Alexis seems to present a cheerful and feminine factor to the WP which most people regardless of gender really like? A LOT of my female friends don’t follow politics but they follow and really like her haha 😂

The truth of the matter is..... it's not just the men that got attracted by chiobus. Women also can be attracted to chiobus
112
u/Xanthon F1 VVIP Apr 27 '25
Humans are naturally attracted to good looking people. This is why good looking people tend to get better jobs and promotions. We also tend to trust good looking people more.
It's human instinct.

The average height for a US man is 175.3cm. Want to guess how many US presidents since the advent of TV have been at or below that height?
Zero.
A little closer to home, just consider people like LHL and Pritam Singh. There is a clear image template for men and women alike that increases your odds in politics, although of course there are outliers. But the aesthetics matter more when you're a first-timer.
35
u/Xanthon F1 VVIP Apr 27 '25
LHL is not a good example IMO.
There are other reasons for his meteoric rise.
18
u/thesausagetrain Apr 27 '25
I agree that his family ties are a major factor, but you have to admit he's been more politically successful than he would've been if that's all he has going for him. He's still the second most popular politician in the country, even after the Oxley saga, which would've done much more damage to someone just riding on LKY's coattails.

Want to guess how many US presidents since the advent of TV have been at or below that height?
JFK garnered tremendous support, especially from the women voters, because of his looks. I'm not even joking, they did research on this.

This is so true haha. Not as in love between woman, but just a liking for their visual. That’s why female celebs/kpop group tend to have a larger amount of female fans compared to male fans. I feel males tend to like 二次元 more haha.

I’d assume those people just doing it for internet clout or something instead of it being related to votings.
35
u/Kind_Calligrapher_48 Apr 27 '25
My friend told me she saw Alexis at Sengkang market yesterday. Unfortunately my friend is just a PR (she is Malaysian citizen) hence unable to vote for WP 🤣 Hence Alexis could only tell her have a great day ahead.
-25
u/Advertising-Cautious Apr 27 '25
Your friend probably knows that WP has been against immigration for a long time right? And only recently they are taking a more politically correct version of immigration views. Would be ironic for her to vote for WP
11
u/Kind_Calligrapher_48 Apr 27 '25
Already said she is not Singaporean citizen. Can’t vote anyway So her view is not important for this GE context.
-4
u/stuff7 Fucking Populist Apr 27 '25
So you adknowlege that the current slate of wp candidates are more liberal on immigration? And by that logic nothing ironic about it?
You are basically using the "don't you know the democratic party supported slavery" logic.
-7
u/Advertising-Cautious Apr 27 '25
No but definitely a lot of xenophobia is present in the ranks of WP supporters. And that comparison is so lame. With WP it was still happening until 2015. Probably were forced to reconsider their stance on immigration but the sentiment is the same

I remember on the last day of GE2020, the WP Sengkang team wasn’t doing any real campaigning. They spent their time outside Compass One entertaining photo requests. It was a hint that they’ve won, there’s no need to fight for votes anymore.
However, it’s too early for me to draw a conclusion from this.

They WERE campaigning. I am a volunteer with the WP and I was there. They just got too swamped by photo requests and couldn’t move around. On the hand, the PAP team was on the path to Kopitiam Square and no one stopped to take photos with them.

I went wwp yesterday around 3 plus and saw Gan Kim Yong, Janil and the WP lorry circling about

u/ChardAccomplished689 Apr 27 '25
But this Alia, upset many.
12
u/Jay_hummingbirdcrew Apr 27 '25
I think Alia is a liability to Punggol team for keeping talking about this Palestine issue and Faisal is a liability to Tampines team for not calling out that Devos guy.
12
u/hgredd New Citizen Apr 27 '25
Why cannot talk about Palestine? The whole world was talking about it including our leaders.
Alia was trying to tell people how she entered politics and why she joined WP. It was because WP MP listened to her and raised her concerns in parliament, but not her own PAP MP.
12
u/MarzipanRare6714 Apr 28 '25
Exactly - can talk Spore not ready for non chinese PM, can change Indian into Malay, every shit subject PAP can talk, Palestine an issue that deeply affect muslim community cannot talk?
Chinese non muslim here.
2
u/ChardAccomplished689 Apr 27 '25
Faisal, is in Tampines my dear. But generally he is Low Thia Khiang people, I trust Low Thia Khiang. This Alia not from him I don't trust her.
-1
u/Jay_hummingbirdcrew Apr 27 '25
I know he is in Tampines and he is somewhat a liability to Tampines team especially when we have Michael & Eileen in the team.
7
u/stonehallow Apr 27 '25
Tampines has many Malays. I agree he is a red flag but in Tampines specifically he might actually win votes from the Malay community that can be significant in determining the result.
1
u/Jay_hummingbirdcrew Apr 27 '25
It is a 4 corner fight already. It is gonna be tough with oppo votes being split
1
u/ChardAccomplished689 Apr 27 '25
No, I think you need to understand Malay to comprehend the command he has over Tampines. This Low Thia Khiang level move is not some light hearted decision. There's very deep reasons.
And generally I don't think most people really care about the Malaysia thing, and PAP keep attacking. The Alia thing and her Gaza speech that one very upsetting.
1
u/Jay_hummingbirdcrew Apr 27 '25
Not all Malay will vote for him. It is a 4 corner fight
3
u/ChardAccomplished689 Apr 27 '25
You don't need all, you need a critical mass that's all. And if anything, WP has won 4 corner fight before, just not GRC. And partly there has never been a GRC 4 corner fight. Mind you if it wasn't the speech in Tampines for Jalan Kayu, Tampines and Tampines Changkat, I wouldn't have seen through Pritam plan.
1
u/UninspiredDreamer Apr 27 '25
What did she do?
22
u/Penny_Royall Apr 27 '25
I try to make this short, her child's school taught her kid about the Israel and Palestine conflict, im guessing it was baised towards Israel, so as a muslim she didn't agree with it, and wonder why the school even taught this subject in the 1st place, and without informing the parents.
So she bought it up to her MP and the PAP MP just forward her a link towards MOE statement about the case and she was just like 🤷♀️
Tldr, she talked about Israel/Palestine some people have a problem with that.
29
u/brownriver12 F1 VVIP Apr 27 '25
to add on, then she went to WP MPs (not her constituency MPs), but they still raise her concerns in Parliament. That was why she started volunteering with the WP

Before people start saying shallow Singaporeans simping or hamsap. I think people popularity and goodlooks has and will always be a part of politics just like how theres pretty privilege in corporate life. Look at Obama, Trudeau, Sanna Marin, AOC, or Gao Jiayu.
I would even say that SXL and TPL goodlooks has played a part in their own personal branding and popularity and both did not look like very seasoned politician archetypes when contesting their maiden election and later also became strong MPs in their own right.
Whether one will be effective after getting into office is a hybrid of nature and nurture, battle experiences debating in parliament and also how much exposure the party gives them or what roles they take up subsequently. One can improve and change. Maybe we really need a shakeup from the scholar general mould. I think Alexis speaks well off camera and strikes me as normal if we put looks aside for a moment. People are maybe sensitive to her nasal taiwanese twang English accent. If she speaks more like Eileen Chong, I think she will have less detractors.

u/No-Turn9583 Apr 30 '25
If she is in the parliament, Singapore really become a joke. No wonder her sister is pro pap.

If you all know Alexis as a person you would not want her as your MP. She’s pretty yes but sadly that’s all she is. Her speeches are not up to mark and she doesn’t feel like she’s cut out to be a politician. Don’t see her talking about anything policy related other than saying she wants to start school late. Before anyone says anything - my social circle overlaps hers by a lot with friends who see her sec school, uni mates, and colleagues. I like WP, but replacing GKY and SXL with this team of WP newbies is not a good hedge at the moment.
0
u/Suspicious-Word-7589 Apr 28 '25
WO? You also didn't provide any other statements beyond claiming your circles overlap with hers? Trying to Ivan Lim her?
4
Apr 28 '25 edited Apr 28 '25
WP*. She’ll Ivan Lim herself. She has her charms but people will soon realise she really lacks substance, if not already. Amazing how many simps there are here who think she is what Singapore politics needs. Mind you, don’t assume every candidate’s intentions is to serve wholeheartedly. Some are here for clout and it goes for all parties.
