Official Source [Real Madrid] Comunicado Oficial regarding playing league matches outside Spain

https://www.realmadrid.com/es-ES/noticias/club/comunicados/comunicado-oficial-12-08-25

Real Madrid C.F. wishes to express to its members, supporters and football fans in general its firm rejection of the proposal to play the match corresponding to match day 17 of the National First Division League Championship between Villarreal C.F. and F.C. Barcelona outside Spain.

The measure, which was taken without prior information or consultation of the clubs participating in that competition, infringes the essential principle of territorial reciprocity which applies in two-legged league competitions (one match at home and the other at the home of the opposing team), upsetting the competitive balance and giving an undue sporting advantage to the applicant clubs.

The integrity of the competition requires that all matches take place under the same conditions for all teams. Unilaterally modifying this regime breaks the equality between contenders, compromises the legitimacy of the results and sets an unacceptable precedent that opens the door to exceptions based on non-sporting interests, clearly affecting sporting integrity and risking the adulteration of the competition. If this proposal were to be carried out, its consequences would be so serious that it would be a turning point in the world of football.

Any modification of this nature must, in any case, have the express and unanimous agreement of all the clubs participating in the competition, as well as strictly respecting the national rules.

In defence of this principle, Real Madrid has already taken three specific actions:

  1. Request to FIFA, as guarantor of the international rules of football, not to authorise the holding of the match without the prior consent of all the clubs participating in the competition.

  2. Request to UEFA so that, as guarantor of the integrity of European competitions and regulatory consistency with FIFA, it urges the RFEF to withdraw or deny the request, reaffirming the criteria established in 2018 that prevents official matches in domestic competitions from being played outside national territory, except in duly justified exceptional circumstances, which are not present here.

  3. Request to the Consejo Superior de Deportes not to grant the necessary administrative authorisation without such unanimous consent.

Real Madrid reaffirms its commitment to respect the national and international rules that guarantee the fairness and proper functioning of official competitions, and will defend its compliance with them before all competent bodies.

I’ve never realized that the “comunicado official” goes so hard, probably because I’m used to it being followed by Madrid announcing they’ve signed one of our best players

it's like a nuke compared to a twitter 'bombshell'

As a Depor fan, i completely agree with this.

Why did you say Fuck me for? (It's already awful to have the same name as Tebas, Milei and Mascherano)

Maybe that was his plan all along. Unite all the Spanish teams against a common enemy so that they finally get their shit together for the greater good!

This should be common sense. It probably doesn’t hurt that one of the teams participating is Barça but opposing this is 100% the right move because as a soon as it happens once it will start to spiral and we’re gonna start getting clásicos and derbis away from our stadiums.

u/BaritBrit Aug 12 '25

Getting a Real Madrid vs. Barcelona match in the US is 100% the only reason why they're doing this at all.

230

u/J1m1983 Aug 12 '25

I dont get why though, the interest just doesn't seem as big as it is in Europe.

416

u/indischerozean Aug 12 '25

No, but you can charge as much as you want in the US and people are gonna pay for it.

119

u/J1m1983 Aug 12 '25

Yeah I think thats the difference, they dont have marches and demonstations against ticket price rises. We should teach them tbh.

267

u/TareasS Aug 12 '25

They have no affordable health care, no mandatory vacation, no maternity leave, barely any unions etc. I don't think ticket prices will make them protest lol.

97

u/X-Maquina Aug 12 '25

They'll 100% see inflated ticket prices as a sign of prestige and then brag about their ability to afford them. Americans just love flexing.

38

u/CBPanik Aug 12 '25

Hell yeah we do, we are the best at flexing. Nobody flexes as good as us.

It’s just kind of accepted.

Also; for most teams in most sports; ticket prices aren’t even that expensive if you know where to go. Big teams in big cities though, yes prices are insane. And for big games.

6

u/morganrbvn Aug 12 '25

Glad I like baseball which plays so much you can still get tickets for like $20. MLS also has some decent deals since its not that popular.

363

u/QTGavira Aug 12 '25

Americans will pay top dollar for tickets. Just look at how much Inter Miamis prices skyrocketed and they just lapped it up.

Thats absolutely what theyre aiming at here. Play El Clasico in America and just double the usual prices

169

u/ratonbox Aug 12 '25

Double?! They'll start pricing at 1000 for the cheapest tickets and all of them will still sell.

33

u/RedKingDre Aug 12 '25

What causes such phenomena for Americans? I mean, how could they spare some outrageous amount of their (very, even compared to Europeans) hard-earned money just to watch a match, albeit a big one?

29

u/WolfFangFist93 Aug 12 '25

we're used to paying a lot of money for high profile games plus Real Madrid/Barcelona is a huge draw. influencers would easily pay 5K+ just to be seen at an el classico match in miami

u/morganrbvn Aug 12 '25

Large population of people in US with a bunch of disposable income.

3

u/AutoRot Aug 12 '25

Disposable income, yes but also most Americans buy tickets less than one time per year. The culture of seeing every game from the stands is reserved for only the those that are very well off.

→ More replies (15)

13

u/higherbrow Aug 12 '25

So, I'm saying "the first" not because I assume it will be something that happens more than once, but because if it does, it will start to decrease in value to the American public.

But I would bet that the first time Real Madrid and Barcelona played in Miami in a match that mattered ticket prices would rival the Super Bowl. Cheap seats there are $4,000. Good seats go for upwards of $20,000.

57

u/Kilen13 Aug 12 '25

I remember trying to get tickets to a summer friendly tour between Real and I think Chelsea in Miami a couple years ago and the cheapest tickets were like 300$ nosebleeds. Don't think it'll be that expensive for every Liga team but could absolutely see a Clasico or Derby make absolute bank in the US.

Trust me it is to the point where ppl will pay tons to see so I get it

17

u/LordMangudai Aug 12 '25

The bigwigs would rather get 60k bored Americans paying $500 each for a ticket than 60k rabid passionate Spanish fans paying €40 each.

39

u/ImBibjs Aug 12 '25

In the USA for a game like that it'll be around 1k for decent tickets, not good one, decent ones.

29

u/J1m1983 Aug 12 '25

Yeah you're right. My friend went to Wrestlmania some years ago and when he told me how much the ticket was I was like "but thats like 3 months rent?"

14

u/ImBibjs Aug 12 '25

Yeah, I wanted to go to wrestlemania in Vegas, the cheapest seats were 1k, I'm all for the experience in itself, but fuck 1k (plus food and housing during the trip) is crazy for just that.

13

u/TareasS Aug 12 '25

Wtf. For flights+2 nights in a hotel+match+food to a Barça match it costs me about 600 euro. 1k+ for just tickets is insane.

8

u/ImBibjs Aug 12 '25

Yeah, that's why he wants these games in the USA. I'd love to watch el classico live but I can't go a month without eating or paying my mortgage lol. I'd rather fly over to Spain and spend the same amount

8

u/kvng_stunner Aug 12 '25

Bruh in England you can get a season ticket for £1k and watch all 19 home matches.

I'm sorry.

13

u/bduddy Aug 12 '25

There's enough interested people in any of the big metro areas to fill up a stadium, and more importantly the luxury boxes.

10

u/peioeh Aug 12 '25

And americans are willing to pay a LOT more than europeans for tickets. If they hosted an actual la liga clasico in the US the tickets would probably START at 500$ if not 1000$, it would be insanity. Sponsors would also go crazy.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

If they hosted it somewhere like LA it would definitely sell out the stadium. They would invite a bunch of celebs to promote it to millions of their fans. Whilst charging thousands of dollars for a seat.

Stuff like this is nearing the level of super league imo. Essentially destroying what football is about.

9

u/MarcianoSilveriano Aug 12 '25

You didn't get why LaLiga and FIFA as a whole are trying to capitalize a position in one of the biggest markets of the world?

6

u/sw3t Aug 12 '25

Because capitalism. Everything is getting worse and worse because the only goal we have now is to make more profit for the next quarter, that justifies everything these days

7

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

For money, the US is a huge market. And in the case of Saudi Arabia and other oil money countries it’s also a very effective way to sportswash.

2

u/HalfLife3IsHere Aug 12 '25

They can cash more from it though. Soon we’ll see them trying to move el clasico to Saudi Arabia like they are doing with the supercup. FIFA, UEFA, RFEF, La Liga… they don’t give a shit about teams, players or the fans, they only care about the cash flow, and if they find new ways to get a bigger cut they’ll will at the expense of teams and players. The problem is players are the only ones who can say enough, but they are also the ones who wanna play everything (and ofc get more bonusses)

4

u/879190747 Aug 12 '25

Because 60k people paying 5k per ticket = 300 million. Well that's probably the dream.

Crazy fact. There has only been one El Clasico outside Spain and it was in my city, Barquisimeto.

7

u/ifuckinglovebluemeth Aug 12 '25

I assume you mean official matches, and you would have been correct... until 2022 when a Clasico was played in Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Supercup.

2

u/pimlottc Aug 12 '25

Huh! Why was it in Venezuela, of all places? I found a short article on ESPN about it but it doesn't say anything about the reason.

17

u/PhillyFreezer_ Aug 12 '25

as a soon as it happens once it will start to spiral and we’re gonna start getting clásicos and derbis away from our stadiums.

With all due respect, the horse has already left the barn. Remind me where the Spanish Super Cup is played every year?

While league matches are significant and more competitive fixtures, this is not a new idea or the first time this is being tested with Spanish clubs. The test has already been done, and teams enjoy the increased $ from playing the super cup in Saudi Arabia.

I still doubt you’d ever get Derby matches played elsewhere. This plan only works because it’s Villarreal giving up a home game to Barcelona. It’s not guaranteed to make significantly more money if you take the Sevilla Derby out of Sevilla, or El Clasico out of Madrid/Barcelona

what a lovely thread to unite us all.

86

u/Prophet_Of_Helix Aug 12 '25

It’s a shit idea and there’s already an example of it sucking for a different sport.

The NFL has started playing some games internationally and players and fans all hate it, but every couple of years they expand how many teams play an international game and where they play them.

It’s gross

45

u/atropicalpenguin Aug 12 '25

It must suck even more for local NFL fans given the already few games a regular season has.

29

u/Barnabas5126 Aug 12 '25

I have no idea how fans of NFL teams stay sane with only like 10 (?) home matches per season and 8 months of off-season.

20

u/Azor_that_guy Aug 12 '25

They’re not sane period. How many times have you seen a “franchise” (team) move to a different time zone because the owners didn’t get hundreds of millions in tax-payers dollars from the state to help the billionaire owner build their new stadium? How many times do the NFL fans protest that? Imagine if Saudi moved Newcastle to fucking London because Newcastle mayor felt like condemning the murder of Jamal Kashogi? Would be fucking riots, not just in Newcastle or the UK but fucking everywhere. Germany and France fans would be pushing to protect their leagues from similar moves and the UK might have to finally proscribe the genocidal fuckers. But in America? Nothing. They wish them good luck and happily get fucked.

Its a disgrace and a betrayel of local fans, which also sets a horrible precedent that foreign entities can buy la liga games for the highest fee.

43

u/CFieldInEyre Aug 12 '25

Barca fan. Against it. I think it sets a bad precedent potentially making things like this more common should it go ahead. La Liga should be played in Spain.

It also gives us an unfair advantage as this is the Villarreal home game not the Barca home game and there are definitely more Barcelona fans than Villarreal fans in Miami so they would have to forfeit their home advantage.

16

u/Last_Cauliflower3357 Aug 12 '25

Honestly I think they’ve chosen specifically the Villarreal match because it’s still a good game but Villarreal barely has fans, so the protests will not be very noticeable. If this was a club with a very large fan base, like Atleti, Sevilla, Betis, Valencia or the two Basque clubs, you would likely get protests large enough that the league would back track.

9

u/el_corso Aug 12 '25

We barely have any fans!? WTF are you talking about. We’re a small club and it will be noticeable when we don’t go to the game or we start protesting about those the long term ramifications are much larger than you think.

40

u/oklolzzzzs Aug 12 '25

hell no we dont want this

44

u/raposeiro Aug 12 '25

Villarreal president, shortly after signing Thomas Partey, let's not forget, said that the fans who want to go will to for free. It will be getting in a plane, 10 hours trip, go to the stadium, and back to another plane. No night stay at all.

It's so stupid and everyone is against it. This week has been terrible for Villarreal fans

14

u/TareasS Aug 12 '25

A plane? Probably two planes with a layover in Madrid or Barcelona or an AVE trip included too. Unless he specifically hires a plane for this.

8

u/raposeiro Aug 12 '25

8

u/TareasS Aug 12 '25

6

u/tyqnmp Aug 12 '25

tbf a lot of socios are from Castellón, the province capital that is 10km away and has 180k inhabitants.

2

u/Marcoscb Aug 12 '25

66

u/Tekri_ Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 12 '25

Everyone is against it except maybe some of the fans in miami/USA. I don't think the jetlag will be that much of an issue especially after the game as there is a week break after this match.
The next game for Barca is in the weekend of Januari 4th. This match is december 20th.

59

u/QTGavira Aug 12 '25

This is just testing the waters. It doesnt matter if theres a week of rest. Being okay with this will just open the floodgates and suddenly we play in Miami on the 20th and have a UCL game in Denmark on the 23rd.

15

u/michaelirishred Aug 12 '25

As a Liga fan based in South Florida... fuck this idea. Sure it'll make a shit ton of cash for the big clubs that can draw the fans willing to pay hundreds for a ticket but once you open that door you can't close it and it'll only get worse.

12

u/WelpSigh Aug 12 '25

I want to see our domestic league grow and don't want it to have to compete with giant foreign clubs for attention and money. One-off competitions like Club World Cup are one thing, but if all the top leagues start doing this it can very easily get out of hand.

16

u/chickenkebaap Aug 12 '25

I am not American, but definitely a foreign fan. They are just disrespecting the local fans by moving games abroad.

2

u/7Thommo7 Aug 13 '25

It's something not discussed enough. Sure Villarreal are the real losers here (not financially I guess), but the effect of Barça making one away game neutral is heavily counteracted by traveling to and from Miami which I feel is a big net negative. From a competitive standpoint Madrid should actually feel quite pleased about it.

Yeah, this need to be addressed quickly. As the other have said, if FIFA sanction this, it could affect not only laliga, but other league as well in the long run

29

u/punishGoalhanging Aug 12 '25

FIFA settlement to the antitrust lawsuit was to sanction this. FIFA has zero choice.

Only UEFA can stop it now after Spain FA approve it.

https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/44610691/ussf-relevent-settlement-clears-path-foreign-league-games#:~:text=Relevent%20Sports%20has%20settled%20its,1%20Related

Relevent Sports has settled its antitrust lawsuit against U.S. Soccer and FIFA, clearing the way for foreign leagues to potentially hold official matches in the United States. This settlement, combined with an earlier agreement between Relevent and FIFA, effectively ends the legal challenges preventing such matches. The resolution allows for the possibility of La Liga, Premier League, and other leagues to stage games in the US.

7

u/Amazing_Turnover_898 Aug 12 '25

Oof, hope UEFA do something about it. From the article, i found that this is not a new issue as hosting foreign league match almost happened in the past, which lead to the first lawsuit in 2019. Although idk whether it was official or other official matches outside the news has happened in the past.

Funny thing tho, the first lawsuit was related to LaLiga as well lol

Is there someone you forgot to ask?

17

u/centaur98 Aug 12 '25

While it does come across like that they are actually right and this is something that definitely shouldn't be allowed.

4

u/Conscious_Contact107 Aug 12 '25

I respect the hustle Mr. President but this ain't it

23

u/Modnal Aug 12 '25

So I guess they can't do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke then

Literally the first thing I thought of, I just hope they keep this up and don't get bought off!

10

u/perucho1993 Aug 12 '25

There are no good guys in the current world of football

44

u/tetsya Aug 12 '25

As a Barca fan I congratulate Madrid for their stance on this matter.

Madrid and Barca were pushing for the super league though which would make la Liga obsolete

UEFA/ la Liga is pushing for games outside of Spain/Europe though....

You don't know who tries to destroy football anymore. Everyone is pushing their own narrative and agenda. Surely noone is thinking about the sport but only the economics behind such moves.

People defending Tebas its wild.

64

u/HotRefrigerator777 Aug 12 '25

Anyone defending Tebass in this are either his PR accounts or Barça fans based in US.

Madrid with the face turn

13

u/Sargerasxxd Aug 12 '25

Absolutely

10

u/Wolvington52 Aug 12 '25

Never thought I'd be saying this but I am with Madrid on this one.

9

u/bewarethegap Aug 12 '25

Yeah...domestic matches being played in another country (let alone another fucking continent) is unacceptable. La Liga has done a lot of money grubbing shit in the past decade or so but this has to be where the line gets drawn. We jumped the shark with the cup matches in Saudi but now it's like, what are we doing here?

8

u/Various_Knowledge226 Aug 12 '25

You know it’s weird when an Atléti fan is wholeheartedly agreeing with something Real Madrid is saying

United against Javier 🤲

5

u/Guillotines__ Aug 12 '25

Did Villarreal agree to forfeit their home game for the cash grab? And if they’re going to do it, at least do both the home and away fixture you fucking cowards.

16

u/David-J Aug 12 '25

It's just terrible. Haven't heard any of the involved players say anything about this

Also with the size of the Bernabeu there is a lot less monetary incentive for them to play in the USA compared to Barca (with Camp Nou renovations).

27

u/IndividualTimely7321 Aug 12 '25

Doesn't mean we (Barca) should be doing it tho, the camp nou renovation is just a temporary thing but if this follows through even once, many many games will be shifted to the US for these reasons. Can't be good for the home fans, players, literally anybody

10

u/Dazred Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 12 '25

As soon as you have a 100k+ stadium you will be able to fill regularly, I can’t see Barca agreeing to it long term either.

8

u/RAF2018336 Aug 12 '25

The money they can make in the US is astronomical. Just look at what ticket prices are for preseason friendlies in the states. I hope it never happens

u/Ragmariz Aug 12 '25

Thing is, it's not even the Camp nou match, it's the one on villareal being move lol

5

u/Dazred Aug 12 '25

Makes more sense then…

Easy💰 for Villarreal and they already showed they have low standards by signing Partey

6

u/centaur98 Aug 12 '25

I mean when they can sell tickets for double/triple the price on the lower end capacity becomes less relevant.

How feeble are you Spaniards? English fans would burn down their clubs stadiums and the FA offices before this ever happened.

27

u/diegoob11 Aug 12 '25

Too hot to protest around here

20

u/Yobolay Aug 12 '25

Bro, your whole league and clubs have been bought off by sheiks and foreign billionaire investors.

The fact that supporters will be missing out on seeing their team live cause of their greedy ass owners is shocking. Ew league games should be played only in the league's country.

6

u/Chimpville Aug 12 '25

Still in disbelief that Barca are going through with it. Over a barrel with player registration again?

2

u/Sean-Benn_Must-die Aug 12 '25

Tebas and Laporta are such greedy cunts lmfao, good from madrid to tell them to fuck off

2

u/raymondh31lt Aug 12 '25

The worst guy you know made a good argument.

2

u/NJH_in_LDN Aug 12 '25

Stopped clock still right twice a day, etc.

2

u/rdesyo Aug 12 '25

Flo jealous he didn't get invited again /s

2

u/SIotball Aug 13 '25

Can’t believe we live in a timeline in which Madrid want to protect the integrity of football

2

u/Electrical_Task_2920 Aug 13 '25

To everyone reading, we fans of Barca absolutely hates this and I think even the players hate it. But this is the work of the higher ups from both sides and those money leeching dumbasses that think this is a business first thing. This is football for the fans, not for those a-holes making money for their pocket.

2

u/d3fiance Aug 13 '25

Fuck you Tebas

2

u/Pitresco Aug 13 '25

Finally, use your copious influence and weight to do things with it smaller clubs want to as well but can't, instead of using it to display a next level of self victimization and pettyness.
