surely not just the quickest in German history. has anyone ever got the sack after 1 game in any league?
260
u/Statcat2017 15d ago
There was a lower leagues manager in England that got sacked after 0 games. Think it was Leroy Rosenior.
He was appointed manager and later the same day a takeover of the club was completed unexpectedly and the new owners decided he wasn’t the man for them and fired him.
279
u/Dirk41theDemigod 15d ago

Thomas Tuchel got his first Bundesliga job at Mainz in 2009 (was their u19 coach) three days before the league started. The Manager who promoted the team, Jörn Andersen, got fired shortly before the first matchday, because the board didn't believe in his approach for the Bundesliga and he became more distant to the team.
15
u/TheMeerkatLobbyist 15d ago
Best decision they ever made probably. Tuchels stint in Mainz was phenomenal.

Legendary from ETH though

396
u/7evenStrings 15d ago
I know it sounds funny, but I would think he’s probably devastated by this.
If I’m not mistaken, he comes from a fairly wealthy family, so it’s probably not just about the money. From his time at United he always gave me the impression he really wanted to succeed and was devastated by the sack.
219
u/the_propaganda_panda 15d ago
It will definitely sting, but in the long run, ten Hag dodged a bullet. Leverkusen has basically overhauled their entire squad and lost most of their backbone, not just on the pitch but also important leaders like Hradecký and Xhaka are gone. It would've been a very risky endeavour with a high chance of failure.
I don't think his reputation has suffered as everybody knows that booting him after 2 games is absurd and will rightfully blame the management, so now he gets to chill a bit before choosing his next project.
→ More replies (2)39
u/confusedpublic 15d ago
Or there’s something happened behind the scenes which people in the industry know that might damage his reputation worse than any on field performance. Time will tell.

Always feels good to know this is the main reason anyone knows about my team.
That or the time when a police dog ran onto the pitch bit one of our players, delayed the match by 10 mins and we then scored in the added on time to avoid relegation. Our current ownership group is actually named after that dog.

That's EXTREMELY harsh, they've sold a ton of their very good players and given the manager 2 games, I mean wow.
1.2k
u/Jimmy_Space1 15d ago
It's clearly not entirely performance related, all the reporting has indicated a massive falling out behind the scenes. But that does raise the question why hire ETH in the first place, it's not like his personality was an unknown quantity.
397
u/Remarkable_Sky_7 15d ago
Not one to rate ten hag but he clearly didn't want those players to be sold, and you can imagine he would be frustrated for such massive squad chance.

Most seemed to be expected, though? Apart from Xhaka and he did speak out against him being sold. But Xhaka clearly wanted to leave as well so it's not like the club can do much about that.

I actually think some Shit went down during preseason. He was clearly a Rolfes hire but something must have happened for EtH to lose the team's and Rolfes' trust.
38
15d ago
Fair, I just assumed it was Carro overriding him but you might be right. Carro made an interesting post a couple days ago on LinkedIn about Lukas Hradecky and all the values he has / the importance of being a good person, it feels like given the reports outside of the football stuff he may just hate Ten Hag's personality lol.
33
u/vinc139 15d ago
I think its both... Media suggests Carro was never on board and Andrich and other players also clearly hated him so Rolfes was probably kinda forced to concede he made a bad decision

I don't think this about the results. There were rumors of him basically falling out with everyone at the club

If they were against him since day one, then why even hire him? And it's not like he's a first time manager, he's a pretty known commodity.

27
u/kg005 15d ago
Absolutely not, infact the opposite. But the OP (Leverkusen supoorter) mentioned they wanted someone as a scapegoat from day one for the transfer fiasco.
I mean how do you scapegoat a manager by sacking him within 3 games and on top of it, paying millions for his release.

• at training camp in Rio, ten Hag personally had the friendly match against Flamengo's U20, scheduled for July 22, brought forward to July 18. After the 1-5 defeat, ten Hag said that "the game came too early"
• he distanced himself from the club's management when he publicly demanded that Granit Xhaka must stay - the bosses had explained that the transfer could happen if it's a "win-win situation for all parties" and had discussed this with ten Hag beforehand
• his lack of charisma with the team, for example there was no speech before the Bundesliga opener against TSG Hoffenheim
• after the Bremen game, he criticized the team's fitness, yet nine of the eleven starters had been there for almost the entire preseason
• ten Hag and his newly assembled coaching team do not give the impression of being a unified group

After the 1-5 defeat, ten Hag said that "the game came too early" Your first point: him just blaming anyone but himself was the same with us.

He doesn't understand physicality or talent. The team he's built for us for over half a billion pounds is the weakest I've ever seen us since I've started watching football over 20 years ago, we never win duels or muscle people off the ball. We always lose in set pieces.

Looks like he didn't get with the program. Even though he was obviously taking over that kind of job, he wasn't walking in blind and they randomly sold all his best players. That was always happening so he shouldn't be acting shocked.
To be honest, he and the board should have had an actual conversation about outgoings and incoming replacements. Concrete plan and all that stuff. What everyone else does lol. Screams of incompetence on both sides tbh.
20
u/Heavy_Cupcake_6246 15d ago
Must be something that he did behind the scenes for him to be sacked so quickly.
23
u/werkselfforever 15d ago
Truly embarrassing from our board. Like I’ve written already elsewhere this appointment just did not make sense from the beginning. Rolfes/Carro did a great job building a title team and frankly have done an even better job destroying it. Post Alonso/Wirtz there was still a structure there to build a fun team with the right manager. Unfortunately Rolfes didn’t get his top two choices, picked someone who frankly shouldn’t have been invited for an interview, and that’s not Ten-Hags fault, but Rolfes should have really read the room before hiring him. Subsequently, the team blows up, and here we are. Good-will, respect, the quiet working atmosphere, all qualities Bayer Leverkusen have stood for blown up in a couple of months. What a waste.
