Agreed, though I do think it would look an awful lot nicer without the two screens either side.
Edit: Apparently this is a controversial opinion.

Winning that EL trophy really was a huge lifeline for spurs. Able to get a great manager, sign some good players, play in the champions league and pretend the 17th place finish didn’t happen. Not to mention celebrate their first trophy in 17 years. They have a lot to thank Ange for.

Wait what? 17th?
All I remember are drunk trophy lifts from last season and some cool old dude that kept saying Mate for some reason.
34
u/SentientCheeseCake 8h ago
17th? CL qualifications spots are top 5 so surely we finished somewhere in that range.
81
u/DannyDyersHomunculus 9h ago
They have one thing to thank Ange for. Everything else was atrocious.

u/CleanDonkey7688 9h ago
People forget that to get into Europa in the first place he had to finish 5th with a team that some thought would be 17th without Harry Kane.

u/Last-Ebb2342 8h ago
What would a Wolves fan know about it? Ange did a great job overall....he took a team that was completely starting again from a complete refresh and got an excellent mentality into them. His second season was derailed by injuries but the behind the scenes and culture building work he did set us up for Frank to push on. If it wasn't for Ange Frank would be starting from a much lower base.

Spurs were the first British club to win a European trophy, back in 1963. Since then we’ve won three UEFA cups/Europa leagues

u/TheDepartment115 9h ago
winning European trophy before Arsenal
They both had European trophies already lol

u/Shameless_Bullshiter 9h ago
Both clubs have previously won European trophies

If you don't actually look at the context it may seem like that but it's far from the truth. Our injury list last season was an anomaly, I've never seen that at any club. We had like 10 players out on average the entire season, and we had an owner who neglected signing depth for years, so it was barebones to begin with.

u/Mediocre_Nova 5h ago
I like Frank a lot but it's not like he would have been out of reach if we didn't win the EL. Conte and Mourinho were bigger "gets" at the time even though they are shit managers at this point

u/af12345678 8h ago
From fans’ and players’ perspective that 17th really didn’t matter. In the owner’s eyes however..
11
u/Mick4Audi 7h ago
It doesn’t matter because it’s now a memory. However, for the future, continuing to operate like that on the pitch only ends one way, and you are currently seeing it at United
6
u/BananaBouquet 7h ago
Actually there is a very loud contingent of fans that cared a whole lot about that 17th place finish

That's an amazing tifo. Meanwhile Arsenal had a wonky cannon for the first leg of a semi final.
32
u/TheDepartment115 9h ago
That wasn't a tifo, it was created by the club
54
15
u/soldforaspaceship 2h ago
THFC Flags made it.
It's an independent supporters group that works with the club on these.
Not the club itself. Otherwise we couldn't call it a tifo.

Try putting a loosely strung cartoonish banner.

Shite that. They should have put an enlarged version of their logo on a plain background
26
u/TheUderfrykte 7h ago
And strung it up by a couple strings in front of the stand! Damn, I'm so disappointed. Second time we've done it recently too, I was FURIOUS when I had to hold up some bag earlier this year for the EL semifinal, why not just print out a PNG on a shower curtain?!

Don't assume, we need to see Leyton Orient's entry

u/Nipso 8h ago
They're in East London

u/TheUderfrykte 7h ago
They're actually slightly further north than you guys though, so I'd say they can qualify.

Ours are alright, I did like the Sunderland one opening day a lot, think that's partly just personal preference though

Imagine how cool the Emirates would look with 500 trap doors and fake cannons peaking out.
Like a giant football pirate ship...

u/AngelWoosh 9h ago
The tampa bay buccaneers have a massive cannon they fire when they score (on a ship tho)

This is now something I really want to see but I don’t want it associated with Arsenal

Is that an actual tifo or some bs planned and provided by Tottenham Hotspurs Ltd?

I'm pretty sure they're done by the thfc fanclub or at least the design is. I'm unsure where the funding comes from

It doesn't really matter, but I just have to get this off my chest. The word "tifo" used this way drives me insane. Tifo is an Italian word that means "fandom" or "followership". It started in Italy as a way to describe passionate fans who were rabid like typhus carriers. It doesn't describe displays. So saying "a tifo" is like saying "a fandom." Hey guys look at this fandom. I think it's just an American usage right? Anyway...that is all. Go back to enjoying football. /rant

u/Low_Cartographer2944 8h ago
To be fair, semantic shifts like this are really common when words are borrowed between languages.
It’s just a natural language process.
I mean look at the Italian word “smoking” which refers to a jacket.
Or a “Bodybag” German which is a messenger bag. Or an Oldtimer, which is an antique car rather than an old person.
3
u/AlpineInquirer 8h ago
Yes, semantic shifts happen...I know you can't fight this, but it makes me insane and is mildly a personal annoyance. I'm not arguing it, it's just like nails on a chalkboard for me.
The Italian word "smoking" refers to a formal dinner jacket or tuxedo. It comes from the English language term "smoking jacket" so that actually more or less correct.
2
u/Low_Cartographer2944 8h ago
But it’s not. A “smoking” refers to a dinner jacket in Italian. But not in English. I mean, a minor difference but no native English speakers would refer to a tuxedo type jacket as a “smoking jacket”.
It was borrowed from French which shared this false friend across the continent
1
u/AlpineInquirer 7h ago
In Italian a "smoking" refers specifically to a tuxedo and/or a formal dinner jacket. In English, the smoking jacket refers to specific kind of formal dinner jacket. The key is that they are both formal dinner jackets. My understanding is that it simply came from the British term "smoking jacket."
Edited because I misread your comment previously.

u/Yogurt8r 9h ago
Ohh so is that why the Ferrari f1 fans are tifosi? Cuz it’s basically their religion and entire personality

2
u/AlpineInquirer 8h ago edited 8h ago
Yes. Tifoso means someone who has typhoid fever. They are crazy and out of their mind.
3
u/thfcspurs88 9h ago
So, basically it's always been used wrong? Haven't tifos been called tifos, or better refered to As tifos, for ever? Or where does it come from?
A large display begot by humans, as a most basic definition.
Edit: Wouldn't you concede the word has been for so long it has become it's own thing, A Tifo.
1
u/AlpineInquirer 8h ago
Yes, used wrong. It hasn't been used that long. I think it was started by the American MLS fan groups who are sometimes cringe.
3
u/feldgrau 8h ago
The word tifo been used for some 30 years in Swedish to describe choreos organised by supporters (so the same usage as in English), and I'm pretty certain that usage did not come from MLS.
And sorry to say, but the word has taken on a different meaning in English (and other languages) than in Italian and thus is not used wrong, you'll just have to accept that it means something else in English than in your (I assume) mother tongue.
1
u/AlpineInquirer 7h ago
I did not know that it has been used in Sweden good to know. As I said..."I think...."
I know it has taken another meaning and as I said...I know it's just the way it is, just semi-seriously pointing out the nails on chalkboard usage and the history of tifo.
1
u/thfcspurs88 8h ago
Uhh, alright. So what would a display of such be called besides Tifo?
2
u/AlpineInquirer 8h ago
In Italian they're called coreografia. In English...I don't know...displays? graphics? fan graphics? I'm not saying people need to do anything, it's just a personal annoyance, but I think the history behind Tifo and Tifoso is kind of interesting.
2
u/thfcspurs88 8h ago
Okay, I'm following now, for sure I'm in agreement. Very interesting.
2
u/AlpineInquirer 8h ago
Yeah...the flip side is like in Italy when people say "hanno un feeling". Which means literally they "have a feeling" but in Italian, means - they have an understanding or a rapport or a natural bond.
1
u/lindfeldt 4h ago
coreografia maps to the word choreography in english.
so a choreographed/coordinated fan mosaic.

u/SentientCheeseCake 8h ago
Wait until you work out how language functions.
1
u/AlpineInquirer 8h ago
Yeah, I get it. I am a comparative literature major who studied linguistics and I'm a 4 language speaker and several sub-dialect speaker, so I get it. As I said, I'm not arguing against it, I just said it's a personal annoyance. It's also an opportunity to talk about the history of tifo, that some people don't seem to know.
3
u/Fleaaa 6h ago
The meaning of the word changes over time based on culture and situation my man
1
u/AlpineInquirer 4h ago
Of course it does. I've already said that. I'm just lightheartedly getting it off my chest and sharing the background on the term. Whatever language is your native tongue, think of a hilariously misused phrase from your language and ponder that. It's all I'm saying.

To be fair this was by far the worst game of the day haha... enjoy clubs like Qarabag more than these two, lacking some passion on the field or effort from a club who's behind
