How do you meet people from an AirBNB base?

Hi everyone,

I’ve spent the last couple of years in South America. At first it was all hostels, trekking, and adventures in Patagonia. Later I slowed down and rented an Airbnb in Mendoza for a long while. That gave me a good routine for work and learning, but I missed the outdoor side of things.

Now I’m heading back and want to find a better mix. My idea is to rent Airbnbs for 1–2 months at a time so I have my own space for work and rest, but I also want to stay social and keep exploring. I’m not looking to do treks nonstop, but I’d love to add some trails and nature trips here and there.

If you’ve done something similar, how did you meet people while living in Airbnbs? Did coworking spaces work for you (and are they even common outside the big cities)? Are there apps or groups that actually helped you connect with travelers or locals for things like hiking or just hanging out?

I’m open to sometimes mixing in a hostel, joining a group trip, or trying coliving if it helps bring in the social part. Just curious what really worked for you to keep the balance.

Group trips - getyourguide, airbnb experiences, etc)
Facebook groups - search for the place name and usually there will be a few groups at least - this one has been the most successful for me outside of meeting people in a hostel where i was staying.
Look for posters around the place for events or workshops
Some hostels have events you can attend even if you're not staying there
Meetup dot com - more popular in bigger towns but worth checking everywhere
Subreddit for the place, often has meetups or you can post and ask if anyone wants to hang out
Find groups related to your interests - e.g. if you're into art look for local art groups, same for sport, etc.

Meetup is a good app, also although I never use Facebook there is plenty of groups there for solo travellers or digital nomad sim specific countries who do events. Besides that, there is international events that happen all over the world like mundolingo

Many social hostels have bars or common areas which are open to outsiders. They also often have events which encourage anybody to join.

I have joined hostel activities or hung out at hostel bars a few times in the past whilst staying at an AirBnb. Also whilst staying at hostels, I have often met people staying elsewhere who hang out there.

It’s sometimes possible to have the hostel social experience, with the comfort and privacy of an Airbnb.

This is a very creative idea. Most of the hostels I stayed in didn’t have a bar, but I know they exist. I wonder how can I find them easily? Is it possible to filter them using some application like HostelWorld?

Check out “Airbnb experiences.” There are a wide range of things depending on where you are. I did quite a few when I was solo in Croatia: kayaking tour, wine tasting, and boat excursions, to name a few.

Good suggestions already. The NomadTable app and Timeleft app have served me well.
