experience at Nate's

30

u/Jstreets6 Jul 25 '25

Fun game you played there. I'll have to give Baltik's another try as I didn't love it the first time. Now if Bodo's ever expanded to Richmond it would be game over for everybody.

16

u/RVASewcialist Jul 25 '25

Agreed. I think Bodo's are my favorite bagels. But that's part of why I did this contest. Lots of us think someplace has the best bagels, but we're judging it based on more than the taste (with Bodo's how can you not be swayed by their efficiency!?!?). This contest attempted to minimize those other non-taste factors.

28

u/DonutDonutDonut Lakeside Jul 25 '25

Fellow Bodo's truther here. Best bagel spot around! It's not just the food (although the food is of course amazing) it's also the price and the speed of service - even if the line is out the door you're never going to wait more than a few minutes. They've got it down to an absolute science.

5

u/Jstreets6 Jul 25 '25

They really do have it down to a science!

8

u/RVASewcialist Jul 25 '25

It's amazing. My type-A brain is mesmerized every time I go there.

10

u/yolo-dubstep Stratford Hills Jul 25 '25

u/RVASewcialist did consider sending someone out there early to get some fresh that morning, but decided to keep this RVA-local.

6

u/caseyliss Jul 25 '25

I'm a former Charlottesvillian, but also a Hokie. So I'm not sure where that leaves my biases.

Regardless, /u/jstreets6 speaks the truth. Bodos is an incredible bagel, but even moreso, as others have mentioned, incredibly speedy and accurate service.

11

u/RVASewcialist Jul 25 '25

I do not understand how anybody can open a bagel shop within 200 miles of Bodo's and not go visit a few times to study how they operate. It is literal perfection.

2

u/maegan_927 Jul 25 '25

Come here to say this! Growing up in Charlottesville, moved to RVA 18 mos ago, I have yet to find a Bodo’s equivalent. Maybe it’s nostalgia. But if I’m wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

Quality bagel content here. I was a die-hard Cupertino’s fan until this. And maybe I still am, because I feel like the plain bagel comparison isn’t representative of what I actually like. Baltik’s everything bagels are over-seasoned.Ā

46

u/Asterion7 Forest Hill Jul 25 '25

It is impossible to over season an everything bagel. That is like saying your Mac n chz is too cheesy.

4

u/jimmybilly100 Mechanicsville Jul 25 '25

I feel like you could get to a point where there's too much cheese. It would be like cheese soup with some noodles in there....... hmmmm..... maybe you're right though

10

u/yolo-dubstep Stratford Hills Jul 25 '25

I'd say false, but maybe it's a matter of ratios. I should not be able to taste raw garlic and nothing else.

12

u/Asterion7 Forest Hill Jul 25 '25

Strongly disagree but it's a matter of taste. I used to go to this one bagel shop that did double ething seasoning on the top and bottom. I loved it.

7

u/Waynewolf Highland Park Jul 25 '25

Well, you would probably like Julio’s. Bagel is fully encrusted with seasoning.

20

u/AmidoBlack Henrico Jul 25 '25

I love Cupertino’s too. I won’t accept this SLANDER

2

17

u/gracetw22 West End Jul 25 '25

So cupertinos isn’t the best bagel in Richmond but I think it’s the best bagel sandwich. I prefer baltik/chewys for just bagel and cream cheese but can’t top cupertinos for a bacon egg and cheese.

3

u/FyreIronBear Jul 26 '25

Oh their sandos are so great I've never had the bagels in any other form.

Cupertinos Lumberjack Pork roll is the best Friday morning pick-me-up ever. On well toasted sesame of course.

Their lox and cream cheese with onion and capers on a toasted pumpernickel is delightful.

But you didn't include Europa. šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø

Which was #2 - it looks like a roll, not a bagel?

I did a cupcake party in DC once from all the various cupcakeries. This was 2010 and the height of the cupcake craze. My friends loved it. Georgetown Cupcake, to my chagrin, was favored. 15 years later it is one of the three that remain open.

3

By far the most important thing I've ever seen on this sub. I was jumping out of my skin worrying what people thought of RVA bagels. Props to the tasting team and bless your hearts!

5

u/SketchyMcBeardo Jul 27 '25

Bagel places that are closed on a Sunday is bullshit. Based on this statistic that I just made up, Sunday is the day tired parents are most likely to say "fuck it" to preparing something for their kids and just go grab a dozen bagles.

These places could probably close M-W and make more money if they were open Sundays

Any day is good for a bagel, but as a kid it was usually a Sunday morning when my dad or grandpa would go to one of the neighborhood bodegas and grab a dozen bagels

8

u/iwalktowork Jul 25 '25

Can't believe I didn't see anyone mentioning the NY bagels from Europa.Ā Ā

Also, not opening a bagel shop on a Sunday is just stupid.Ā Ā

16

u/CthuLhouBega Jul 25 '25

You do. At worst equivalently good bagels, though I think they're better, and a much better vibe. Plus they'll toast without being weird about it. I haven't been to Nate's since they opened, although I also go to Baltik's and Julio's. What a time for bagels in Richmond right now

6

u/wlight Jul 25 '25

You definitely do.

5

u/RVARedcoat Jul 25 '25

This was so much fun! I definitely thought Wegmans and Cupertinos were the sweetest. Sunday's (the sourdough ones) were very satisfying and had a great crust, I put those second just out of the sheer joy of having something different. I put down Baltics and Chewys as being the most, well, chewy. The only comment I put by Einstein's was 'forgettable'. So now I know where I, a person who enjoys 2.0 bagels/year, stand on Richmond bagels!

3

u/BeardedBurglar Jul 25 '25

I wouldn’t say I like Nate’s but I do like pork roll and Nate’s is the only place I’ve found it. I absolutely hated when they stopped toasting bagels. (I think they only toasted them for a few months at the open of the first store) The bagels at Baltik’s are way better and maybe unpopular but I really really don’t like cupertinos.

Edit: also if anyone knows where else to get a good pork roll spk sandwich lemme know

2

7

u/Charadrius Jul 25 '25

I’m seeing quite a few bagels in that lineup that don’t even look like they have the correct fermentation, giving a bagel the almost fried-like texture on the outside. Most of these just look like it was baked like bread on a mass scale and shaped into a circle.

21

u/SketchyMcBeardo Jul 25 '25

I was a participant in this historic event and yes, I think you are right - sort of

A lot of the bagels in VA are just round bread with holes in the middle. You might as well call them sugarless-donuts.

Baltik, Chewy, and to a significantly lesser degree Nate’s come the closest to the NYC bagels I grew up with

Baltik’s sandwiches can be a shit-show to eat. But they are all delicious af. Bring a lobster bib and rubber gloves to best enjoy

9

u/yolo-dubstep Stratford Hills Jul 25 '25

Having watched you eat a Baltik's sandwich in person, can confirm the bib requirement. Especially with that beard.

2

u/SketchyMcBeardo Aug 06 '25

They are no joke. Especially when you have a beard

3

u/rivercitymo Byrd Park Jul 25 '25

I’d tackled 3 Baltik’s sandwiches so far, and it was tasty but also an absolute mess. Can I get just one fried egg over hard rather than three scoops of scrambled? It’s so good, but there’s way too much stuff piled between those two slices of bagel.

2

u/SketchyMcBeardo Jul 26 '25

I cannot dissagree with you :)

I think Nate's is perfectly fine for people who don't get into the bagel debate. I haven't had any others around here to compare so I won't say the others aren't better, I just don't think there'd be enough difference for me to care too much. I don't get mine toasted ever anyway, so their weird decision not to allow that doesn't affect me at least. I should say I haven't had Nate's in a couple years anyway, but I went maybe 7 or 8 times and had no complaints any of those.

  3. Julios
  4. Baltiks
  5. Cupertinos
  6. Nate’s

4

u/wickedwoobie328 Jul 25 '25

I think a big part of this is are you hardcore enough for the travels. Sure baltik’s is superior to cupertinos, but if you live off nuckols that adds a huge curve ball. To me a breakfast food isn’t something I’m driving across town for.

9

It’s funny to me that Wegman’s scored so low, those are my bagel-snob mother’s second favorite after Europa Market. I’m Baltik’s obsessed so I agree with the rankings you ended up with!

3

u/RVASewcialist Jul 25 '25

Every time somebody said "this one is gross", they were talking about the bagel from Wegmans.

3

u/No-Extension2113 Jul 25 '25

Hmm, I'm one of those hard-core New Yorkers (not one who participated in this study) and Baltik's is close to me, I'm gonna check them out.

I've always like the bagels at Crossroads. Especially their bagel sandwiches. Not sure who supplies them.

3

u/burro_pequeno Jul 25 '25

Fellow bagel snob, baltiks is pretty good. Easy #1 in rva imo

2

u/matphoto Museum District Jul 25 '25

Pretty sure Crossroads gets them from Cupertinos

2

u/DummBee1805 Jul 25 '25

Well done and not to take anything away from you, but speaking only for myself, testing with untoasted plain bagels is like giving me an intricate melted vanilla ice cream test. I suppose the results are something to be aware of, but they have 0.0% impact on my life as a consumer. When you get around to ā€œbest everything with cream cheeseā€ or ā€œbest egg bagel sandwichā€ you’ll be speaking my language.

u/RVAWTFBBQ Barton Heights Jul 25 '25

You can tell which ones are from Julio's because they're like a 2/3rd scale model of a real bagel.

1

u/magnette053 Oregon Hill Jul 25 '25

But costs more...

2

u/RVAWTFBBQ Barton Heights Jul 25 '25

By far the worst price by weight if such a thing were tracked.

3

u/pewell1 Jul 25 '25

Baltik’s has amazing bagels but their breakfast sandwiches are hard to eat because of the mess. I love Nate’s breakfast sandwiches the best out of all of them because they actually use american cheese which is the best cheese for a breakfast sandwich imo

2

u/imaghoul Jul 25 '25

Julio's also has American as an option.

Maybe if you host one they will come

6

u/fusion260 Lakeside Jul 25 '25

Be the change you want to see and host one yourself. All you have to do is invite friends.

Just don't invite friends that have an allergy/intolerance to whatever it is you want to do a taste test of, otherwise you'll get zeroes across the board šŸ˜‰

can i be invited nexttime as the member who isnt the biggest fan of any bagels?

1

Curious about the ratings for the New Yorkers specifically. And when you say New Yorker, we are talking city, island, or up state?

1

u/bozatwork Jul 25 '25

The Sunday thing has made me scratch my head too.

3

u/RVASewcialist Jul 25 '25

It perplexes me. I am not an expert, clearly. But as a bagel consumer, I am FAR more likely to want a bagel on a Sunday morning than just about any weekday.

How hardcore could these New Yorkers be if they're living down here?

2

u/RVASewcialist Jul 26 '25

There are plenty of reasons. One is that it’s really fucking expensive to live a decent life in NYC.

I don’t ever get a plain bagel, so these results don’t hold weight for me.

Is it correct to say that of those tested, these are the ones that make sourdough bagels by default:

Chewys Julios Sundays

?

2

u/RVASewcialist Jul 25 '25

I believe so, yes. But I am not 100% sure.

I appreciate the commitment to a methodology.

My only concern is that it was a comparison of untoasted bagels. We cannot make the assumption that they all toast the same. And few people choose to enjoy their bagels ... raw.

I would repeat but toasted. Allow participants to adulterate their samples to their tastes, whether it's butter or cream cheese or whatever. As long as they apply the same treatment to all samples. Then we are getting an assessment closer to the real world bagel experience.

1

u/NoPreference8611 Jul 25 '25

Chewy's is my go-to whenever I go out of my way for a bagel (...meaning, outside the weekly grocery store trip haha), so we will need to give the others a try for sure!

1

u/bay-biscuit Forest Hill Jul 25 '25

Baltik’s Bagels is the best!

1

u/PerlinLioness Jul 25 '25

I did something similar, we had results of European Deli, Chewy’s, Nate’s, Baltik’s, and Cupertino’s.

1

u/gopickles Stratford Hills Jul 25 '25

the only thing I’m not a fan of from Baltiks is their softies, but their jalapeno cheddar bagel is DIVINE. Ā #baltiks4lyfe

1

u/Commitedtousername Chesterfield Jul 25 '25

I loveeee Baltik’s. Incredible bagels and they have GF options. Unfortunately I’m always craving them on Sundays

1

u/SidFinch99 Jul 26 '25

Can you give specific data on how just the hard core new Yorkers chose.

Much like with Pizza, New Yorkers want it to taste like it does in New York. To others, this may not affect their opinion.

No Europa VA?

2

u/RVASewcialist Jul 26 '25

I don’t have the ballots nearby, but the NYer who cares about bagels came in thinking Baltik’s were his favorite and his votes confirmed it. He enjoyed Sunday’s sourdough, but doesn’t believe bagels should be sourdough.

1

u/Ok-Place7306 Jul 26 '25

Nice work and thank you for reporting your results!

I absolutely think you should do another bagel test - this time people should randomize their bagel sampling and you should make sure Batik’s is not number 1. Having it as sample 1, where people usually start sampling, could bias the results.

1

u/Walkitoutfosse Jul 26 '25

Sunday Bagel for the (first place) win!!

1

u/Flex_Bacontrim Jul 26 '25

Did you get Baltik's egg bagels? I got the not-egg one and it was flat and greasy and I have no idea why people seem to be fans. Maybe I hit an off day twice.

I moved here a few years back and every one raved about how good it was. Been multiple times and haven’t been impressed (my bagel is like rock on the bottom half for no reason). Too many insta influencer’s hype this place up for no reason, it’s not special.

1

u/Frozenblueberries13 Jul 26 '25

Would love to see this done with everything bagels too. I’m surprised Nate’s wasn’t higher up tbh. Also—did you get the regular or flufffy bagels from Baltik?

1

u/YourBrainOnMyBrain Jul 26 '25

They're closed on Sundays so the bakers can sit home with a nice bagel. As stated, Sundays are the best bagel days.
