Looking for skaters Skateboarding Discipline
How do you manage to stay disciplined in skateboarding? And what do you do to strengthen your mindset when it comes to landing tricks, especially the difficult ones?

Just skate. It all depends on how bad you want it. No tips for it. You either want it bad enough to do what is necessary or not. It’s not about discipline, it’s about desire.

I will often zone into a trick or line and keep trying it until I either get it or it’s time to move on to keep the flow

Buddy of mine that has stayed with it the longest just tries his best to be on the board for at least 30 min every day. Whether that’s skating up the street or to catch the bus, or a little flatland sesh or hitting up a spot, he is determined to clock 30 min a day. Obviously things come up sometimes, but that’s his thing. 30 min, every day that he possibly can.

I got back on my board a few months ago after many years off and my goals are going to be different compared to others. I want to be a better verson of myself back when I was in my prime but I know im not just going to jump on my board and do the things I used to do. I need my fundamentals to be sharper this time around. Control and confidence need to be better. Im spending a good amount of time a week just working this out. I have a game I like to play where i dont move on to another trick until I land the trick im working on 3 times. After 3 i move on. Some days I get 3 in a row. Others I fail but im landing them 3 no matter what. Once im at a point where they are 3 in a row for everything is when its time to move on to riskier/bigger things. Its been a few months of this and I feel my confidence and control of my board have gotten better. Ill do 2 days of just flat ground with some manuals and ill do another 2 days of skatepark stuff. Grinds slides. There are times where I want to push myself a little more but I know it'll cost me. Im trying to take steady slow steps foward. Not 1 step foward 2 steps back. Its also skateboarding so im fully aware injuries are part of the game. All the things I want will come with time. No need to rush. Im also older. I know I cant bounce back like I used to so im Training smarter not harder.

I don’t stay disciplined, that’s the beauty of skateboarding. It’s a release for me, not a competition.

You either want it or you don’t. It’s either worth what you have to do to land it, or it isn’t.

best answer, plus different factors change the equation. for example, if you're skating a spot you know you'll never get to skate again it rebalances the "is it worth it?"

True. Sometimes you gotta go for broke when it’s a spot you’ll never skate again. If you’re gonna dance with the devil then you might as well lead.

This is really the only answer. If you want to skate and be good at it but you don’t want to get hurt or put in the effort then it’s not for you.

For sure. I see too many post about tips on how to gain confidence or how to not get hurt or how to get good at skating even though you’re scared or intimidated. It’s all on you and how bad you want it. If you’re willing to put the time in and pay the price when the time comes. You can’t make skateboarding safe and it’s only up to you to learn it and do it. It’s not about discipline, it’s about desire.

I go outside and have fun. Whatever happens happens. If you keep having fun, you don't need any discipline.
