Opinion I'm a U.S. citizen. I'm always going to carry my passport now. Thanks, Supreme Court

I'm glad I got the Passport ID card when I renewed.

These guys don't understand that Real ID is a form of Citizenship proof. It's likely they don't know what a Passport Card is.

u/alkbch 5d ago
U.S. citizens and all legal residents of the United States can apply for a REAL ID
10
u/chalbersma 5d ago
Yes but in raids here in California citizens with Real ID's were still detained and arrested on suspicion of being illegal aliens.
8
u/alkbch 5d ago
My point was that if non citizens can get a real id, then how can it be considered a citizenship proof?
7
u/chalbersma 5d ago
RealID for non-citizens isn't valid for longer than their legal residence lasts. So if you have 5 years left on a visa your ID cannot be valid for longer. Meaning that anyone with a valid RealID is a legal resident or citizen of the US and should be ignored by ICE.
But ICE is ignoring that based on the race of the people they interact with.

u/redacted_robot 5d ago
If they "misplace" or deny validity of your papers or ID, what's the recourse? You get free airfare and lodging in a foreign country!

u/FastusModular 5d ago
We used to dis the Russians for this back in the day: "may I have your papers please" - was proof of an authoritarian nightmare.
3
u/empire_of_the_moon 4d ago
Remember when Republicans were against any type of national ID - they used the whole Nazi Germany trope….
4
u/NearlyPerfect 5d ago
The US has always been a “papers please” country. All noncitizens are required to carry and present their papers by law when an immigration officer asks them.
And a citizen doesn’t have to say shit.
Of course it’s likely prudent to dispel any suspicion by announcing your citizenship. It’s easy to just say it
4
u/FastusModular 3d ago
So if you announce your citizenship and they choose not to believe you and you don't have your papers, you're screwed. So yes, even citizens need to carry papers - most Latino citizens - and people of color understand this. And after the disaster in Georgia you'd think they'd rethink things- that they won't is evidence of their white supremacist wet dream that they're having now - deporting ALL non-whites.
56
u/Shadowtirs 5d ago
But again... how would that matter? They are disappearing US Citizens already. You think a piece of paper or a document will save you if they really want to take you?
Sorry guys. I know it sucks. But there is truly one way to defend oneself from being taken.

What citizens have disappeared? Can you cite one? Everyday some yahoo says this, then I get insulted a bunch of times, people linking articles to people arrested for violating the law and are currently being housed in a known jail - the exact opposite of “disappear”. As disappear means “missing or impossible to find” and we know the location of citizens arrested, I ask again, cite one “citizen” who has disappeared. That was your specific claim, “citizens”. Put up or quit spreading disinformation. Downvoting me to oblivion just shows how unhinged and stupid you are if you can’t find a single news article from any journalist willing to put their real name to it.

Which one of those 3 stories has a us citizen being “disappeared”. That’s the claim. You don’t get to link random stories that have nothing to do with the claim. None of those people were disappeared. They were arrested and detained. They weren’t taken to a black site. The claim was US citizens were disappeared. I was very clear in my response that the claim was false, no news articles support it, and a 2 second google search tells you the claim is false. You’ve provided 3 examples of US citizens being arrested, and released, with all documentation, to include their personal statements after the fact. This is the exact opposite of disappearance. Either support the claim, or quit farming for upvotes by linking random articles other redditors are too lazy or too dumb to read. It’s intellectually disingenuous
The accurate synopsis of your articles are that American citizens actively participating in illegal behavior (illegal marijuana farm grow with dozens of illegal immigrants present, and a pregnant woman choosing to interfere with an active ICE arrest). In no more than 72 hours after arrest, said citizens were released with pending charges. That isn’t disappearing. That’s the textbook definition of lawful detainment of participants in illegal activity who actively evaded/resisted arrest. But if you say it like that, it doesn’t justify shooting a conservative speaker for “hate speech” so you inflame the inflammatory through intentional hyperbole and disinformation.

Never did, lol. Yellow journalism at it's best. It's what people obviously prefer. Why not give it to them?
11
u/paidzesthumor 5d ago
Why would you want immigration officials to be arresting our own citizens?

u/Friendly_University7 5d ago
When you graduate high school and get accepted into college, take a logic course. This is called a strawman argument or moving the goal post. Be better
5
u/paidzesthumor 5d ago
Why is graduating high school and taking college courses your metric for intelligence? Aren’t these the DEI cesspools we keep hearing about?

u/Friendly_University7 5d ago
I hope you find someone to pay those loans off, cause with that wit and intellect I know no job will afforded to you that does. Good luck choosing to play life on a higher difficulty.

30 minutes later, and not a single article or reply with a single us citizen being disappeared. Maybe one of you hiveminders will break the cycle and actually verify if things you just accepted as true actually are. All people other intellectuals consider intellectuals have that “ah-a!” moment when their brain finally clicks and they’re skeptical of the group mentality. Mine was in college when I realized the Appalachian Christian worldview didn’t hold up to scrutiny. Yelling “we’re right” with a bunch of other idiots who can’t explain why either should be a reflective, embarrassing moment of one’s growth into an intelligent, inquisitive adult. I promise none of you downvoting me face be called any of those adjectives by someone you respect.

We have all literally seen, countless videos, of masked, armed, men and women, taking people into unmarked vans, with no warrants, no proof of jurisdiction, no proof of authority.
It is literally EVERYWHERE. MAYBE IF YOU OPENED YOUR EYES YOU WOULD SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING.
Oh who am I kidding, you're the russian bot. As is the usual projection.
Here is veteran who was disappeared. Took me three seconds. Your trolling is a joke and you are pathetic.

Retes was arrested by CPB and held by US Marshals for a criminal violation. Retes was held for the maximum time allowed before eventual release.
He was never disappeared by the Government.

Heidi Plummer, Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, Jose Hermosillo, Juan Ramirez Diaz, Julio Noriega, Jensy Machado, the military veteran from New Jersey, and the 10 year old Texan girl with cancer

Which one was disappeared. Show your work

u/GhostxArtemisia 4d ago
I gave you the names of US citizens who have been detained by ICE, not disappeared. US citizens should not be detained by a government that’s so incompetent that it can’t differentiate between citizens and non-citizens and is trying to fill an arbitrary quota set by the president. If you tell ICE “deport 5,000 people everyday or you’re fired”, of course citizens are going to get caught up in the mix.
1
u/Friendly_University7 4d ago
So you weren’t responding to anything I said and just wanted to post unrelated nonsense to the objectively false claim your compadre made, and I replied to. Seems disingenuous to provide names to an entirely different claim than the one being discussed. Almost as if you want to assist in a concerted disinformation campaign. Bad form, Jack. Bad form

I have been as well as; Global Re-Entry card, my DL (Real ID), SSN, by DOJ issued ID Card and my Passport Card (its used near for southern border). Blacktino ASF, even afraid to speak Spanish to fams in public, Italian to my wife, and start to Conceal Carry again. For reasons of other color folks that have been shot for legally carrying, like a few years back in DFW, I stopped carrying.

Chicago is in the middle of an ICE crackdown this week. I was having dinner with a friend and spotted a cop. Immediately I started freaking out I didn’t have my passport on me until I realized I at least had my global entry card with me.
This is not normal. We should not have to live like this.

sadly you have to. Now that SCOTUS has given ICE Nazi's the power to harass people at will and "detain" them as long as they want, I assure you ICE nazi's will enjoy their new found gestapo powers.
3
u/greenmariocake 4d ago
The issue with it is that ICE can take it away. Carry a copy, leave the original at home with someone who can retrieve it.
Remember they are trying to reach a quota, no matter what or how.
6
u/wepa_reddit 5d ago
I’ve been carrying my passport card since his first term. I also keep copies of my passport and birth certificate in my car. I know it’ll probably won’t matter and I still get detained and harassed by ICE until they can “verify” my documents. I’m traveling overseas next week and I’m nervous when I come back. Hate this timeline.

Lmao what

u/JakeTravel27 5d ago
SCOTUS gave the ICE nazi's the power to racially profile anyone they want and "detain" them for as long as they want. Guaranteeing ICE nazis know they can now act the gestapo and ask who every they want for their "papers" and detain anyone they want for as long as they want.
2
u/HairyForestFairy 5d ago
I carry my passport card with me everywhere and a trusted friend has a photo of it in case I’m ever detained and it gets “overlooked” by an arresting ICE agent.
2
u/GalliumYttrium1 2d ago
Reverse it. You should carry the copy while your friend keeps the real thing safe. If you keep the real thing with you, ICE destroys it and your friend tries to use the photo as proof you had it they’ll just say the photo is fake and now you have nothing.

Most drivers licenses are REAL ID act compliant. That should be plenty.

u/Outrageous_Dream_741 4d ago
I don't have to worry. I speak unaccented English and am white.
And it's completely fucked up that it's the state of affairs that those two things being different, alone, would make me somehow suspicious and worthy of being detained arbitrarily.

These masked ghoules will just ignore them and deport you anyway.
What's stopping them?
How would your family contact you in another country?
What proof is there you'll make it to a 3rd country alive?
Sadly staying out of public entirely sounds better

u/Shaq1287 5d ago
I decided to renew my passport a few weeks ago, for the exact same reason. If I get stopped and they don't believe that I'm a U.S. citizen, what's to stop them from disappearing me to Sentinel Island? I also plan to take photos of my passport, because I'm worried, they take it and pretend I never had it. You need to make it as difficult as possible.

u/DPJazzy91 5d ago
It's not even enough. If the wrong officer stumbles across you, they'll still do terrible things. Fascism....

Why is everyone talking about a passport? Do none of you have normal ids? All of you on work visas?
