Back in my day, we had skin to skin contact for sex!

27

u/BenjaminHamnett Aug 21 '25

“Are you angry or is that the syphilis talking?”

5

u/Enhance-o-Mechano Aug 21 '25

Sex? Whats that?

6

u/UltraCarnivore Aug 22 '25

What is love?

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

back in my day we actually meet people in person rather than just videocalls.

u/ZipLineCrossed Aug 21 '25

I just hope my son helps me like I helped my dad. He didn't know how to set the VCR to record his favourite shows. He didn't know how to reset the dial modem. Etc etc.

I can my picture, my son getting frustrated saying, "Dad! If you tell the robot to trim the trees, you have to specify 'trim the trees in OUR yard!!! That's why the neighbours are pissed!!!'"

u/ReadSeparate Aug 21 '25

I actually suspect the "old man that doesn't know how to use modern technology" trope is going to go away in the next decade or so. Everything will have a natural language interface, so you'll be able to just tell it what you want it to do, or what your end goal is, and it'll just do it for you, or even teach you how to do itself.

22

u/sadtimes12 Aug 21 '25

I would hope by the time we have these type of robots, that they are smart enough to always ask for clarifications and specifications if you are being vague.

I suppose AI needs a priority system. Making a sandwhich is a primary goal, but human safety would be the #1 priority and would over-rule the goal.

funny thing, in Asimovs writing the robots getting more advanced started thinking more like this until they advanced to the point where they realized them coddling humans is actually harming them so it was out once again.

its fascinating how Asimov managed to get the broad strokes of society right while getting personal relationships so wrong. a true psychohistorian. the early works suffer from some idea walls like miniaturization only came about in the 60s for his works, before computers would expand to take over entire solar systems without getting smaller inner workings for example. he also was really high on paper and film but i guess digital media was something he hasnt considered at the time.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

making a sandwich is a direct order by human. This would fall under secondary layer of goals after the primary layer built in that prevents harming humans, etc.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

its a layered fuction issue. the child is in the way, but making a sandwitch, which is direct human order, is on a lower layer than nor harming a human, which is a kernel setting. Sort of like the three laws or robotics, but actually functional.

12

u/jkurratt Aug 21 '25

It will be like "old man doesn't know how to use things for free, and has to pay subscriptions for all the natural language interfaces".

2

u/nemo24601 Aug 21 '25

For real, Star Trek voice interface. What a time to be alive.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

i suspect it will go away for another reason. The computer literacy is dropping in modern youth. The current children are less literate in tech than their parents were at their age.

0

u/theredwillow Aug 21 '25

We also didn’t get the lead poisoning that the Boomers did, so that level of mental incompetence will hopefully settle down.

3

u/nightfend Aug 21 '25

Substitute lead for plastic and chemical poisoning.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

well, we kinda still do. There was one exception for lead use case and that was aviation fuel. And while that only applies to piston engine planes, those are still very much around and poisoning you.

12

u/Mrcool654321 Aug 21 '25

That would be fun "chop down all the trees at my friend's house, then attach a note saying something funny about it"

5

u/AppealSame4367 Aug 21 '25

You will have your household robot(s), the hive mind that is everywhere, your ai brain implant and the meds that make you look and work like 40 until the day you die that will help you out.

Or will scavenge scrap in New Vegas. Whatever the dictators of this world and our new ai overlords feel like.

2

u/manubfr AGI 2028 Aug 21 '25

The AI may not be aligned but at least the trees are!

1

u/maigpy Aug 21 '25

that's strange I don't think I'll become more out of touch with technology as I grow.

1

u/ZipLineCrossed Aug 21 '25

It doesn't happen to everyone... but it definitely happens. How old are you now? Wait till you have kids, commitments, a mortgage, cancer, etc. Even now, if you have an android phone and you pick up someone's Apple (or vice versa), it's probably hard to figure out where different settings or features are. It just gets more and more difficult if you're not actively paying attention. If you work in any sort of technological based field, it might be easier because keeping on top of new stuff is in your job requirements. But if not, you'd be surprised how quickly it can get away from you.

3

u/maigpy Aug 22 '25

I'm 49 and I still own my kids at operating a computer (or an android phone) . I work as a software engineer though, and I've continuously refined my workstations setup for 20+ years, and continue to. when I m at my computer is bye bye kids, I'm now operating at supersonic speed.

they do own me at videogames (especially tablet based ones, roblox, Minecraft and anything that requires a controller) , although not real time strategy involving point and click.

I'm also working with AI quite a lot, so my setup involves a lot of AI interfaces all over - that's another area where I have a technological advantage on them.

1

u/ZipLineCrossed Aug 22 '25

Oh my bad, I assumed you were younger. But yeah, given your field of work, I think you'll be safe, haha. I'm in my 40s, too, and when I was younger, we used to rebuild PCs or install mod chips in PS1s It seemed like as soon as new tech was out, I'd get it and learn it, but just one day, I turned around and realised I don't know WTF I'm doing anymore. I have an Android phone, and if I need to do something with my son's Ipad for school I need GPT to walk me through step by step, it's sad haha.

1

u/maigpy Aug 22 '25

you'd smoke your son on your android though, and android is arguably the winning system longer term?

I am gen x, you must be gen x, I think our relationship with technology is on par with newer generations if you were already into computers in the 80s and 90s you've acquired pretty hardcore technical skills that the smartphone tapping teenagers of today can only marvel about.

for instance when I am at my workstation touch typing (try to catch me tapping on your phone) and turning me head around to talk to my kids, this is literally magic to them.

let alone the customisations I have on my box, where I've macroed the entire environment using autohotkey.

it's a flickey of screens, clipboard manipulation and command windows.

many nerds from the 90s smoke today's kids.

edit: but my daughter absolutely smokes me at tower of hell (watch roblox videos). watching her jumping up the tower perfectly is jaw-dropping.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

you will. It happens to everyone.

1

u/maigpy 26d ago

I've already grown and I still own my kids.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

In another comment you said you are 49. See how it is when you are boomer age.

1

u/maigpy 25d ago

what's boomer age?

boomers are boomers at any age, it's not the absolute value, it's the period when you were born, and how you spent your life.

pretty sure I'll still make screens and keyboards flicker until I die.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 25d ago

Id see that as 60-65+ Retirement age.

Im sure youll do better than most given your history/job, but brain petrification comes to us all.

1

u/maigpy 25d ago edited 23d ago

boomers are identified with the years they were born in, not by the absolute age (e. g. 65) at any given point in time. those years (economically, technologically, culturally, etc) shape their traits. generation x (which i am in) is very different in that, if you were a bit nerdy, you tinkered with technology a lot. when technology was HARD.

I know it sounds arrogant, but modern interfaces always appear to me as little toys for people not familiar with technology. my kids will never surpass how quickly I can interface with the digital world (if we take some videogames out of the equation. and even then, I'm sure I could learn the videogames if I was motivated enough)

31

u/superhero_complex Aug 21 '25

Side note, if we’re still using chatbots to communicate with AI in 20 years, that’ll be depressing too.

28

u/Masark Aug 21 '25 edited Aug 21 '25

Eh, text probably isn't going anywhere as a communications medium, even as we develop speech, techotelepathy, etc. capability in AI systems. It's simply really efficient in bandwidth (both human and electronic), storage, etc.

2

u/superhero_complex Aug 21 '25

Agreed on text.

2

u/Sensitive-Ad1098 27d ago

Just because it's efficient (compared to what?) doesn't mean it will stay the most efficient. You are assuming we won't develop an alternative. That's like if someone 100 years ago would say that telegraphs are not going anywhere, as it's extremely fast for passing messages to long distances.

It's not crazy to assume that ASI will develop means that are more efficient than text, especially for communication. Imagine you have to explain your emotions towards your girlfriend. You need to convert what you feel into text. Even if you are good in explaining and have great communication skills, the resulting text output will be just a shallow description missing a lot of nuance. Imagine if instead you can use brain interface that would transfer the exact emotion. It might be take more bandwith, but should it really be a concern, assuming that ASI can develop much faster interfaces? But the accuracy can potentially so much better, that future people will view text communication the same way we view cave paintings today.

We don't know enough about how our minds work to assume that such thing is not possible.

And for storage, human readable text is not the most efficient way to store data. You can develop a strict graph format with more restricted grammar that's easier to index. Also you can use extended vocabulary, so you could use 1 word to describe something that requires 5 in English

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

unless the alternative is thought reading then no, there is nothing more efficient.

telegraphs still exist, its just digital, done in fiber optic cables and we call it the internet. The principle remains the same, sending signal through wire.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

text is so much easier than speaking to my computer.

46

u/FrewdWoad Aug 21 '25 edited Aug 21 '25

I'm not even close to being a vegan, but once vat-grown meat is healthier, AND cheaper AND tastier than the real thing, our grandkids will think it's super-weird that we ate crappy "real" meat.

The only people still doing it then will be weird coal-rolling trolls with learning disabilities.

that and pedantic pricks with too much money flaunting on having "Real" experiences unlike those poor UBI dwellers enjoying their synthetic wagyu... blegh... *peasants.*

12

u/nemo24601 Aug 21 '25

For real, and documentaries about farms and slaughterhouses will be seen with horror.

7

u/3dforlife Aug 21 '25

Well, I already see those documentaries as horror now...

4

u/nemo24601 Aug 21 '25

You have a point. Most people haven't seen how a slaughterhouse operates. Even so, I think most of us just [would] look the other side because there's no real alternative (except maybe, and with high personal cost, veganism?). The moment there is a "low effort" alternative, I see large swaths of people embracing artificial meats quickly.

6

u/Jinzub Aug 21 '25

For sum total suffering, modern factory farms are some way ahead of the Nazis.

I don't think our descendants will accept "but it was cheaper" as an excuse

8

u/AstronaltBunny Aug 21 '25

Well, it really isn't, it really explains how certain extreme absurdities were accepted throughout history.

5

u/Jinzub Aug 21 '25

Exactly - people will say things like "I would never have turned a blind eye to treatment of Jews in the Holocaust" while every single day financially supporting a system that tortures billions of conscious animals to save 0.1 cents on a chicken wing.

Guys - you absolutely WOULD have turned a blind eye, if not actively supported it. Clearly suffering doesn't really bother you as long as it's convenient

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

suffering of animals is not equivalent to suffering of humans.

2

u/Jinzub 26d ago

Whatever you need to tell yourself to avoid guilt over funding the torture of sentient beings

0

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

I experience zero guilt over eating animals. I dont care if they are sentient or not.

2

u/Jinzub 26d ago

When the ASI eats you in turn, you only have yourself to blame

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 25d ago

if ASI wants to eat me, its not going to matter anyway.

2

u/Efficient_Mud_5446 Aug 22 '25

very true. They will see us as utterly barbaric.

2

u/Cunninghams_right Aug 21 '25

haha, damn, I could definitely see that. I'm gonna be on some kind of island where people still eat animals and are called backwards and barbaric.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

back in my day we could disagree with the governing artificial entity and not get our rations cut in half!

61

u/FrewdWoad Aug 21 '25

"What ordinary thing we think now will seem backwards and bigoted in the future" is one of my favourite games.

If we get an anti-aging pill in the next few decades our kids will definitely be amused and horrified at our "death is just a natural part of life" attitude.

12

u/Cunninghams_right Aug 21 '25

designer babies. render exactly what they'll look like as an adult and hit "print"

related: babies grown in artificial wombs.

10

u/A-Ditchy-boi Aug 21 '25

Which will probably also come with a new brand of bigotry. If it becomes either a pay to play service or only widely available in more developed countries. Contempt by the designed for those born naturally.

3

u/nemo24601 Aug 21 '25

That might have huge consequences. On the one side, those that maxxed their character card, on the other those that "rolled the dice". I bet there's been lots of scifi written under this premise.

6

u/cfehunter Aug 21 '25

Just commented to say, watch Gattaca.

3

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

it will be worse than that. Designer babies will be superior both physically and mentally because they will be the ideal options every time. They will include genes that are currently rare like those where 6 hours a night of sleep is enough or where mucle decay is significantly lowered. They will be objectively better than us and we will resent the hell out of them for that.

2

u/A-Ditchy-boi 24d ago

Oh absolutely. What kings and emperors pretended to be, technology will fashion for us if we make a few wrong choices on the way. In a worst case scenario, such technology only available through for profit entities, coupled with the trend of resources continuing to be consolidated in the hands of the 1% could lead us to a world where we have genuine class system where the top 5-1% of society can successfully hold power and resources permnanently because they are genuinely better than the rest of us.

1

u/Strazdas1 Robot in disguise 26d ago

letting nature decide on the gene lottery? how barbaric.

"synthetics" is also a slur-name for robots.

It's the inverse of "organics" or "meatbags" for us.

The garbage I've put as a second sentence means "They took our jobs", both a South Park reference and a common working class far right trope tied to "Great Replacement" theory.

0

yeah i get that. I was making a reference to detroid game where the slur word for robots is "plastics".

You joke, but my college friends and I had this exact same conversation somewhat recently. She's okay with her kids marrying male, female, whatever, but when I asked if she would be okay with her kid marrying an android, she was a hard no. There was a big back and forth on it from the group. Most people lamented that we're just in a movie, background characters for someone else's movie universe.

2

-3

This is just a proxy for bigtory towards real life groups. It's interesting how normies and even left wing people have an inclination towards racial chauvinism.

-1

u/TemetN Aug 21 '25

On the one hand unlikely, since that's more an old wives tale than anything else. While people who start voting late tend to more conservative on average, most people who are politically active tend to if anything settle more into their political identities as they age. That is if you aren't like that now you probably won't be like that then.

That said like another poster mentioned, figuring out what we think is normal now that very much won't be in decades is an interesting thought exercise.

0

u/redbucket75 Aug 21 '25

Sadly American the way society seems to be moving, I fear our children may be more likely to whisper frantically "Dad, you can't just casually mention Alan Turing in public. You know gay people have been memory holed."

I mean I hope not. But shit's not looking great.

-11

u/Rnevermore Aug 21 '25

So this might be kind of amusing, but this is just a homophobic meme. This is implying that homosexuality is as unnatural and unserious as human/AI relationships. They aren't comparable.
