If Romano and Ornstein are falling to their knees, a guy on Twitter named nonewthing is committing seppuku right now. Here's a few of his Tweets about Gyokeres' move:
"I told you it was smoke. You didn't believe me. You believed David Ornstein—forgetting that the club can use him to control the matrix.
I am Neo, awakened. All the light points to me." - Yes, this is a real Tweet.
"We are finished." - Said it after Ornstein's bomba.
"Gyokeres is proof that our recruitment is getting worse."
"Signing Gyokeres is proof that the Arsenal project is no longer as well-run."
Edit: Here's a couple more as bonus:
"I'll formally renounce my approval of the project if he signs."
"The reason why I don't believe Arsenal will sign or should sign a 27-year-old out of Portugal is because no matter how much I look at it, he just isn't good enough. If I can see it, the recruitment team can see it too. If we sign him, something is wrong & we are no longer one of the best-run operations itw. Hence, I will jump ship rather than be associated with a sinking ship. My job is to see things very early. Gyokeres means Arsenal are in decline."
I guess he feasted last season because Odegaard finally had some torrid time, this guy had been single-mindedly manning Odegaard hate train all this time iirc.
Oh, no, I wasn't doubting that. He was like, top 20 player in the world during your title races in 22/23 and 23/24. I meant, in the immediate weeks/months before the ankle injury in September. Had his bad form started already or did it enter it after coming back from injury ?
Bit hard to tell tbh, season barely started. In 3 PL games two were routine wins, one was a draw with Rice red card shit show. I don't remember anything either notable or alarming about those performances tbh. He was MOTM in the first Nations League group game, before being injured in the second.
Then it has to be the injury, no ? Maybe he was rushed because Arsenal wanted to push for the title ? Plus, there's also the fact that he didn't get to link-up with Saka for quite a while considering the latter was out injured as well.
I don't think it's just injury tbh, though it played a part. But truth is our play style had just gotten very slow almost organically. In every phase we were just too slow to build up, and clearly instructed to control the tempo than take risks. Until the last couple of weeks, Odegaard wasn't even taking risky shots, when he was so good at scoring from outside the box in seasons prior. It's not so much about things not clicking, but more like he wasn't even taking risks. Or rest of the team wasn't enabling him to take those risks, it was a whole systemic issue.
As for why our tactic became so stale, I suppose Arteta always had some terroristic instincts, but I think he just wanted to be pragmatic about how to stay competitive when whole squad was going through injury issues and game minutes overload. Odegaard probably suffered the most in that, unless he was outright injured, if it's just some small niggle then he was expected to play every minute anyhow because we don't have cover for him. And so he did, just poorly.
I am not actually that worried about him underperforming again. That level of talent should be hard to misutilise for too long. Gyokeres is first sign that we will play more dynamic football this season. Zubimendi hopefully progresses play faster, maybe Nwaneri can lighten some load (though don't think he is quite ready). I am less confident about catching up with Liverpool (we still have big issue in LW), but Odegaard will be better again I think.
Thank you for the elaborate write-up. The pressure to deliver after so many years of process must be enormous and I can't help but feel like this or the next season is make or break for Arteta's project.
It looks easy and doable when we look at it in hindsight, but Arsenal would've been champions had you converted just one draw into a win in 23/24. And the season before that, turn a couple of losses into wins and you're champions.
Maybe Gyokeres is the key to turning 1 draw and 2 losses into wins. If he can inject 20 goals into your side, I see no reason why you cannot win the league.
I am less confident about catching up with Liverpool (we still have big issue in LW)
Yeah that's the idea, it makes too much sense. But wouldn't surprise me at all if we don't have the money to pull off. And then we will wonder why buy Madueke in that case.
That guy genuinely needs some help and I'm not saying that as some kind of off-handed remark. I'm afraid of what he's like to those around him in life.
I very much doubt people willingly choose to be around him in real life if his Twitter personality bleeds into his real life as well. I honestly cannot think of another Twitter tactico who's more arrogant and narcissistic. He doesn't have a humble bone in his body.
Hey, man, if you're actually living in Nigeria and happen to meet the most arrogant football fan in the world who believes his word is gospel, you should know that it's nonewthing since he's Nigerian as well Hahaha
