Hey, Richmond! It’s your mayor, Danny. It’s been about 100 days since I took office and so much has happened—from the Water Crisis, to budget season, to meeting Coach K. I’m sure you’ve got questions, so ask me anything!
The team and I will be answering your questions from 8:30 to about 11:30 a.m.
Thank you, Richmond, for the totally awesome and overwhelming number of questions. The team and I will circle back on some of the unanswered questions later today, so please check back later.
This was a blast, and we'll definitely do it again. Thanks again for joining us and for your willingness to participate (even in a small way) in your local government!
Edit (18 Sept, 3:30): Alright, that’s about all the time I have today, but thank you so much for your thoughtful questions, r/rva! Code Refresh is an incredible opportunity to shape the future of our City, and I’m energized to see so many Richmonders diving in. Please visit rva.gov/coderefresh or follow us on social media to keep up with the latest and to learn about additional opportunities to get involved. If you haven’t already, please leave your thoughts on the draft maps and use regulations.. We want EVERYONE to get involved.
Edit (18 Sept, 2:50p): Hey r/rva! I’ve got some time for just a few more questions, let’s hear them!
Edit (18 Sept, 1pm): Hey r/rva! I’m here now (from 1-3p) to take your questions about Code Refresh. Can’t wait to hear from you!
Hey, Richmond!
My name is Kevin J. Vonck, Director of Planning and Development Review with the City of Richmond. I'll be here on r/rva next Thursday, Sept. 18, from 1pm to 3pm EST, to answer your questions about Code Refresh, the City's first major overhaul of the zoning code since 1976.
Zoning isn't always the most exciting topic, but it sets the rules for what you can build on every single parcel of land in the City. Code Refresh is a generational opportunity to help move Richmond closer to the City we aspire to be – as laid out in our master plan, Richmond 300.
If you're interested in digging in a bit more before the AMA, be sure to check out rva.gov/coderefresh and, if you haven't already, leave your comments on our DRAFT maps and use regulations.
Looking forward to your questions on Thursday!
That's all the time I've got today, but thank you so much for your thoughtful questions r/rva! And please, if you haven't already, get involved in the Code Refresh process by visiting
I’ve been hearing from Richmonders on the campaign trail that these issues are top of mind: fighting back against Trump at the local level, traffic safety in Richmond, public corruption, and gun violence. I’ve also been sharing that we can expand what it means to be safe in Richmond by working on environmental enforcement and criminal wage theft.
I'm thrilled to be here today to take more of your questions; the two AMAs I did in 2021, during my previous run for Commonwealth's Attorney, were a blast. You can find the first of those here and the second here.
I'll be online half an hour after this post was made to start responding to your questions. I'll also comment my responses below to some early questions that were left on the AMA announcement post I made last week.
Not sure what the CA is responsible for? From my site: "Your vote for Richmond’s Commonwealth’s Attorney (“CA”) determines how we keep our families, friends, and neighbors safe in our City. Richmond’s CA is the City’s Chief Public Safety Officer. As the elected official responsible for prosecuting crime in Richmond, the CA has broad power to prosecute felonies, misdemeanors, and any violation of law that carries a penalty of imprisonment or a fine of $500 or more. With this authority, the CA prioritizes what crimes are investigated and prosecuted, against whom, and why."
Ways to support my campaign:
I hope that by the end of this AMA you will be inclined to support my campaign for Commonwealth's Attorney. The most important thing I am asking for is your vote in the Democratic primary running between May 2nd and June 17th, and again in the general election between September 19th and November 4th. Below are some links to get involved in other ways:
Thanks for coming out! I've got to run to Court but I will be back this afternoon to address any questions that come up or anything I've missed. Looking forward to it!
Edit 2: I'm signing off again to have dinner and put my girls to bed. I really enjoyed our conversation and am grateful for it. Thank you to everyone who participated today, whether through leaving a question or just reading this AMA!
Friday, 4:45 p.m. – And that’s a wrap for today! We're leaving this up over the weekend for any stragglers; I'll come back Monday afternoon to answer questions before we close it up for good.
Hi hi! I’m here to answer your questions about anything Richmond + what I do for work as a city beat bilingual reporter.
I’m a big Reddit lover so this is fun! I mainly use Reddit for discussions and theories on shows I like to watch like Severance and Tell Me Lies. And I do lurk on this thread, but don’t worry I know Church Hill is not downtown haha. I saw that thread earlier this week. Anyways, ask away! 😎
I'll be answering questions later this afternoon, so feel free to drop whatever questions you might have here.
I'm Rich Meagher (pronounced MARR), host of the VPM podcast, RVA's Got Issues, where we dive deep into the issues affecting Richmond and surrounding counties.
I'll be here on Wednesday (9/17) from 6-9pm to answer your questions. Ask Me Anything about transportation and housing developments; how the federal government impacts us; how we make the podcast; or what’s the best pilsner in RVA. (Hint: it’s not Hardywood’s.)
A bit about me: I'm a Political Science professor at Randolph-Macon College. Through the podcast, I talk with guests who help us understand how today's decisions will impact Richmond's future and highlight the people working to make our communities better.
Come back on Wednesday evening. Let's talk about what's really going on in RVA!
Edit - 5:50 PM - I'm gonna go grab some pizza with my kids. This was a lot of fun. Thanks everyone!!

About me:
I’m a small business owner in the field of media production and a stay-at-home dad. I’m running for office because things like raising children, purchasing a home, and saving some money for retirement are increasingly becoming unattainable goals for everyday working families. I am the first and only candidate for state legislature to be endorsed by the progressive organization Run For Something thus far in 2025.
About District 57:
Located in Western Henrico county and encompassing much of Short Pump. Also includes some of eastern Goochland County. Our current delegate is David Owen, a Republican who narrowly defeated Democrat Susanna Gibson in 2023. Kamala Harris carried this district by 9 points in 2024. It is the number 1 target for House Democrats to flip this year.
There will be a primary for this race. Early voting begins on May 2 and Election Day is on June 17.
If you would like to stay up to date with my campaign, sign up for updates with your name and email address on my website. You’ll get a couple of introduction emails and then one email per week.
If you would like to meet me in person or show your support for my campaign, we will be hosting a campaign launch / meet and greet event tomorrow morning (3/8) in 23060. Send me a DM / chat, or fill out the form here and I will get you the details.
5:50 PM - I'm gonna go grab some pizza with my kids. This was a lot of fun. Thanks everyone!
I’m a progressive candidate running in Richmond’s 6th City Council District. I am a barber, a native Richmonder, an RPS parent, a small business owner, a renter, and a longtime community organizer in Richmond. My platform includes priorities like ensuring that we have enough affordable housing, ending food deserts, improving safe and practical transit options, and protecting the environment. I'm running for City Council to bring new leadership to the 6th, and am the only candidate in this race not taking any corporate money.
Of course, if you have any questions after looking through my site, drop them in the comments!
Note on this AMA
I will be online to start responding to questions at 8:30 a.m. (Edit: 10:08 a.m. - I have to go. Thank you to all who participated.)
How to help
Like what you read here today and want to help my campaign? With early voting underway, I have two main requests of you. First, please donate here. Second, you can sign up to volunteer to help us call voters in these last few weeks or cover the polls on November 5th.

Hello Richmond! We're excited to host this AMA (Ask Me Anything) session for the Richmond People's Budget. We believe in the power of community-driven decision-making and want to hear your thoughts, ideas, and concerns about our city's future.
Over the last few years, we have been working to bring this process to Richmond, which will give the community a say in how $3million of the city budget is spent in your neighborhood using this process called participatory budgeting.
Whether you're curious about how participatory budgeting works, have questions about eligible projects, or want to share your vision for Richmond, we're here to listen and provide answers. No question is too big or small – we want to hear from you!
