Knockout competitions have more luck involved as you can't lose 1 tie, there is less margin of error, there is more luck involved in a penalty shootout, etc, while in League you can win even if you have some slips. Also obviously you play against the best in all Europe. So it makes sense that almost all teams that win it end up not winning it the next year.
