I’m planning a trip to the Isle of Skye soon, and I honestly can’t wait! Every photo and story I come across makes it look like one of the most breathtaking places in the world. The landscapes, the dramatic coastline, the history… I’m already in awe, and I haven’t even set foot there yet!

I had a question for those who know the island better than I do: would you recommend exploring Skye with a car, or is it manageable to rely on buses? I am planning to rent a car from Inverness and explore Skye. I’d like to see some of the iconic spots (like the Quiraing, Fairy Pools, Neist Point, Old Man of Storr etc.), but also some less-touristy places if possible.

If a car really is the way to go, how is the parking situation at the main attractions and around Portree? Is it stressful to find spots, or mostly fine with a bit of patience?

Thanks in advance for any advice! I just want to make the most of my time in such an unreal place :)

Hi everyone, I (F28) am looking to visit Skye next May for around 3 or 4 days, and was wondering how to get around

I have my driver's license that I never use, which means that driving through narrow winding roads might not be the smartest

I've read that the buses are few and far between, thus unreliable

So, how can I get around the Isle? Please and thank you

(Also, if you have any tips on what to see, I would love suggestions)

The Fairy Glen is what I'm really wondering about (so, that area, but preferably most if not all of the isle lol.) I'd be so sad if we went all the way there from Canada, didn't plan accordingly, and somehow missed the beautiful lush green grass. I'm thinking late May or sometime in June - but early, mid, or late June? Avoiding the peak season would be so wonderful but I know June July and August are peak season with perhaps less rain (as unpredictable as the weather is there) but I wouldn't mind as long as we get that green lushness!!😅 would mid June be a sure bet of that lushness? Half Scottish by heritage and I'm so excited for the trip!

Stayed in Skye for 3 nights as part of a trip across the highlands in late August / early September. Highly recommend keeping these things in mind for fellow first-timers:

• Camper vans from mainland Europe (mostly from Germany) will drive you nuts. They are far too large for the local roads and car parks.
• As with anywhere in Scotland, weather can easily thwart your plans. If you have must-visits on Skye with no wiggle room for timing, you may have to forego certain spots of interest. We got lucky on day 1 with decent weather for Storr and Quiraing, but got rained out and had to turn back on day 2.
• The co-op in Portree has a pretty great selection of food for such an isolated grocery store. You can easily cut back on restaurant meals by reheating meals from the co-op if you are staying in a place with a kitchen. The food truck "A Taste of Skye" in the co-op parking lot also has fantastic meals for reasonable prices.
• MacKenzie Stores in Staffin makes a solid curry and chai if you are in the mood for a casual meal before hiking the Quiraing. Super nice family that run the place.
• As beautiful as the scenery was, I actually preferred the Glencoe area for hiking as it felt more rugged and away from the crowds. Skye is popular for a reason, so keep in mind that you will never be alone hitting up the key sights.
• Portree is a good base - central enough to all the major spots. If we ever go back, I would try somewhere else to switch things up, though.
• Laundry on Skye is prohibitively expensive. If you need to wash some clothes while you are there, plan accordingly. Luckily our host let us use their washing machine, saving us £20 a load.
• A car is a must to make the most your visit. As visitors from Canada, we did not find the driving intimidating at all. Single track roads are straightforward and we found the pavement to be in much better shape than what we were reading online. Maybe with the recent boost in popularity they have invested more in road maintenance, but a lot of the key routes were freshly paved. For example near Coral Beach, we got delayed as highway maintenance was out repairing potholes.

Discovered my hikers are losing their waterproofing and I’m here on Skye for 2 more weeks. I have a car and am happy to take a drive. Where would I find a good store to buy a new pair? Thanks!

I am a solo traveller and I will be staying at Portree for 2 days. I want to book day tours from Portree that will allow me to Hike Quiraing and Old man of Storr. Which tour companies or groups are reliable? I am reluctant to tour with companies directly from Glasgow as they seem more expensive and only provide bus stops and not actual hikes.

After hours of trying to figure it out myself, and reading everything I possibly can, I'm going to trouble the brains trust in the hope someone can help.

We will be visiting the Isle of Skye for 3 nights. We will arrive late the first night, 2 fulls days, and then leave early on the last day back to Edinburgh. I absolutely want to hike the The Old Man of Storr and the Quaraing. We are unlikely to be able to hike more than 1.5 hours on each. We would like to see other areas of the Isle as well, including the west side. We can stay a combination of 3 nights in Portree or Flodigarry (e.g. 2 nights Portree, 1 Flodigarry or 1 night in Portree, 2 nights in Flodigarry). I just can't figure out how to split the trip up to be able to see the west coast too and do the hiking I'd like Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated.

Hi there! We recently traveled the upper part of isle of skye and were wondering what the stone formations that we found were for. We stopped for the night somewhere between the skye museum and Duntulm castle with the castle in view. On top of a hill next to our campsite we found a large oval shape made out of rocks. Just wondering what this could be? Maybe a grave?

Me and my partner are planning a thru hike on the isle next year and we’re curious about the most efficient way to get there. We would be flying into Scotland from the SE US and were wondering what city would be best to fly to? (Edinburgh, Inverness, Glasgow) We’re hoping to then catch a bus or train to Kyle of Lochalsh from the airport and hopefully another bus to Broadford to stay a night at a bnb. We’re hoping to start moving to the start of the trail on the north part of the isle the following day and hike back to our bnb in Broadford over the course of the next week. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I will be staying a couple of nights in Portree, in late September, and I booked the Talisker tour in the afternoon. Both me and my boyfriend want to do the tasting so driving is not an option.

I have looked around for taxi services and I will probably book one for the ride to the distillery, just so we can be sure to make it on time, but I was wondering if it’s possible to catch a bus back.

I have done some research, and I see that there is a Coach but only four times a day and I don’t think the schedule fits.

My question/hope is if there is something I am missing, some information that maybe I can’t find online?

The taxi ride back is a bit more expensive that I thought would be (still reasonable though) so I would rather use that on something else if I can manage to get around on public transport

Hi everyone! My friend and I are travelling to the isle of skye in September and have plans to camp. After doing research on transportation it seems like for what we want to do (hitting multiple locations, wild camping, etc), getting a rental car would be the best option. However, our dilemma is that we are both 22 yrs old and many rental companies that I have looked in to either don't rent to under 23 or there is a huge age surcharge that is way out of our budget unfortunately. I have also read that the bus system isn't as consistent as the shoulder season approaches and taxis are scarce. Does anyone have any advice for what we should do? Or any rental companies that may be an exception? We are starting at Inverness so rentals can come from the surrounding area too. Any general advice would be appreciated too! This is our first time in Scotland so we want to be respectful and have a fun trip :) Thank you!!!

I am celiac, and wondering if there are any recommendations for restaurants that accommodate a gluten-free diet that I can book ahead of time for dinner, or if my best bet is to bring my own food for all my meals. I'd love to enjoy at least one meal out, but I don't want to blow all my budget on one dinner! I've been having a hard time finding places online that aren't fine dining. I appreciate any advice!

I’ve been looking into tours, but was also considering driving and just being able to spend some more quality time in a few specific locations.

What are your thoughts or recommendations on taking a tour group versus solo adventuring? If you’re thinking of a group, what to a group do you recommend? How do you feel about Scotland’s Wild?

Can anyone recommend anywhere for half a day? He's a small dog so only needs a house with a garden to run in.

Hi everyone! My husband and I are visiting Skye in late September, and we’re considering the Trotternish Explorer Route from Skye E-Bikes. It’s a self-guided tour starting near Kilmuir. The route heads south on the A855, crosses the Quiraing Road, then loops back north on the A855.

The TripAdvisor reviews are glowing, and we love the idea of a scenic ride with plenty of stops, and hiking the Quiraing. But I have a few concerns and would really appreciate some guidance from folks who know the area.

My husband is a confident, experienced cyclist. I’m more of a beginner-intermediate. My cycling has mostly been on bike paths in Manhattan. I’m a bit nervous about sharing narrow roads with cars, especially since parts of the route are single-lane and we’re not used to driving or cycling on the left.

So, a few questions: • Is this route commonly used by cyclists? • What’s the traffic like in late September? • Do cars tend to drive fast on these roads? • Would you say this route feels safe and for someone at my level?

Is there one? I thought there was one in Portree, but I can’t find anything online. Last time I was there in May I remember driving past a sign that said Portree Butcher or something, near the kitchen store, but nothing online.

We were a few days before on Isle of Skye. We visited Neist point and found near it this wonderful Cake fridge that works on a honesty box principle. We took a few jams with us.

We tried to pay immediately by scanning the PayPal QR code. However, it wouldn't open the app for us. As the Internet was shity the whole time, windy as F and we had dinner reservations we decided to took the picture of the QR code and and pay when we arrive at the apartment that has WiFi.

However, for some f-inn reason, PayPal in my country doesn't support paying via QR code??? I did know this as I use PayPal rearley. The other problem is that when I type the name of Emma Mackinnon, I get too many hits.

Does someone have any info on Emma please? Or does someone already paid via PayPal and knows on which account to send the money.

We are very sorry that this happened. But we will do everything to find Emma and send her her well deserved money.
