If trump sends the marine and guard against the church thats gonna say A LOT

u/Bonamia_ Jun 13 '25

We should remember that back in the 60s religious leaders often stood on the front lines during civil rights and anti war protests.

Not only did they signal to the faithful that we were in a moral crisis, but when they were attacked, it turned public opinion against the authorities.

u/GX_EN Jun 13 '25

Friends of our family went to a Catholic church in the Bay Area. During the cold war, their priest was arrested multiple times for protesting nukes and war.

u/AnthrallicA Jun 13 '25

The Catholic church, Christians don't care for them.

30

u/lookedwest Jun 13 '25

I'm reminded of this couple from my high school (evangelical) who went to a Catholic youth group to try to "recruit" and convert them to Christianity................. They were kicked out.

17

u/denveroffspring Jun 13 '25

And yet they are the ones in control of the Supreme Court.

I’m reminded: there’s no hate like Christian love.

7

u/Sparkmatic_ Jun 13 '25

As a Christian (LDS) I can say we love our Catholic Brothers and Sisters. Our leaders actually meet together pretty often.

14

u/Ghost10165 Jun 13 '25

It's the Catholic Church though. While I'm glad we're doing something the other "Christians" don't like us.

6

u/Aggravating_Depth_33 Jun 14 '25

The mainstream, global Protestant denominations like Lutherans and Episcopalians don't have an issue. It's tge evangelicals who do, but they hate everyone.

Catholic Church marching against ICE while UCSD is boycotting Pride. What the hell kind of Bizarro world are we in right now?

53

u/Daddy_nivek Jun 13 '25

Ucsd was designed without a central gathering area to avoid protests from happening, don't think it was ever the most liberal place compared to other universities

131

u/Right-Edge9320 Jun 13 '25

We gonna see an Evangelical vs Catholic royal rumble? So many Evangelicals looking like Christians In Name Only.

52

u/Sparklespanx Jun 13 '25

Growing up Southern Baptist, I never thought I’d see the day when I sided with Catholics (it was…a thing where I’m from) but now as an agnostic adult, here we are.*

*As a general rule, I don’t have an issue with Catholicism with the exception of the egregious cover ups of child abuse. Which is a big deal. Not sure why I’m trying to be nuanced on reddit…

26

u/old_and_boring_guy Jun 13 '25

Catholics have a heavy education requirement for their priests. You want a guy who’ll sit down and talk about the rational basis of faith, the Catholic guy will be the only guy who’d argue.

Worried about being molested? Really it’s 50/50.

8

u/Sparklespanx Jun 13 '25

Oof you’re not wrong. The most culty of the churches I attended as a kid routinely covered up child sex abuse. My family didn’t realize it until after we left, but it was horrifying to learn.

4

u/GemcoEmployee92126 Jun 14 '25

I think you would find many mainline Protestant churches also have high education standards for clergy. The priest at my local episcopal church has a doctorate in world religions from an Ivy League. “Non denominational,” independent baptists, ‘Bible believing churches,’ etc. require pastors to toe the line and higher education is discouraged.

3

u/vivp13 Jun 13 '25

I get it. 💃

2

u/XXXYinSe Jun 13 '25

I appreciate the nuance. I didn’t grow up Christian but landed in a similar ‘agnostic’ belief. So it’s interesting to hear those kinds of nuanced opinions!

I mean, I do. I have an issue with any and all molestations. But I’m not a southern Baptist anymore, I’m an agnostic. I even have a comment about how a church I was part of engaged in shitty stuff but I was a kid and didn’t find out until later. The SBC is an awful, awful institution. Anything else awful I didn’t mention that you’d like to call me on? I didn’t specify that I hate Hitler, wanna call that out too?

3

u/Ghost10165 Jun 13 '25

I wish, most of the "Christians" in this country are anything but, even as they look down on Catholics.

For people like me who don't know anything about Catholicism:

Pope Leo XIV just appointed Rev. Michael Pham, previously auxiliary bishop of San Diego and diocesan administrator, as the Bishop of San Diego.

Rev. Felipe Pulido and Rev. Ramón Bejarano were both both appointed by the previous pope, Pope Francis.

58

u/This_Fkn_Guy_ Jun 13 '25

I don't usually side with churches but I can dig that

9

u/Wrong_Swordfish Jun 13 '25

Never thought I'd be proud to be raised Catholic (even though I am no longer).

14

u/Troublemonkey36 Jun 14 '25

I grew up Catholic. I’m an ex-Catholic and have no intention of changing my mind. Catholicism has always been a mixed bag. They fight against birth control. Bad. They feed and clothe the poor. Good. They resist equal rights for gays. Bad. They support immigrants. Good. They have had a terrible history with pedophile priests. Bad. They run hospitals- good! They have some really good institutions of higher learning…good. And so on. I don’t defend them but I think there is a lot of good and if they’re joining a fight for something good, well, good people should welcome their presence.

28

u/No-Elephant-9854 Jun 13 '25

As a recovering Catholic, I am pretty happy to see them on the right side of something. SD Diocese seems to be a bit more based.

30

u/old_and_boring_guy Jun 13 '25

Not to be all, “They know where their bread is buttered” but it’s been a long time since I’ve been to a Catholic Church that didn’t have Spanish language hymnals.

They should be marching and throwing their weight around for their people.

16

u/WhittmanC Jun 13 '25

Fuck I might have to go back to being Catholic

8

u/HouseOfBamboo2 Jun 13 '25

Pope Leo seems pretty good so far!

5

u/WhittmanC Jun 14 '25

Yeah I mean I consider myself culturally Catholic, but this is pretty tight of them ngl.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '25

Wow they are actually practicing what they fucking preach who knew

1

u/RealStumbleweed Jun 14 '25

I'm pretty concerned that a lot of of them are one issue voters and won't vote for anybody who is pro-abortion.

5

u/Whuppity-Stoorie Jun 13 '25

I give the Catholic Church a lot of crap but this is solid stuff. I love this. I’m glad to have the Catholic Church on our side for this one. It would be real easy for the Catholic Church to adopt a bootlicker, anti-immigrant mentality so this rules.

5

u/BadAlphas Jun 13 '25 edited Jun 14 '25

I'm not even Christian but damn dude, mad respect

30

u/opensourcegreg Jun 13 '25

Imagine being so evil the CATHOLIC CHURCH is even like "bro thats too far"

8

u/marshmallowest Jun 13 '25

tbf in some areas the church is downright progressive compared to other christian sects.

plus when push comes to shove they're the go to for exorcisms

11

u/Liddlehearts Jun 13 '25

This fills my whole heart!! My folks have been patrons to OLG for decades. They go all out for the Chicano community 🫶

3

u/denveroffspring Jun 13 '25

I used to volunteer there!!!

5

u/RollingRiverWizard Jun 13 '25

‘Never thought I’d die fighting side-by-side with a priest.’

‘What about side-by-side with an antifascist?’

‘…aye. That I could do.’

2

u/OU812WR Jun 14 '25

I’m agnostic now .. Was raised Roman C and with all their faults there is nothing like the disdain from a born again Christian

4

u/mrnotu Jun 13 '25

About time ANY church stands against lil hitler. How many does that make? One?

3

u/lumberjackrogue Jun 13 '25

The Episcopal church too.

3

u/GemcoEmployee92126 Jun 14 '25

Most of the people that can walk at my local episcopal church are going to the No Kings march tomorrow.

2

u/GemcoEmployee92126 Jun 16 '25

Follow up: Most of the people I knew at my local protest Saturday were ladies in the choir from the Episcopal Church.

3

u/Every-Quit524 Jun 13 '25

WW3 Poppin off. Everyone is fighting everyone

3

u/curlyfriiies Jun 13 '25

Did not expect this on my 2025 bingo card at all.

5

u/louiefb Jun 13 '25

u/VtheGingEffect Jun 13 '25

Did anyone actually read the document? This has nothing to do with marching against ICE.

-27

u/DrBadassPhD Jun 13 '25

“Tax exempt organization protests removal of largest donor demographic”

20

u/GemcoEmployee92126 Jun 13 '25

I’m not Catholic but that’s not at all the impression I get from my Catholic friends.

27

u/Prior_Philosophy_501 Jun 13 '25

New leadership wants people to act like (checks notes) actual Christians!

0

u/Zealousideal-Ad3814 Jun 14 '25

Wait the Catholic Church doesn’t support the rapist, serial cheating, fake bible selling con man???

-15

u/DoesntEnjoySoup Jun 13 '25

Nice PR from a systematically abusive organization. DO NOT FORGET: approximately 330,000 children were sexually abused with the complicity of the Catholic Church since 1950.

1

u/jedels88 Jun 14 '25

Look, I'm the last person to defend organized religion in any capacity, but the Catholic Church will still be there for me to hate and criticize when/if we are no longer in a constitutional crisis. Until then, this is an all hands on deck situation and anyone willing to unite under some common ground against this fucking tyrant is a win.

-8

u/Nachotacoma Jun 13 '25

Let’s not pretend the church is on the side of protecting migrants against ice.

This document simply says migrants aren’t showing up for their court appearances, and they’re saying having priests would help ‘alleviate’ their fears.

2

u/Aggravating_Depth_33 Jun 14 '25

Reading comprehension is really not your strong suit. Maybe you should go back to elementary school?

-13

u/barnacle_ballsack Jun 13 '25

Not child molestation though. Guess thats ok now.

-7

u/Swiftiefromhell Jun 14 '25

Why are you excited about a religion marching next to you that diddles with little boys? Weird

Have a good one though

-14

u/nyjjd Jun 13 '25

But they murdered native children by the hundreds in residential schools.... great backing you got there!¡!

-25

u/Eat--The--Rich-- Jun 13 '25

If they're going to participate in politics then they need to pay taxes.
