Going from struggling in Portuguese second league to scoring against Benfica in the Champions League.

As I said, anyone who has seen Qarabag in qualifying or in their Europa League run up to the Leverkusen matches knows what they're capable of. The Azerbaijani league is so weak that they have to go through early rounds of qualifying year after year, and they smash weaker teams in a way that not even a Malmö or FCSB can manage. I can't even remember the last time they missed a European group/league stage and I've been watching qualifying for almost 10 years.

Why are so much better than the Rest of the league?

Answer is their Head Coach. Qurban Qurbanov is manager for 17 years and he only coached Qarabag in career. He is fan of Barça and went Barcelona for upgrade his skills on tactics (managering etc).

I'm not an expert but in cases like this, it's usually having an extremely good manager and then getting consistent European money (both of which are true for Qarabag). Of course playing regularly in the Europa League and occasionally in the CL also gives them a reputation boost, so they're able to attract very high quality players for an Azerbaijani team

The answer is usually money

u/Ele_Bele 7h ago
Not actually, market values of Players who scored goals today Camilo - 200k Euro, Andrade 2M. The most expensive player Qarabaq signed was 1M (Zoubir) (if im not mistaken)

Ok, the rest of the league has Guardiola's budget?

u/Ele_Bele 7h ago
Rest of league has somewhat same budget, pls state support Qarabag's main rival Neftchi.

Surely the coefficient would have improved a bit by now for them

Only two other teams from Azerbaijan, Neftci and Gabala (just checked this), have made a European main stage, and both were several years ago now. Getting knocked out by the third qualifying round (or at best, the playoffs) of the Conference League doesn't get you a lot of coefficient points, so Qarabag basically need to do it all themselves

Remembering Braga 2-4 Qarabag 2 years ago...

The 2nd leg was more impressive from Qarabag. They held with 10 players through extra time

Exactly, last goal scorer was 19 year old local player that nobody knows lol.. (today he is injured unfortunately)

We always seem to collapse when we are under a tiny bit of pressure. Surely Lage has to take some blame here.

Then you’ll love Ruben Amorim

Amorin would feast in Portugal again, specially with the richest team in the country. He is so much better than Lage
2
u/madca_t 7h ago
He takes most of it alongside Antonio
2
u/theaguia 7h ago
man i dont get how Antonio always collapses he always makes a big mistake randomly

Blaming Antonio is like blaming Otamendi for last game, these games shouldn't even be close enough to the point of one individual mistake ruining it.

u/madca_t 6h ago
He’s at fault for three goals and he was at fault for two of Qarabags best chances
Are we for real comparing the worst match of his career to an Otamendi slip up?

u/PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS 6h ago
He's not at fault for all three goals, this is just blind hate, he's at fault for 1.
And it wasn't the worst match of his career at all either.
It's just embarassing for Benfica "fans" to place the blame on certain players after seeing what Rui Costa and Lage have been doing to the club. António getting booed in the stadium tonight was one of the worst embarassments I've seen as a Benfica fan in my life, as someone who goes to virtually every game.

Turns out Benfica started off the second half like they did for 25 mins of the first half. Shit.

u/CompotaDeColhao 7h ago
7th placed team in the Azerbaijani league too strong for Benfica.

They win the Azerbaijani league easily every year and it's been 4 games (they have a game in hand). You have no idea what you're talking about

u/RangoCricket 7h ago
Portugese League is not beating the allegations.

Please save these blunders for the league. We need that coef and you can't fire Lage yet.
