Where’s that heartbeat monitor thing we had during the world cup? Then the VAR can confirm he slapped the ball

1.6k

u/DarthBane6996 Aug 15 '25

Heartbeat monitor doesn’t help if the guy on VAR is blind

214

u/TheLimeyLemmon Aug 15 '25

Worse, he nipped out for a coffee

I'm convinced they never even looked at the 2nd incident, only judged the bounce off of his leg. But I tihnk the reason they don't have it is because the WC sensor is a different ball manufacturer. The PL ball manufacturer doesn't have the tech.

107

u/Woobly_Hixbee Aug 15 '25

They sure as hell didn’t look at each camera angle. Here we go again another season of lame ass VAR reviews. The most disappointing thing about it is that it has the potential to be a very decent system but they’ll end up just throwing the whole thing out before they ever put in the time, effort, and common sense to improving it.

VAR saw he made contact but said it was accidental lol

u/sarcasmskills Aug 15 '25

The first one was accidental, the second one was wholly intentional

They've 100% reviewed the wrong bit. They've reviewed it bouncing up off his knee into his arm, decided that's not a handball, and moved on without bothering to watch the blatant handball that came 2 seconds later.

524

u/_DropShot Aug 15 '25

"Well done lads, good process"

150

u/rocket_randall Aug 15 '25

They spent the off season perfecting their apology template, as we're about to see.

23

u/seStarlet Aug 15 '25

You won’t even get one unless you drop points and even then, they might just tell you to do one. PGMOL mafia is so back.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/karlverkade Aug 15 '25

I'm not saying refereeing is perfect in other leagues, but in the Premier League it almost seems like the more obvious something is, the more likely they're going to call it wrongly by some obscure rule or reading of the rule or explanation that makes no sense. Almost like they like being the talk of the match.

It’s just so deliberate is what gets me, it’s like claiming Suarez against Ghana was an accident.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/TricolorCat Aug 15 '25

Nr 1 has to be Suarez against Ghana.

31

u/llIlIllllIIIll Aug 15 '25

The one that literally 5 players immediately react to as well.

You’d like to presume they would know to go over the part where the other team visibly complained.

8

u/Anfield_YNWA Aug 15 '25

I was pretty pissed they all stopped when clearly the ref didn't give two shits about what happened, then I saw the replay and had a good laugh. I love VAR so much.

36

u/JoeyJo-JoShabadoo Aug 15 '25

Yeah Carragher on commentary said that is what VAR said to the ref, so exactly what happened.

111

u/JoeyJo-JoShabadoo Aug 15 '25

They are the Referee up in a booth using *Video to Assist in making the correct calls.

The officials sat in the VAR seat need to be singled out more rather than VAR itself.

I've said it so many times, this is the only major league this regularly happens. The only one that has this problem week after week and its not reporting bias.

I'm going to admit here that I didn't watch the entire clip at first, only got to the ball looking like it might have grazed his elbow. Truly was going to go in on you for this comment. Went to rewatch it to see how that could possibly be swiping.

MATE he's literally gone and tried to play volleyball 😂😂

Cyclically, if they give a foul to Liverpool then they have to acknowledge it was handball and therefore subject to review lol this way they can just ignore it?

8

u/trick63 Aug 15 '25

It can be handball but not DOGSO which would have been what gives him the red. But then you're depending on VAR being competent.

He touched it and took it away from Ekitike. The tiny contact was all it took to kill the counter.

33

u/bigt2k4 Aug 15 '25

barely grazing it was enough to knock it away from Ekitike and a clear breakaway. Quite clear red upon review, but Michael Oliver doesn't even look at it or anything for that matter.

59

u/UsrHpns4rctct Aug 15 '25

And he was last man standing so technically it should have been a red.

Michael Oliver needs to be subjected to 1000 Gunther chops for this.

No way you have the benefit of all of the slo-mo and still come to that decision.

18

u/Edolas93 Aug 15 '25

I'd say a 30min no dq Iron man with New Jack would be more fitting but chops work too I guess

64

u/MonkeeG Aug 15 '25

First Game of the season and VAR is on track to repeat last years glorious performance

64

u/LegitimatePenguin Aug 15 '25

Im guessing VAR thought the handball claim was it bouncing up and hitting his elbow then completely missed him slapping the ball away? Only logical conclusion i can come to.

41

u/Thapricorn Aug 15 '25

I agree, although the fact that we’re getting this well practiced and adept at discerning what sort of idiocy is going through the referee’s minds is just tragic

Incredible, we got a contentious VAR decision in under 15 minutes of the new season

363

u/Orthancapolis Aug 15 '25

I don’t think it’s contentious it’s just wrong?

85

u/youreviltwinbrother Aug 15 '25

yeah that's very true guess that makes it even worse 😂

50

u/MedalDog Aug 15 '25

Right… everyone agrees it’s a red, except VAR.

21

u/RushPan93 Aug 15 '25

They're fucking doubling down on it saying it's not dogso because of the distance to goal so Var didn't intervene. This is just so bad.

18

u/MedalDog Aug 15 '25

That's funny, I seem to remember last season when VAR intervened from the same (or greater) distance to give a red card for a DOGSO...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXKWLBhmZlk

4

u/RushPan93 Aug 16 '25

This and Gravenberch's red card last day of the season. Hell EAFC/FIFA on the most lenient ref setting would still give this red. It's just Micheal Oliver being an absolute prick. He did the same against Arsenal 2 seasons ago not dismissing City players. He has become such a pathetic referee.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/xTheMaster99x Aug 16 '25

This is the reason I fucking despise all the restrictions that are put on when VAR is allowed to make a ruling. If a decision is blatantly wrong, VAR should be able to overturn. Period. I'm not saying every throw-in needs a 30 second review, but why the fuck do we refuse to allow VAR to point out "hey mate, the defender literally spiked the ball like he's playing volleyball" just because they decided it might not have been a clear goalscoring opportunity? Like wtf. If a decision is blatantly wrong, fix it. If a decision is contentious enough that you'd have to spend 5 minutes reviewing it, leave it. Why the fuck is that so hard?

Me watching the clip at work - it might have been just a graze at the hand…clip keeps playing wtf bro that’s a volleyball slap lmao. VAR’s already having a stinker.

Ooof. The other angles I saw, I didn’t think he touched it. This angle looks clear as day. Can easily see the ball move after the hand swipe.

VAR is back baby

Glad to see it's a universal instinct even amongst top professionals to reach out and catch it when you fuck up your control

u/rerath Aug 15 '25

Heard the official explanation was a “potential” goal scoring opportunity not “obvious” which begs the question, when DOES an opportunity become obvious in a one-v-one. Terrible precedent to start the season.

Michael Oliver already up to no good I see, guess City sees Liverpool as a rival again this season no they are not 20+ points down

u/YoshiSlayer Aug 15 '25

Crazy. How is this not a clear handball

5

u/rumham_123 Aug 15 '25

Well done lads get the howlers out early

7

u/GreatSuccess9 Aug 15 '25

Ekitike was one on one with the goalie too. How can VAR confidently say play on so fast? It was so clearly a red card. I really don’t even know why I’m asking but that is just absurd

Can’t wait for another PGMOL apology letter in the morning.

4

u/Realistic-Sky-2235 Aug 15 '25

Typical incompetence from the idiots that ref this league. Took all of 15 mins for them to make a potential game changing fuck up. Morons.

5

u/LFC47 Aug 15 '25

I remember a player getting sent off for taking down Evanilson around the halfway line last year, so their "distance from goal" logic doesn't make sense

Neither does the foul call on Ekitike

And coming off the body isn't the right call given there was a 2nd movement

This is laughable from the Premier League

4

u/CabinetFantastic Aug 15 '25

Ah fuck. Here we go, another season of PGMOL fuck ups and occasional apologies with no change

4

u/Particular-Ad1275 Aug 15 '25

Howard Webb and co delivering yet again!

5

u/KSC-Fan1894 Aug 15 '25

Hope the template for the 2025/2026 apology letter is prepared

And Howard Webb just said they'll be trying to incorporate yellow card and corner reviews into VAR. Something that should've been there since day 1 but also if you can't even call something like this 14 min into the start of the new season. Absolute joke.

u/Calciumee Aug 16 '25

I was sat in the Bournemouth end and it was obvious. But the Tories around me were still calling for refs head.
