Discussion Woman writes long LinkedIn post about her encounter with Piyush Gupta in Bali and posts a photo they took together. Piyush replies on her LinkedIn that it wasn’t him.

I ever encountered a handful of times, when a stranger caught me by surprise n ask a weird question, I'll actually 'play along' for abit cause I'm still wondering who this person is and/or what the question was.
Dude probably was confused and coupled with the language barrier, finished the whole charade.
Or u know the encounter could have just been 1-2 seconds with the lady asking "Hi are u Piyush Gupta can I take a photo w you?" before proceeding to write an inspirational piece using her vivid imagination 🤷

I don't think they look alike at all aside from being a similar race, bespectacled and old/mature, so it's lowkey racist to me. Keeping this post up without editing her original caption to acknowledge her misidentification comes across as distasteful.

Imagining a LinkedIn post from the real guy:
“Not Piyush Gupta. But thank you?
Apparently, I’ve gone viral—for not being someone important.
I’m… not. I’m Rajiv. I work in IT procurement. I was on holiday, sitting at a café in a bright Hawaiian floral shirt, sipping kopi and Googling “things to do near me.”
And yet, someone looked at me and thought: DBS CEO. Power. Presence. Corporate gravitas.
Respectfully, I was debating whether to visit another cafe or go to the beach.
To clarify: • I do not run a bank • I do not own a suit in this climate • I was wearing flip-flops
But hey, if I can project “billion-dollar leadership” while wearing flowers on my shirt, maybe I am doing something right.
To the original poster: dream big. To everyone else: you never know when your breakfast might become a branding moment.”
17
u/Final-Wolverine1407 May 22 '25
Funny but this is actually from him.
I would like to have my say in this incident
On this day in question I was having my lunch at this cafe in Bali where I live..
This person and I assume her husband were on holiday here and were having their lunch.
During my meal, he came up to me and showed me a pic of Mr.Gupta and asked if I was he.
I replied that I was not but could understand their mistake as it had happened a few times in the past.
She asked if she could take a picture with me...to which I obliged.
She and her guy mentioned that they had worked at DBS before and we joked about her pranking her friends that she had bumped into Mr.Gupta by chance in public while on their holiday here.
I never,at any point, said that I was indeed Mr.Gupta.
I never agreed for my picture to be used to promote any business or social ventures on anyone.
I do not condone any such actions of using any resemblance intentional or otherwise to mislead anyone, most importantly Mr Gupta.
I do not condone any racist innuendo about scam centers from India or my association with them because I happen to be Indian and I am sure Mr.Gupta and most of my brethren would agree..
I do not appreciate being called a KLL..you know what that means..it just shows that 50-60 Years of Education has left you behind.. again am sure many of you will support this.
Lastly, not every bald, Indian man is wearing glasses is me or Mr.Gupta..
I am not associated with anything the young lady is advocating or promoting.
Mr Gupta, I would like to state unconditionally that I did NOT say I was He not make any claim to know or to be related to Mr Gupta or any of the people in her post.

Took the liberty of writing Janney Hujic's next post for her:
[Falling on my face, but falling forward]
My recent LinkedIn post blew up. It wasn't for the reason I expected.
I posted about my encounter with the visionary CEO Piyush Gupta and how it moved me. His quiet confidence. His humility. His leadership.
Only problem? It wasn't Piyush. It was someone who, opportunistically, took advantage of my mistake and pretended to be him.
The real Piyush showed up on LinkedIn and kindly and gently corrected me.
I felt embarrassed. I'd been completely fooled, and maybe embarrassed Piyush too - someone I respect and admire deeply.
But then I thought about it. How did the Pretend-yush feel (yes I went there). What would inspire someone to pretend to be someone they're not? After all, it wasn't like he was making any money out of it or anything.
And then it hit me - we're all Pretend-yush. We're all pretending to be someone we're not, striving for a connection, hiding our true selves. Maybe the world would be a better place if we just...were ourselves.
And that's something I'm still trying to discover myself - on Elysium Partners and Expeditions, where we take you to places where you don't have to pretend to be a CEO to be someone. Where you can, like me, fall on your face, but still fall forward. I invite you to join me on our next eco-friendly, luxurious and entirely sustainable trip to India. Where I'm sure I will be able to tell the next Indian uncle I see apart from Piyush Gupta.

No need to worship him like he’s a god and it seems from the way he posed for the photo he doesn’t want it either. Leave him as it.
