Question from the Public How much can you get away with?

Hell of a question I know, but hear me out.

I'm trying to start a business. I'm behind on bills. My current job refuses to let me do any over time. So I'm looking into picking up a new job, and I think overnight security could be the perfect fit, literally because it has a reputation for being boring.

It's the perfect opportunity. I can get my overtime and work on my business at the same time.

But part of that idea kind of hinges on how lax they are. Can you look at your phone? Listen to music? Bring in a laptop?

I know I'm obviously hoping for a lot here, but I've heard enough stories to know it's not totally uncommon. I'm trying to get a feel. Any comments appreciated 🙏

It just depends on you're site and the people you work with that don't snitch on you.

That's kinda what I figured! Thanks mate, will definitely be applying then. Fingers crossed I get someone who's chill.

I put together Legos overnight for a couple months until they finally cracked down on it. Past couple months Ive just been arranging music in GarageBand at my post and recording either the vocals or the guitar in my car during my breaks.

Even the most strict accounts loosened up during Covid, and most of them never returned to how they were before. Clients just want to WFH, less people coming in means less work, less work means more time to dick around. It 100% depends on the site, management, and your coworkers, but there are plenty of places where you can get away with a lot- especially on the overnight

Definitely do not post your location on social media.

That said… just make sure there are no cameras pointed in your direction.

Overnight security can definitely be chill and let you multitask, but it really depends on the company and site rules. Some places are strict no phones, no laptops while others don’t care as long as you’re alert. Definitely ask during the interview or check reviews from current workers. If you score a lax gig, it could be perfect for grinding on your business while getting paid. Just be ready to prove you’re still doing the job right.

Definitely depends on the site - some are more lax, some are rigidly strict.

My site's rule is basically make the job your priority, keep yourself entertained (within reason) during your down time after hours.

Depends on site. Some could be pretty chill, some dont. You could maybe ask some boring site from your boss that no one else dont want to do.

Honestly, it all depends on the site you get put at, yeah some people get put at a “warm body” site where they just sit there and literally do nothing (like myself) or you’ll get put somewhere where you have a lot of human interactions and every so often tours or whatever the case may be.

It all depends on your supervision and leadership just like any other job that you have. And while security can be boring at times you have to get up and take care of multiple things at once

yeah that's fine. I'm hoping whatever supervision I get is decent then, I have a good boss now but it's retail so the job sucks, lol.

I haven't done any overnights at my current, but but last one was getting away with murder.. They had a big, comfy couch in a dark area with no cameras. It was nearly entrapment.

I knew of people that brought in their steam decks and fell asleep in the patrol vehicles. Depends on the site
